- If you want to jump into the possibly greatest format in Magic The Gathering right now, this could be your entry! Budget Black! This build IS INDEED effective in the format and it includes NONE of the super high dollar cards. The basic deck below and in the video is just the starting point, adjustments should be made to the main deck and sideboard based on the Metagame in your local area.

Being a smartass: Order of the Ebon Hand CAN'T kill a Serra Angel. The Angel can't block the Hand, because of colour protection, the Hand can't block the Angel, because of flying.
This is a really fantastic intro to the format! I started as a kid in 97 and really just got the chaff no-one wanted from friends since MTG wasn't big where I grew up in Australia. This is achievable and I am so excited to put this together - thanks!
Ahh... the memories. :>)
Boston, Mirage Prerelease, September 1996. I sold a guy a Beta Demonic Tutor, in kinda rough shape, but not too bad. He shows me his deck. An all black-bordered black and artifact deck, with cards that, though in clear sleeves, all looked worn and scuffed like some evil book you'd find in a torture chamber. Intentionally. He took the Demonic Tutor I sold him, slid it into a sleeve, and placed it on the top of the face up deck, the top card being "Lich".
He then fans out the deck:
Black Lotus
Mox Jet
Cyclopean Tomb
Chains of Mephistopheles
The Abyss
Nethervoid
Lord of the Pit
Demonic Hordes
Dark Ritual X4
Hypnotic Specter X4
On and on, you get the picture. Hands down the BADDEST deck I've ever seen or will see.
Even though I'm not really a religious person, it still made the hairs on my arms stand up.
I'm guessing you didn't have a friend that traded 5$ worth of cards for your Contract from Below, but only if you signed it...
limit 1/person. he had a binder just for those
very funny guy
Lord of the pit is my favorite card
Those very often forgotten about Stone-Throwing Devils, I’m happy you remember them too! Thanks once again Mr. Edwin the Magic Engineer!
Hey Edwin! Very Interesting content. Only started playing in 2015, but the OS-Magic caught my attention. I have one remark. I now have to look up almost every card. Through Some easy and efficient editing you can have the card pop up, for us all to see and enjoy. I probably speak on behalf of the newer players. Anyhoohow, keep up the good work!
Great commentary! Love this channel. Takes me back to when I used to play MTG back in the 90s. I’m thinking of starting up again and I don’t want to spend a fortune. Subscribing now.
Great channel! Reminders of an era long gone.. I'm on a revival project and the first deck I've rebuilt is Necropotence. Just the old school weenie + hand/landD version without all the combo shenanigans.
My current go-to Old School deck is mono black. I chose to go mono black when I got back into Magic because that's what my first deck was back in 1994. Another excellent video!
baker3254 Ha!! That’s pretty much what I was going to comment. Back in 94-95 my revised/fourth goto deck was mono black. The only thing this deck is missing from mine was 4xNightmare instead of stone-throwing devils. I couldn’t find Arabian nights back then!
This is perfect. I’m making a battle box for these. Thank you
Great vid, I'm new to exploring eternal formats and this really helped thanks!
Hi there, thanks for leaving a comment and I'm glad this video helped. Definitely give Old School a shot, I think you'll be VERY impressed with how balanced/playable it is.
I know this an old video but thanks for uploading it. I had a good idea of what I wanted in my OS deck but this helped finish it.
This video actually helped me out with a deck building problem I have been having. I've been working on a black and red discard deck, but it has been failing every time I use it. The deck was so focused on trying rid the opponent of cards, that it frequently struggled with actually having a win condition. This video helped me realize that the strategy shouldn't be about discarding specifically, the discarding is merely a form of disruption for the purpose of promoting your own board state. The aggressive creatures in your discard deck helped me realize this. The creatures carry the deck, the discarding is just for protecting yourself while you play aggressively to kill your opponent.
Thanks for the helpful video, I will definitely try to rebuild my discard deck soon!
