- I've only had my 2021 KTM 1290 Super Adventure S for a fortnight but it's due its first service. Join me as I throw a few little mods on the bike to help turn it into an all-weather beast! I also have a bit of a waffle about why most bike CZcams videos aren't up to snuff… (including mine)

My biggest fear with modern bikes is the electronics failing when I'm out on a long ride.
THE BEST PART about this revenue was hearing the bike wanting to lift the front in 5th around the corner exit. That tells me more about the bikes power than any other review has. I cannot wait to get one of these.
Spot on commentary, great video, LOVE the new bike. Funny how that first ride feels so good after the break-in service is done! Enjoy that epic motorcycle!
I totally agree about the road test compared to endless videos etc BUT getting road tests to actually try a bike is REALLY hard. Dealers just don’t want the risk or mileage on their machines so trying to get any meaning time on a selection of options is all but impossible for non- CZcams/journalist’s.
The best moment on this bike was when I over took an Audi R8 V10 who wanted to have a play. We both looked dumbfounded as to what had just happened. I agree about YT bike reviews, including mine! Riding how we want to would quickly see us banned/shunned and generally told off. Sigh.
Overtook an R8..😨😨😨
Why on earth people still want superbikes ..🤕🤕🤕🤒🤒🤒
I have a 2020 SAS and I share Tim's giggle factor when I ride it... never fails to put a smile on my face. I somehow don't see a GS going that.
Think the current batch of adventure bikes are the sweet spot of all bikes. Can see why you are enjoying it so much. Slight tangent linked to your point about longer trips - some time back you mentioned the route Napoleon, and I finally did it this week on our way back home to SoF from Heidelberg, via Annecy and Grenoble, then to Grasse. There was a little snow near Chambery, but from there south it was just beautiful blue sky and mostly dry grippy roads.
You were right, what a spectacular route. Can see why some label it as one of the top ten rides of your life. I wasn’t on the bike, but in the family car (a current RS4, so was still good fun), so will have to make a point of doing it on the bike.
Long story short, if you decide to take that route and want a wing man or to do a direct comparison with a multi V4s with a full akro, then give us a shout 😃😃…..and I’ll meet you at Digne or Castellane or summink like that
I've watched almost all the reviews and first rides waiting for over a year to go test ride one but they didn't end up shipping the '21s to the States so I'm JUST now getting to see the '22s in person and it's an even more impressive looking bike than the reviews let on (Knox's was fantastic btw). But now that I'm looking to trade in the 790 Duke I think I'm just going to do a minor upgrade to the new 890 Duke R since I'm city riding 90%. Regardless, I'm in love with all things KTM and there's not another adventure bike I'd rather have atm. Hope it's nothing but good times with it, amigo!
This was quite entertaining. Now I really want to try one of those super adventures. (I think I actually might have tried a 1290 a long while ago, but I really wasn't into any kind of touring back then and it didn't really vibe with me at all.. sure didn't help that I thought it was supposed to go in mud as well, which the street tires made an absolutely horrible experience...)
My gen3 SDR is going in for a service in two weeks and I’m borrowing one of these for the day, I literally can’t wait to try it, can see me getting one next year maybe as it really is a do it all bike. Enjoy the new bike
Thanks! I think you'll find the engine is a lot tamer, but it's still lairy in the context of adventure bikes!
great vid Tim
When you realise you could have just stopped watching after Chris Northover's review 😁
Great vid mate..nice to hear your opinion on you tube reviews! Bikes are very individual just like music, women or choice of alcohol.. and the only way to know what ya like is to have a taste!
Nice video Tim! I heard Sam Vincent mentioned you (something with a whisky trottle wheelie 😂) and checked it out.
I like to hear you comments about the new PP Ergo seat! How it compare to the stock one, in comfort, feel and height.
Ah yes and did they adjust your shiftlever? Better now?
Oh god he talked about that?! I'm a professional! Haha. Yeah I've just got the high heated ergo seat (+20mm). I'm running it in the low position (lol), because in the high position I felt weird mid corner. Comfier over long distances, but feels much the same if you're just hopping on for a quick ride - where the stock seat would niggle after an hour, this one doesn't. They didn't adjust my shift lever - they said it wouldn't quite have clearance if it was any lower. So I took it home, adjusted it myself… and it didn't have the clearance not to foul the side stand springs. So I put it back where it was…
Interesting viewpoint and I agree to a degree. Sadly though, the majority of good quality bike reviews on the CZcams are from individuals/groups/companies that rely upon the revenue that said videos will generate. Therefore, they can't be seen to infringe upon the rules of CZcams for risk of demonitisation, things like wheelies, crazy overtakes, speeding etc etc will often see a video demonitised and so the content we see is generally geared more to the 'real world' rider.
I felt like the encased the engine actually limited in the first 1000 km?
Cor that was quick, usually mail from the UK takes a lot longer than that. Did you try the KTM Super GT? All too psychopathic for me on road and bulky off road. An 890 Adventure would be more than enough. Don't knock top boxes until you've used one. I put one on the back of my bike 2 years ago and it hasn't been off once. I know someone with one of those ugly as sin V8 hunchback Benzes. I thought he'd got a lovely classy C class 2 door - put my foot right in it.
