    The PDI they charge you/me includes checking and opening the dam thing.
    I bought my 1290S here in Canada. Paid 500 bucks for PDI and the right side was closed!
    Thanks to you, watching your content ran into this issue.
    Having not know about it, I would be stranded in middle of nowhere.

    I have a new 2023... both petcocks were off. I believe this means only the gas in the left side is used as the petcocks connect to each other to "balance the fuel tanks". The fuel level sensor appears to be on the right side... Seems to be a common issue on new bikes. I just happened to discover it because I removed the tank to run some lighting wires.

    • @RicardoYeep
      @RicardoYeep  Před rokem

      Hiya Russell.. Sorry to hear that. I agree seems a very common oversight during the PDI checks at dealers. It causes so much aggro if not found before breaking down. Glad you spotted it mate.

  • @TushalBhadang
    @TushalBhadang Před 3 lety +3

    Hi Ric! I had exactly the same petcock issue - engine died on the motorway while I was doing 100 kph! Luckily I was able to drag it to the nearest fuel station and fill 'er up. BUT the penny dropped about the petcock when only 12.X litres of fuel went in - which then got me to look at the petcock and I found that one was half open and the other was fully closed. The fuel level sensor is on the left side of the tank (when in the rider's seat). So the tank always showed full! This happened with my first proper ride after taking her home from the dealer - so before I could finish the first 300 kms. I did mention this issue to the dealer and identified it as a PDI oversight.
    Since this 'issue' the bike has spent 10 days at the dealer getting a faulty regulator-rectifier replaced - but she is back home and all is fine.

    • @RicardoYeep
      @RicardoYeep  Před 3 lety +2

      Hiya Tushal. Oh so not just me then. Yes Bruce on here and others said also the same. Poor PDI checks.... But I cannot prove it so no point in moaning to dealer now I guess. Sorry to hear about the Reg/rec!! Already??! thats so bloody annoying. Fingers crossed I have not had any genuine faults so far.. !! Glad you got the beast back though! I am still monitoring my fuel and guage for the time being until I get trust :)

    To adjust the petcocks it is not needed to remove plastic covers. I know the manual says so, but it is fairly easy to reach them underneath these covers and operate them. It saves some time which is beer drinkable ;)

    what a consequence, I got stuck on the highway, 210 kilometers away and alone on August 16th. I guess it was some sort of the same problem but a few times I did also got a red fuel pump warning on my dashboard and was able to run the bike a few more times. The fuel gauge exactly displayed the same amount of petrol as it looks in your video but I was able to run my bike a few more kilometers to ride out from the highway. Next day early in the morning I towed my bike on a truck to my dealer. They drained my tank for about 15 minutes and changed the fuel pump with a brand new one. then with a happy face on me just before start to ride home I startup the bike and see that there was a petrol leakage. Then my bike went back to the lift inside the dealer shop. I was told the new fuel pump has some problems so they mixed my old fuel pump parts with the brand new one and after almost 8 hours I got my bike back. I happily start it up and just in 2 minutes I got a red empty fuel tank warning on my dash while riding. So I turn back to my dealer asked if they put back the petrol that they have drained in the morning and they said yes all has been put back in my tank and told that warning may be seen because that they have drained all my fuel tank and asked me to drive to the nearest petrol station and fill it up to correct it. I was so surprised at the petrol station when the fuel pomp shows me that I got 21.26 liters of petrol in my tank. So I did ride back again and talk with my dealer that there could have been a confusion and they forgot or put back my petrol to another bike by mistaken. I am not sure what all happened exactly, whatewer but tomorrow morning I will check my gas tank taps and will never trust the fuel gauge again. Thank to share

      Hi Ali thanks for the helpful comment and informstion! Very interesting as seems to be a more common theme as I hear from different people. I never got the fuel pump warning though. Just died on me. WOW sounds like you have had a series of unfortunate events. That would really peeve me off big time. Sounds like your dealer need to pay more attention on service. They cannot have put your fuel back if you already low!. Thanks for sharing your experience. Much appreciated!