Wow, great feedback! I'm very happy to hear this video was helpful in that way.
Yes you are SPOT ON that the best disruption decks need to be doing more than just disrupting. I often find myself coming back to the word tempo. With Discard and Control decks that are really in the zone... doing their thing... the opponent either gets totally shut out or always feels like they can ALMOST do what they want to do.
The tempo part comes in because you push the opponent into a position they don't want to be in, then abuse that position. Your fast creatures forces them to play the small cheap stuff. Well that leaves the big cards sitting in their hand which get discarded away.
That's really what is so good about the Hypnotic Specter. Me must be dealt with on the board using cheap early spells, but as he swings he's often knocking out those turn 4+ big cards right out of your opponents hand. Sure after a few swings they are still at 14 life... but now they hand is empty and you are still swinging and probably dropping others.
Thanks for replying with some insightful advice for my deck building.
I'm also curious about your opinion on a couple of cards. They are not very old cards like the ones you are running for this deck. However I just want to hear what you think of their function in discard focused decks.
Lilliana's Caress - Enchantment - 1B
Whenever an opponent discards a card, that player loses 2 life.
Ravenous Rats - Creature Rat - 1B
When Ravenous Rats enters that battlefield, target opponent discards a card.
Would you ever play with these in an aggressive discard deck?
I sort of learned by playing, that Lilliana's Caress is actually better in decks that force card draws (Howling Mine) rather than decks that force discarding.
As for Ravenous Rats, I can never really get a solid understanding of whether this creature is good or not. It just never feels quite worth the play even if I can drop it on turn 2.
Oh my god this Deck is so cool. This was more or less my starting point in Magic.
I started mono black. But mine was a bit more about the big ones like Lord of the Pit and Nightmare
and of course the Djinns. And I think I had 2 Icy Manipulators for the Royal Assassin Combo.
And as you mentioned in the end I picked up a second color, too.
But for me it was red, I loved the Lightning Bolts I think this is why.
And this black/red after all developed to my "The Deck" like I told you. :)
Oh man ... your videos are time traveling for me!
Or to say it in a more MAgic related way .. Time Walk backwards. :D
For sure bigger Black Creature beef is a good way to go. But it's surprising that a deck like this one can actually tear it down, because this one gets the creatures out really quick and then dumps those bigger cards like Nightmare and Lord of the Pit out of your hand via Discard before they are cast.
Icy/Assassin is of course a great combo. It's a bit more late game and more of a control play, but very effective. This deck is meant to hit hard and dump mid/late game threats before they are played.
I'm very glad you are liking the videos. Yeah getting back into these kinds of decks is a real "Time Walk" to me as well!
Another excellent video for this series.
JaxTwins thanks :)
Finally pulled the cards for this together and can't wait to play my brother and his friends with it! Now Im working the mono green so I have two options.
Awesome! Please let me know your thoughts after like game 15 against a variety of decks. Remember that not everything is put there for one given match up. Some cards that are weak on one match up... hand you the game in another.
@@EdwintheMagicEngineer q
I'm throwing this together to play with some friends that just started in the format. Looks like fun! Thanks for the deck tech, Edwin!
Very cool Shaggy, please let me know how it goes.
Edwin the Magic Engineer will do, Edwin! Are there any suggestions you have for upgrades since you put the video out besides Juzams, Nether Void & The Abyss?
P.S. I had no idea Stone-throwing Devils were like $10 a piece lol
Splashing red for Badlands, bolts, wheel, REB, shatter, etc is pretty strong.
Or splashing white with Scrublands so you can go with Disenchant, Balance, Armageddon, Plow, etc.
Edwin the Magic Engineer that's what I was thinking too. I needed to pick up some more Scrublands and Badlands anyways.
