  • NOTE: My apologies to everybody, I forgot that Maze of Ith is restricted to 1 in Eternal Central Old School Rules. So that one card in the Sideboard would need to rotate with something else.

      Thanks man. If I was retired I could pump them out pretty fast. They unfortunately take a lot of work before making the video which is what slows them down. It takes time to build a deck, play test it, refine it, test more, refine it. etc.

    Hypnotic Specter along with disc is great also from one more side - If you swing with it and your opponent has no way to stop it, they will want to empty their hand quick to not lose card but if you have disc in play it can very often be the same for them because you can blow up their cards from the field.

    I have all the pieces for the deck, except for the Badlands. I even have a Chaos Orb, which I paid a mere $60 for 7 years ago. Incredible how these old cards have spiked.

    One thing though:
    -If this Deck is supposed to be EC legal, you can only pack one
    maze of ith.
    They are restricted under EC rules.

    Great vid! This build is very popular in my playgroup at the moment and I totally had to learn how to deal best with disks blowing up left, right and center!
    I understand that you're not choosing for the Rukh Egg, because you're right, it's not as effective as a hippie. On the other hand, don't we play the format to enjoy these old cards. I think more people should make the Rukh Egg choice in general when building OS decks. I know, you're not going to win all the time, but casting an Egg and use it in combo with the disk.. WOW! That is infinite respect..

    • @EdwintheMagicEngineer
      @EdwintheMagicEngineer  Před 5 lety +1

      You have missed the point of my video series. The point was not to create nostalgic decks meant purely for fun and nothing else. The point of the budget deck series quite specifically is to demonstrate that competitive decks can be made on a budget. I'm disproving the incorrect assumption that unless you have big cards... you lose.
      The entire point of these videos is to make the most competitive decks I can on a budget but within theme's/colors. Shifting gears and just going for fun is an entirely different goal. I AGREE it's valid and I do play cards for fun as well... But that's a different video series.
      Also realize that what is "fun" is completely subjective to the person playing the deck. You might love Rukh Eggs but others might hate them and gather no fun from them. I cannot make videos nearly as well about what's fun for everybody... because everybody has a different notion of fun.
      I hope that makes sense :)

    • @TimmytheSorcerer
      @TimmytheSorcerer Před 5 lety

      @@EdwintheMagicEngineer No worries and I totally agree that you can play competitive without p9. However, I enjoy both. For me playing a nostalgic deck and win is the true challenge. Anyway, appreciate your deck tech and love the OS spirit. Keep it up!

    • @EdwintheMagicEngineer
      @EdwintheMagicEngineer  Před 5 lety +1

      Thanks Timmy.
      Again to be clear... I feel the same way about playing Old School and doing games for fun. Many of my decks have sub-optimal card choices just because I love those cards so much and they are fun. I have fully powered decks and budget decks.
      This video series was made to prove a point, that's all. The point of this series would be severely diminished if I made sub optimal card choices for any reason other then budget. People would watch a budget deck get beat and say "SEE SEE!! You lost because you didn't play The Deck or have full P9 etc!"

    Cool vid like your take on it. I build a troll disco with a friend and we put hypnotic in there after a lot of play test and it improve the power of the deck drastically. I disagree about the fact that the hypnotic dosen't fit with the disk concept. the idea is not that he will survive the disk but he force the opponent to commit to the board and not keep is card in is hand. Without the hyppie once your opponent is aware of the fact that you play disc and he will keep all is disenchant for the it. Also we put 2 will-o-the wisp in there and they work great!

    Hey Edwin, I really enjoyed this deck tech.
    I'm playing something similar, but I struggle with sideboarding. With the above deck/sb, what would you cut if going against the Deck? Do you cut the bolts for REBs? Reduce the creatures against the Abyss? I always find it difficult to find the right balance, keeping enough aggro while trying to include more control elements.

    I've been thinking about making a Disco Troll deck. This gives me a good head start. Plus, 4 Stone Rain, 4 Sinkhole, and 4 Strip Mine? This is a deck after my own heart. I could see myself trying to fit in 4 blight as well, but I'm also a degenerate when it comes to land destruction... Looking forward to seeing it in action on video..... Thanks!

    • @EdwintheMagicEngineer
      @EdwintheMagicEngineer  Před 5 lety

      4 Blight would certainly up the land destruction. There's a fine balance there though... you can't just blow up mana = win. You need to deny mana effectively enough that they cannot answer YOUR threats.
      That game plan fails when all you have is mana denial and no threats. So there ends up being the *right* amount of mana denial such that enough card slots are devoted to your own threats.
      Does that make sense?

    • @Lyrici17
      @Lyrici17 Před 5 lety

    Do you think Dark Ritual is dispendable in Old school? I can see some play on this deck...

    • @EdwintheMagicEngineer
      @EdwintheMagicEngineer  Před 5 lety

      The Dark Ritual is for sure a great card and fits perfectly in many decks. For this deck, the innate card disadvantage might be more negative then the speed is positive.
      Remember that Dark Ritual is play trading card advantage for speed. Well packing strip mines and sinkhole means the land destruction game plan starts pretty darn fast.
      The ABSOLUTE DEATH of a Land Destruction deck comes when your opponent either bleeds you out of cards in hand, or if they can out-speed your destruction and play threats you cannot answer before they kill you.
      Dark Ritual helps a lot with speed, but after many games with a deck like this I have found that an empty hand will kill me more often then losing the mana race.
