Old School 93/94 Deck Tech (Budget Green)

  • Here is the latest in my series of Budget Old School decks for the 1993 to 1994 format. This deck went a little higher on cost so it could include 4 copies of Berserk, but with reprints those are much lower in price these days and can be had for the same price of many Standard/Modern staples so I think the "Budget" term still applies.
    This deck is INDEED very good. I crushed quite a few other Old School decks with it because that creature beatdown is just so hard to stop. Berserk is a house that you can certainly build a deck upon, even without any power 9 or cards greater than $100 each.
    As always, this is just a starting point. Feel free to take this list and change it, use it as you see fit. My point in making this video is PROVING that Old School is a balanced format that does NOT require you to empty your bank account to play and be competitive.

    Good point on the tapping for mana when you block for the elves/birds. Another outside the box option is to Berserk your opponent's creatures to kill them at the end of turn!

    • @EdwintheMagicEngineer
      @EdwintheMagicEngineer  Před 6 lety +1

      Absolutely yes, I do that as well. Also, you can Berserk your own creatures on defense and they won't get destroyed at the end of the turn because they didn't attack.

    Thank you for another great video. It's very rare to see a Mono-Green Old School deck.

    • @EdwintheMagicEngineer
      @EdwintheMagicEngineer  Před 6 lety +1

      You are welcome! Yeah it's rare. I think the reason is not that it's not viable... It's that people either ASSUME it's not viable or they are so excited to play nostalgic decks they used to love so they run to The Deck, White Weenie, Mono Black, the Zoo, Erhnam-Ageddon, etc.
      But yes, Mono green and even BUDGET Mono Green is indeed very strong! 4 Berserks being allowed is just insane. It's a house you can build a deck upon.
      I really really wanted people out there to CLEARLY UNDERSTAND that you don't need Power 9, a full grip of Reserve list cards, or even Dual Lands to be competitive in Old School. People just assume they cannot compete if they don't have those... so hopefully my video series goes a long way to make it clear.

    I'm in Europe & we only use Swedish format here, what would you suggest I could change to do a European legal deck? Trying icy's instead of the additional LD at the moment for disruption.

    • @EdwintheMagicEngineer
      @EdwintheMagicEngineer  Před 6 lety

      Not sure what you mean by LD... but I assume you mean going down to 1x Strip MIne because of European (Swedish) rules... right?
      That being the case, I would try out some Winter Orbs! With the Llanowar Elves and Birds of Paradise this deck gets around not having many land drops pretty well. Winter Orb would likely slow down the opponent more than you.

    • @GamingBear_Q_E_D
      @GamingBear_Q_E_D Před 6 lety

      sorry I meant land destruction with the loss of the strip mines ... under Swedish rules.
      Testing different things against other old school decks I have put together to find which is likely to work better in the local environment.
      Hadn't tested orbs yet, currently working with icy's to slow the opponent & gauntlets of power against white weenie & the menace of their swords to threaten to switch the targeted artefact or creature for one of theirs & make them consider removing one of my creatures or using disenchant.
      Doing lots of testing of mono coloured decks, with one multi coloured deck using duolands so far ... will do a vid on the testing sometime soon,

    Had you considered elves of deep shadow as a two of instead of birds? They allow you to attack, even if they don't make green.

    4x city of brass from chronicles is still reasonably cheap

      Those would be a good play with black splash agreed. If/When I do a green black old school deck it will likely be considered mid-level expense due to the Bayous. • @joeb3874

    I'm a little confused with how a mishras work. Do you have to tap another land to make them a creature?

    • @EdwintheMagicEngineer
      @EdwintheMagicEngineer  Před 6 lety +1

      One mana from anywhere else can be used to make that Mishra's Factory into a 2/2 Artifact Creature in addition to being a land with 3 abilities.
      One of those 3 abilities is to pump an existing Assembly worker +1/+1. That can be done on itself (which taps it) or use a 2nd Mishra's Factory to pump the first one.
      One trick that people use while blocking is using 2 lands, one a Mishra's Factory, one is any other land. The 2nd land is used to generate mana and make an Assembly Worker. Then you declare your 2/2 Assmbly Worker as a blocker. After the attacker has declared any effects and passes priority to you... you tap your 2/2 Assembly Worker to pump itself into a 3/3. So with just 2 lands you can effectively get a 3/3 blocking creature.
      That is why Mishra's Factories are going up so much in value.

    • @joeb3874
      @joeb3874 Před 6 lety

      Edwin the Magic Engineer Ok thanks! So if it attacks after you tap a land to make it an assembly worker it is a 2/2. It can only become the 3/3 creature if it defends. Thanks again for clearing that up for me!

    I was under the impression that the Old School format stipulated that the cards used needed to be from a 93/94 printing. Therefore, no 4th or Chronicles editions (and do on) are permitted.
    My wallet is happy to see that is not the case.

    • @EdwintheMagicEngineer
      @EdwintheMagicEngineer  Před 6 lety +1

      Must be original art, Chronicles and 4th Edition are just fine :)
      www.channelfireball.com/old-school-9394-magic-rules/
      Reprinted Cards
      Some reprinted versions of cards from these sets are also allowed. In order for a reprint to be allowed, the following must be true:
      It must be a non-foil card
      It must use the original Magic card border
      It must have art that matches the art of any version printed in the above legal sets
      It must be a legal Magic card (no proxies, no Collector’s edition, etc.)
      Cards may be printed in any language so long as they obey the above rules. Final rulings on the legality of any cards in dispute will be made by the Head Judge of the event and ChannelFireball event staff.
      Exception: The Revised Edition printings of Serendib Efreet and Plateau are legal in Old School.
      ==============================================
      and Eternal Central
      www.eternalcentral.com/9394rules/
      Additional Sets and Cards Allowed (ie. REPRINTS)
      Tournaments hosted by Eternal Central also allow all non-foil cards from the sets above, that were reprinted IN ANY LANGUAGE with the original frame and original art. So for example, a Chronicles City of Brass, Fifth Edition Wrath of God, Time Spiral Psionic Blast, and Collector’s Edition Mox Ruby would all be legal (original frame + original art), while an Ice Age Swords to Plowshares or Arena 1996 Counterspell would not be legal (different art). The misprinted Revised Serendib Efreet (with Ifh-Biff Efreet’s art, and green border) is of course allowed, because it was printed in one of the original sets in 1994 (Revised). We always encourage you to seek out the oldest and coolest versions of cards you can find, but these can serve as your de facto substitutes for the cards printed in 93-94. Absolutely no proxies and fake cards allowed. Finally, the following promotional cards from 1994 are also legal: Arena, Sewers of Estark, and Nalathni Dragon.

    • @EdwintheMagicEngineer
      @EdwintheMagicEngineer  Před 6 lety +2

      MTG Phil Yeah not only is it straight up legal to play those versions based on the two most widely accepted rules sets (As I posted above) but I've found the same thing you have... people in the community just want to play and are very accepting.
      Personally I think the Swedish rules are very elitist and I'm not a fan of those at all. I love original cards as much as the next guy... but I don't wish to exclude people from playing and I want everybody to bring their A-game.

    • @GamingBear_Q_E_D
      @GamingBear_Q_E_D Před 6 lety

      From what I understand you are mostly right, unless the card art is the same as the original ... so a later reprint with the original card art will be ok in the format, but different art even on the same card will not.