I had to ask but can you use the newer cards of the same printing or only old school because this videos have helped me start to build a budget vintage deck 😁
Hi Edwin !! Thank you for the videos, the all 5 decks are really great starting points!! I built 5 OS mono colors decks and your videos were real gold to me in the process. I didn't include fallen empire yet (and the 4 strip mines!) and a friend of mine was really bummed not to see the tourachs in.. I'm pretty sure Tourachs x4 would unbalance the 5 decks in that "budget" environment ... putting Black on top of it all .. Any thoughts on the matter? Keep doing the good job man
Inhad this deck before during the mirage release. I had lake of the dead and helped me with pumping the drainlife
Nice deck tech! Only changes I would make is to put the royal assassins in the sideboard and play the full set of sinkholes. I would also play some copies of paralyze... maybe take out a disk, a drain life and terror.
i love how time decided to make this budget deck into a really, really expensive deck
Keep up the great work, Edwin! :)
Very kind of you to say Timothy. I will :)
I like Racks, with a little white for Balance
and CoP Red in the board
Nice Deck! Do you have any Idea to replace Stone throwing devil? I have Will o wist to remplace IT? What Do you Think? Thanks for all your video
Very powerful deck I would definately play this deck if I was playing Magic The Gathering and this would be one of my best decks. I would definately play max Black Knights too as they are broken and also max Sorceress Queen that you didn't include somehow. Royal Assasin and Sorceress Queen pretty much mean that the opponent can't attack you until he get rids of them so they are Giga Broken.
Omg amazing deck!
Thanks!
Love the BB blackknight.
Oh my gosh, me too! The Beta Black Knights, Hippies, and Sengir's are just SO COOL!
So what cards can be used in the old school format? I was looking into playing old school and wanted to know?
Great Video, mono black was my starting point when I started playing in 1994/95 and will be my starting point into old school. I have 3 Underground Sea and 2 Bayou. Is it worth it to add a second colour without having the power 9? Which blue and/or green cards would you add?
ZaRrK me personally... I would splash Badlands for red bolts/chians. Or Scrubland for white Disenchant/Plow/Geddon/Balance.
Bayou for green could give Regrowth and Sylvan Library.
Underground Sea for Blue for Power Sink or Energy Flux.
But with all those I would play 4 duals and 2 City of Brass for 6 total access to those colors or I would leave them out. With just 2 to 3 of each you'll often get color hosed.
I’m starting to really like Haunting Wind in the sideboard
Nice video
I have 4 strip mines from Anthologies, can i use them or it needs to be 93/94?
Man, you should upload these to Tapped Out! That way we can see prices and it'd be easy to check out all the cards. Cool deck! I've been thinking about building a vintage/legacy deck sometime.
I didn't even know about Tapped out, pretty cool. I didn't see any Old School content on there. Do they support that format?
Nope they don't, but you can just upload the deck in vintage format and add "old school" in the deck name :)
Nug Humper the better choice would be mtggoldfish as it gives accurate prices for mtgo and paper.
Spectre rocks 🤘🏻
not sure if you even check these comments but ill give it a shot. first off, i like your videos. you seem like a genuine good guy, not a magic elitist. i like your views on proxies and i totally agree. im new to this format and absolutly love it. i started playing when revised came out, regrettably i sold my collection as a teen. im building back up again though and better than ever. one question, is stone throwing devils banned from the format? i ask because im looking to buy a playset but i do not want to waste the cash if i cant even use them. thank you and keep up the awesome channel.
Hi NeOn Sunlite, thanks for the comment and for watching my videos. I'm definitely NOT an elitist because I'm doing everything I can to put out good budget and mid-budget decks as well as convince the community to be more accepting of proxies. I want to bring people in and I want to give people a competitive shot at events.
Proxies are really not needed for new formats like Modern, Extended, Standard, etc. But for old, eternal and VERY expensive formats (Vintage, Legacy and Old School) they really should be accepted.