Wow £1200 insurance, obviously matters where you live because in my rural location, on a GS £105.
I do exactly the same thing you do regarding bingeing on YooToob bike reviews and other idiots... I test rode about 15 bikes last summer (MT09, duke 890, Ducati SuperSport, Street Triple, etc etc. Couldn't really find one that was worth parting with the bike I actually own, which is a CBR650R that I absolutely still love and I ride like a t**t at every given opportunity. The saving grace being that when I do ring it's neck the thinking time between me and the tree/speed trap etc (insert freedom removing obstacle here) is greater than 100th of a second.
I'm sure I will replace it one day but your absolutely right, I'm gonna ride every other bike first before I do. 👍
Hear hear!
There are youtube reviews....and youtube reviews....I watched the Lamb Chops and 44teeth reviews of the SAS and was impressed, but I had ridden the bike already, so i knew what to expect. You are correct though - there are some dismal reviews out there....really dismal. BTW, I wouldn't be admitting that I don't know how to adjust the gear lever... ;-)
I really enjoy my SAS....and that is after a gen 3 Super Duke.
CZcams reviews are like the old old Top Gear. They're informative and you get a feeling of what is important to the tester but you don't get the look and feel that comes with actually looking at and feeling something yourself. Bikes are not just transport but they're also an extension of our own character and emotions...so you have to want to ride them and enjoy it and what's important to you might not be to the tester. It's how it makes you feel.
BTW I have a '21 SDR and pick up a new SAS next week. They have the same engine, albeit slightly differently tuned, but are completely different bikes.
Very well said. I would agree. I tend to watch CZcams videos on bikes to look at them up close. Check out the dash and get a variety of opinions. But I’ve ridden bikes I like that aren’t actually that popular on CZcams (and vice Versa).
Got fully comp with Devitt insurance for £370 with 4 years no claims (Although been riding accident free for 45 years).
That’s decent! A garage really helps
It's a problem with every YT reviews for any product. Everybody wants sponsorships so nobody will give an honest accounting of the products.
I bought a 2021 KTM 790 ADV and literally every outlet praised the electronics package. I got the thing, and none of the features even worked. I had to download a third party app from some random developer on Reddit just to get the GPS to display on the TFT dash. It was literally unusable and might as well have had an analog dash.
I take every bike review with a pinch of salt because they are so couched in the reviewers preferences (there is nothing wrong with that btw). They are useful in that you get a general idea of the bike but nothing beats swinging your leg over the stead and twisting the throttle. As an "old guy", I have a very particular sets of requirements for my type of bike and wheelies and thrashing the bike are not on the list of must haves 😀🏍🏍
Bike thieves doesn't start your bike n ride away, they pick your bike put in van n runaway. So i think you should install the alarm system apart from big lock with chains atleast they will be huge sound n it will attract people.
I can't imagine what kind of a pillion with right mind would actually sit on it..It will scare the soul out of them.
I kind of agree but stick it on CZcams and some wankspangle will bubble you to the old bill just look at teapotone it cost him his job.
Why’s your insurance so high?!!
He either lives in a war zone or has loads of points or even both. I am insured with the same company for a 1250 GS at £ 150 comp. Come on Tim - fill us in.
What £700 for insurance my ktm 1290 sas is only £350 for the year
My bike insurance is always expensive sadly… as soon as I put 'motoring journalist' down as my job the price goes up 😂
You getting a GLE 63...😨😨😨
Suppose all reviewers are different in their own way
Chris from bike world to see what a bikes capable of that you won’t get close to
Motobob boring as sin but saves you reading a spec sheet yourself
44teeth funny capable great group of funny blokes
American reviews avoid at all costs
Schaff similar to bike world without the review
The list goes on
Can mull over reviews for hours but you don’t know until you get out and ride them like you say
If I film it's most likely gonna be cruising along. Speed isnt what am about...
😂
What about bad "they / their / them's"?? 🤣 (I'm from the future and the world is a crazy place)
The sensible hoooligan..
I must be old …I really can’t see the point of the arms race in Sports , hyper nakeds and these massively powerful advs ? in first and second gear your smashing the speed limit ..you open the wick get the giggles for a few corners then it’s just pootling around following vans, lorries ,cars and cyclists to your destination. even out in the wilds in the uk how much of the power are you actually using on these monsters ?? I don’t get the tipping point that riders reach where they get into the stupidly dangerous acceleration, cornering and overtaking ..well I do actually it’s all about bragging about it in a car park or meet up (CZcams) ..because god do they like sharing their latest adventure…I’m not picking on bikes I feel exactly the same with cars …I can understand them on the track but on public roads ..really ??
I sort of agree with you - except part of the reason I like the KTM is how much fun you can have within the speed limit. Short gearing and epic torque make it as fun punching out of corners from 30mph as razzing along at high speeds. I'm a car journalist and thoroughly agree on the fast cars thing - just because it's so hard to enjoy a car properly on UK roads. Bikes are a slightly different matter...