    I trust LC8 engines but I do not trust their fuel pump. Had issues this year with engine cutting out in the middle…luckily I bought an extra fuel pump for storage just in case. And sure enough my 2018 KTM Adventure R fuel pump died at 28,xxx KM after owning it for 4 years.
    Thought it was something electrical or battery and my bike will not start for a good 3 weeks diagnosing why it will not start and my last resort was to replace the fuel pump and it started right away. Have been using mostly non ethanol gas from Shell Supreme gas and bike never empty.

      Hello mate! Thanks for the insight and sharing your experience. Yes I’ve heard a lot about past reliability issues KTM fuel pumps have had. I’m hoping this nee model with I’m hoping more modern improved manufacturing processes 🤞 will be better. However here in uk there is no escaping ethanol in fuel. The bike states it’s compatible so let’s see if over long term it has any Impact.

    Hi Rick....
    Exactly the same thing has just happened to me.
    I was recovered from a dangerous position by the AA.
    Bike got dropped off at the dealer.
    They went straight to the tap and put the Tie rap underneath it. Think the big twin shakes the tap shut...
    Also have had issues with the transponder having to be replaced..luckily under warranty.
    It's a shame as the bike is awesome..when it's running..

    • @RicardoYeep
      @RicardoYeep  Před 10 měsíci

      Hiya Scott.. Sad but true mate.. It happens quite often. However it is due to the "dealer" not carrying out the PDI (pre delivery inspection) correctly and ensuring both taps are open. It is physically not possible for the bike to close them off on their own.. This goes agains gravity also haha.. To close them you need to screw them in (upwards). They come from the factory closed.. The tech who pdi your bike must have thought of only one to unscrew... This catches a lot of dealer technicians out. They need to unscrew one either side. I only added the tie wraps to ensure non of my mates take the piss and try and close them off when out riding together. And to ensure any tech working on my bike needs to put themn back if the remove them (as a reminder to bloody open both taps before ending the job). :)

    This problem comes up often on Facebook with this new Super Adventure 2021.
    It's at the dealership :/ they don't check the bike... so the problem come directly in factory ? Probably...
    An other problem is know : the system inside the tank does not rise as it becomes porous over time. (on the old version of SA) and doesn't indicate the correct fuel.
    Sorry for your mishaps, i love this bike (i have an SAS of 2019) 8 000km, no problem (i hope !)

      Yup, happened to me too on my 2014 KTM 1190. Some design flaws live forever! Had the bike in for the big valve adjustment service, and they forgot to open that valve. Bike suddenly died a few days later when I was close to home. I figured the dealer had broken something during the service and didn't even think about fuel since the gauge showed lots of fuel left. Called my son and we pushed the bike home a half mile! Then I thought it was strange the bike showed no errors but just wouldn't run so I checked the tank to see it was empty on one side. A few turns of the valve and she was running fine again.

      When you fill up the tank to full, there will be 1 bar showing empty, but in about 1-2 km of riding, that should be resolved and all bars should show full. That is normal for most bikes, takes about that much time for the sensor to detect the true fuel level. I have that behaviour on my current Triumph Street Triple and also seen that on a demo bike Tiger 900 GT, as well as my past bikes - though NEVER on any of the Japanese bikes I've owned.

    I have forgotten to open my stop cock after disconnecting the fuel line. It's a wired feeling running out of fuel but luckily with mine being the 2018 bike, I could see that's what I'd done without needing tools. They will run with both closed as what they do is allow fuel to balance. Well, that correct for the previous generations.

      Poor PDi i put this down to but cannot prove it. Anyway I know it will never happen again :) I am not sure about the older models as I am sure they didn't have bladder tanks (Split tanks). I thought the 2021 was the first for this on the 1290. You definitely wont get very far with both shut off lol..... As for the one being shut off like mine. The left one was a full tank and is the side that has the fuel sender on.. So the bike thought it always had full tank. By locking off the left the fuel would remain showing as full. But the right tank would eventually deplete causing the bike to break down.. (but still show a full tank of fuel or kind of..)