About the Stone Throwing Devils... some groups ask you not to play them, some are fine with it. It's a mixed bag unfortunately :(
@@EdwintheMagicEngineer Thank You for the reply. Thats kind of what i figured about the stone throwing devils, i really ..dont want to offend anyone by using them. i love the decks you have created, i built the black one and it is an amazing deck that does really well. im slowly building up my collection of old school cards and i like this format better than modern to be honest. it was your videos of the budget deck techs that got me into this format to begin with so thank you. And yes, i know you are definitley not an elitist lol you are a good man and share a genuine love this game just as i do. keep up the good work and thank you.
I actually built a very similar deck looking through commons like 5 years ago, it was super cheap. I had to answer my friends control and burn decks, and they fucking hate my deck, even though they're technically better.
T1 Swamp Rit Specter is my all time favorite play haha. Even if I lose I'm happy.
EDIT: I love Hymn. Glad you mentioned it.
this was one of my player crushing decks
well... some of the cards in there,
Awesome! I noticed you said "was". You don't play it anymore?
It was my 3rd deck when I started playing mtg, but I stopped using it since it was out of the latest 6 expansions which was years ago, I still keep it though whenever friends come over. I still treasure it, the hypnotic specter was the highlight - I could discard opponents card = people got triggered :p
So the answer is not often
P.S. I play commander instead of standard now
I sub'd for more old school deck tech's
Hey Edwin, have you considered underworld dreams main deck?
Underworld Dreams had been restricted from August 1994 to October 1999.
ehm can u use hymm and oder in old school sins when ?
I would take out the 2 sink holes and add +2 Mishra's Factory. They just combo really well with Nevs disk.
I would say try it and report back.
I have a black deck that I have been playing for quite a while. I have changed it up quite a few times. It is somewhat similar to this. I also run Maze of Ith in mine.
The Mishra's just combos really well with Nev's disk. When the board is cleared it is always nice having a Mishra to use after the disk. I run 15 swamps and an Urborg with a CE Jet, but I know that this is a budget deck. It's nice having the little bit of extra mana because a lot of the deck that I use runs off of 2 swamps. Most people use 4 strips mines so having the extra mana works well.
Now that the devils are banned what would you replace them with?
Stone throwing devils
So the format allow 95 (4th edition) copy of that card? (I can use 1997 5th edition Black Knight?)
Yes, any card with the original art, non-foil, and the original border (not the new rounded rectangle text frames etc.)
Old school is a lot more flexible on the rules, especially if you are just playing amongst friends and casual settings.
missing the Stone Throwing Devils and the 2 sinkhole to give it a try! sadly i cant find a lot of people to play in my country, we are about 2/3 persons sadly.
Join the FB group and play over Skype! You'll love it, I promise.
facebook.com/groups/551913338322720/
im there already, got give it a try sometime next week :) got to finish my deck first
Cool, just proxy it up! Almost nobody will mind as most people on there just want to play :)
What are your suggestions on younger people wanting to play old school mtg?
Start with decks like the budget ones I'm showing in my videos! I have only showed a Red, and a Black build so far. The others ARE coming. You can get cheap versions of these decks using Revised cards and other same-art non-foil printings. That will allow you to start playing and actually be competitive. While you play, you will see and learn the other decks and get a feel for the format. You can then decide if you want to invest more $$ and buy more Old School cards and you'll have some idea what deck archtype looks the most fun to you. So your money will be well spent.
Edwin the Magic Engineer budget monogreen machines can be really brutal. Titanias song also doubles as mox hate.
MagicalMinister Yep! After this comment was made I posted a mono-green, and then mono-blue. Only white is left now.
find someone you can borrow cards from
magic is a social game, make friends
anyone who plays this already has a massive collection they can't use all at once
I know I'm mad late and I haven't kept up too much with MTG, but why Sengir over Nightmare? Is it a cost decision?
If i watched the rest of the vid, i'd have my answer. Thanks
For the most part yeah, the mana cost. This deck is trying to pressure hard on early game. You can ritual out a sengir on turn 3 and not only does it take more turns for nightmare... rituals make him weak because you don't have the swamps to make him strong
i have a white boarder black deck its tuned.. just no players to play against.
substitute for Stone Throwing Devils? since most online stores are not selling them anymore
Erg Raiders and 2 more swamps
@@EdwintheMagicEngineer thanks much
How come you run 2 Urbors? It's a legendary, should be restricted to 1?
