Most of the super fast cars are fast because they optimize the energy output for the fuel, and so they don’t just need to put bigger heavier engines in to burn more fuel (which would be even less efficient). It’s not an easy way to tell the efficiency of a car based on how fast it accelerates and really not well on how loud it is. In this case the loudness from the turbos is actually a sign that it’s saving energy from the exhaust. Muscle cars stock were like the epidemy of regular combustion engines scaled up to max reasonable size without any optimization. They probably burn more fuel than anything

It’s called a compressor surge and a 2j isn’t the only turbo’d engine that can do produce it. Instead of running a BOV that vents to atmosphere you plug the adapter so the air cycles back to the turbo thus re-turning the compressor wheel giving the iconic choophh stututututu sound.