Underworld dreams is restricted in 1993/1994?
Is this deck missing a card? I keep coming up with 59 mainboard and 15 sideboard
Eric Stewart whoops, yes! Add one more swamp for a total of 14
i wwould add another big baddie like ihsan's shade
Homelands is not an allowed set in Old School magic
You should update your build with the current tech- initiates of the ebon hand and 4x strip, 4x Mishra.
I specifically avoided that because there are too many cards in this deck that need at least 2x black if not more.
Edwin the Magic Engineer that's why initiates of the ebon hand are there.
I get that but feels like a band aid fix using weaker cards.
What can i substitute for stone throwing devils?
And urborg
Erg Raiders and 2 more swamps.
Not enough creatures to justify 3x Bad Moon. There is a really big need in old school Mono-Black decks for Underworld Dreams so you can consistently deal damage. I'd drop the Bad Moons and a Royal Assassin for a playset of Underworld Dream in your Main Board.
I am considering 4x underworld dreams for the constant ping damage. What are your thoughts on howling mine too?
Now that stone throwing devils is banned what do you recommend
Stone-throwing devils are not banned in old school (at least not under EC rules). Although they will be more expensive now, since all the banned cards have shot up in value.
Devils are exiled from history in DCI sanctioned events because blue hairs activists cannot tell the difference between them and Black people. For everyone else, little devils are a welcome under-costed weenie with a relevant ability.
are all these cards legal in modern ?
Even if they are, that's definitely not the idea or purpose of the deck.
This deck is made for a format called "Old School", also called 9394 because only cards originally printed in 1993 or 1994 (or same border, same artwork reprints later) is allowed.
That's DEFINITELY a different format then Modern, Legacy, Vintage, Standard, Extended, etc.
How can I replace stone throwing devils ?
Probably 2 more Order of the Ebon Hand, 1 more Sengir, 1 more Black Knight.
That’s what I was thinking thx Edwin and why’s there no rack ?
Btw I’m uk so is 4 strip mine legal fir Friday night magic
@@fpljosh9661 because they don't work well with Disk, the game plan is to swarm with creatures, disrupt hand via spells mostly, and reset the board with disk if it gets crazy.
I really think the 8 unterrorable, unplowable knights and 4 unterrorable, unboltable juzams are a better creature base for the berserk plan from another video. Unholy strength is not THAT much worse than Giant Growth / unstable mutation imo, and blanking removal in a deck with creature enchantments and pump cards is a huge deal. The card I'm afraid of ruining my attacks is Mishra's Factory, so I think I would ditch the discard plan and go for a Black Vise / Sinkhole / Ice Storm package. I like black vise because black has nothing impressive to do on turn 1
The point of that build was to be good and budget, Juzam is certainly not budget, neither are Bayou or Berserks.
Having said that, yeah Black Green can be a great mix. Also because green can provide the artifact and enchantment destruction that black is lacking.
@@EdwintheMagicEngineer Thanks for replying & agreed! Just sharing my idea btw, that's what I'm thinking I'll go for when I find some time to try out old school. I dig your content, please keep it up!
Yeah cause ritual, any mox and Juzam isn't good. Or double ritual or land and lotus or mana crypt or mana vault and land. Or easily 1st turn Hypnotic Specter and 2nd turn Hymn to Tourach. Or 1st turn Hymn and 2nd turn duress black vise. Mix in sinkholes and strip mine and wasteland and it's fast with the control. Also 1st turn Necropotance is game over for most decks 99 percent of the time. Mono Black is so slow just like u mentioned LOL 😂🤣🥴🤯🐌.
Ever since the ban, Stone Throwing Devils have unfortunately skyrocketted in price.
What is this all about?
In the game called Magic the Gathering (MtG) there is a format called "Old School" where only cards printed in 1993-1994 are allowed. Although it's a fantastic form of MtG it tends to be very expensive. So I wanted to make a series of videos that prove players can build competitive decks in the Old School format without spending a ton of money.
On 2020 this is not a budget deck anymore if you choose to have all those Beta cards ;)
I’m only counting 59 cards main deck is that right?
Whoops, the written out list was missing a terror. There are 3 in the video.
Thanks!!
Edwin the Magic Engineer thanks!
Edwin the Magic Engineer I was copying the deck list into decked builder while watching and totally missed it!
Do you know when a card is powerful....when a group creates a format that excludes it....and the main reason for that format....Force of Will, I just wish the format wasn't figured out in a week....its a good Hog Pool.
Hi Johnathon,
I really don't believe Old School was "figured out in a week." It was being developed and played in Sweden for years before it became popular elsewhere.
And I don't believe Ice Age, Alliances, Homelands and later were excluded "because of Force of Will." No no. Old School was simply an attempt to have a format that was centered around the very first sets of Magic that were really meant all to be played together.
Remember that Ice Age specifically was meant as a "stand alone set" and really was NOT designed to be played with everything going back to Alpha. So it's very valid to not include Ice Age and everything past it in Old School... which includes Alliances. I hope that makes sense... I do believe that's why there is no Force of Will in Old School.
Nice response, I think you missed my point but I do appreciate you taking the time to shed some praise on the old school format....but I'll stand firm...the format was unlocked in less then a week....every archetype that can win a 60% RATIO has already been known....since that week (ok I believe 1-3 weeks). Now the format was talked about with regards to reaching alliances.....but that was shut down by 1 card, Force of Will....again its a nice Hog Pool
Oh well that's very different than your first statement. Ok, the 1996 format is what you were talking about. You needed to have said that I think :)
Sure Force of Will was a factor there, but I will... like you... stand my ground that it's more about sets that were really not designed to be played together was a much bigger factor.
can't argue with the Hog Pool
And strip mine limited to 1
No, that's in the Atlantic or Swedish format. Eternal Central allows 4 strips.
So fnm
Legal ?
And is it ok to ditch demonic tutor for a grim or sommet fir cheaper option
I wanted to know if u could do a vid for mono black but so replace demonic for diabolic or grim tutor fir budget cause not everyone wants to pay 50 pound fir demonic
No Edwin I wasn't talking about the 96 format, again you missed my point about a format even being discussed or created...a format that didn't have FORCE OF WILL to appease crazy power loving mages etc...but I'm going to let this one rest bud....let a guy sit a play out.
Well I'm sorry to have missed your point. Best wishes.
The deck shouldn't have Bad Moon. Unholy Strength is better.
Too bad this isn’t budget today haha
This is certainly not a budget deck.
Remember that you can use 4th and 5th Edition, plus Italian Legends to buy copies of these cards. And they are MUCH less expensive. I'm using Beta/Legends etc here because I own those copies.
Also, you must keep in mind the format we are talking about here... Old School has decks that clear 15k even with the cheapest cards, 200k with the most expensive cards. A deck that can be had for $150 is INDEED budget compared to those.
Finally, this is a non-WoTC controlled eternal format where new printings cannot ruin value and people are joining it every day. So very likely all the money you put into cards will be stable or go UP.
Its budget compared to most old school decks which are running dual lands and power 9 cards etc etc
too expensive for me... so.. i was wandering? can you play with fake cards instead.. because fuck real cards?
heck yes you can! I have a whole video about making proxies, it's perhaps my most popular video.
Note that a proxy is not the same as a counterfeit card. Proxies are an honest stand in, declared without deception and used at the approval of all players. Counterfeit cards are a lie, pretending to be real through deception. Proxies are moral, counterfeit is not.
@@EdwintheMagicEngineer okay D
