  • KTM 1090 Adventure was a bike I was not expecting to like, I thought it's not quick, it won't handle I dont have any deserts to cross, it's going to be extremely boring... How wrong could I be!

    I have to agree! I love the upright slightly leaned forward totally in control riding position, with a comfortable seat, smooth power and amazing handling you get with a premium suspension. I have the Adventure R and even with the TKC-80 tires it still handles amazing in the twisties. It really is a great do/all adventure bike! I'm in Canada and this bike really is a blast to see the country with, plus can you really take seriously any adventure bike with pokey chrome bits and a metal tank.

    This review is spot on! I bought one a few weeks ago, and I agree with everything you see about it. It is quick, comfortable and affordable(ish). No, it does not have 160hp and loads of electronics to make it usable, yes it has a lot of plastic parts, but overall
    it is a complete and well build machine.
    The only real issue I have with it it the screen. For me, it is barely usable at anything over 40mph. Very noisy and poor protection for my 1.96m. Trying the Puig large and small screens next, hope there will be a winner in there.
    Thanks for helping me choose this much underrated bike!

    Got my 1090R equipped with the blindingly bright Rade Garage Rally kit and other off-road goodies and I absolutely love the thing! Front tire came up on me today in 3rd gear and was not even really trying, and it eats up dirt in New Mexico like no one's business. Hoping to take this on a trip to Utah along with my brother and his 1290SAR in the near future. As always your videos are great!

    I have the 1090 2018 and it is really a diverse motorcycle.
    On a winding public road I am at the pace of the super sport. when riding off-road with the original tires it is possible to go through places where only high 4x4 get without a problem and it is also a fine touring motorcycle. The only problem I have is the screwed up windshield. Above 100 km/h I need ear plugs and above 150 km/h must bend. I put a spoiler that improved a bit but it's still not good enough. Beyond that, a cool motorcycle that is usually underrate compared to the R version. excellent video.

    What da hell is wrong with all manufactures that they are intently skip cruise control feature in this class of bikes. It's a bloody touring bike! Same problem with newest Africa Twin. I love to ride long distances and it just makes me nervous that I'd have to spend more for e.g. 1200cc adv touring bike to have cruise control. It's not a big challange to put CC in 800-1000cc class bike, even as an option, is it?

    Wow it's a lovely looking bike, i was a late starter with bikes, only started riding 3 years ago so when looking for my first bike ( a 125 ) i just wanted something as big as poss with me being tall and gangly ( is that a word ? ) so bought a Honda varadero 125, i don't like the idea of off road riding but neither does my bike, it tries to spit me off at the first sight of mud but seem's good in all condition's on the road with a pair of continental conti-go's, now i'm ready to pass my test i will still keep the baby varadero as a winter bike knowing what winter riding does to shiny bike's as my 1st bigger bike is an almost mint 97 zzr600 e5 with full service history and 32k mile's ( is that a lot for a zzr600 ? ) so i want to keep it that way. I will some day get another adventure bike with a bigger engine, i just love the look and at 42 years old with dodgy knee's and back already comfort appeal's, i hear a lot on review's that most adventure bike's don't really do off road well, should they be called urban adventure bike's instead ?

      I have a Z900 that manages 125 hp from 948cc, and after a tune will make that at the rear wheel.
      Twins may not produce the 'peak horsepower' that multi-cylinder engines will make, but they DO produce a lot of force (torque) in most places that a multi-cylinder engine does not.
      V-Strom 1000 is a 1,037cc V-twin and it's rated around 100 hp. Torque in spades however. I've run a demo of it a couple times and it does not lack power. Another 25 hp from the KTM would be very quick.

    If you ever get hold of the 1190 adventure you should really try it Chopsy, it is actually lighter than this 1090 but with more horsepower and torque =)
    I like the 1190 just because of that more than the 1290 Super adventure since that bike only has 10 hp more than the 1190 but weighs much more!

    • @inked-96
      @inked-96 Před 5 měsíci

      Since when is the 1190 lighter?

    • @mathias6423
      @mathias6423 Před 5 měsíci

      @@inked-96 I have put both of the bikes on a scale recently, the 1190 was 230 kg fully fueled, and the 1090 was 230 kg fully fueled as well. So the sites I looked on was wrong, they weighted exactly the same, with topped up tanks. However the 1190 is quite more powerful, you can feel the difference.
      I have not put the 1290 Super Adventure on the scale but according to several sites on the internet the "S" model weighs in about 240 to 250 kg fully fueled somewhere around that.
      So it seems the 1190 and the 1290 are pretty similar in power to weight ratio, and since the 1190 is a lot cheaper used right now, if I can find a bike with less miles on it, I might buy one =)

    • @inked-96
      @inked-96 Před 5 měsíci +1

      @mathias6423 See, whilst it may be identical in weight, I'd argue that given the 1190 is a fair few years older, It's more than likely lost a few ponies. I'm in the market for a cheaper adventure bike after selling my 1250GSA. I rode the 1190 and 1090 back to back. Whilst the 1190 did have a little extra in the midrange, the gearbox, suspension and overall ride weren't as nice as the newer 1090.. I'm more than likely going to buy the 1090, even over the 1290 super adventure s.
      I want to go back to a basic kinda bike, less the go wrong.. God, I sound like one of those old men on the forums haha. But, at 28, I don't wanna be around the world for anything to fail electronically.. which the newer ktm's are known for.
      I did like the 1190, but being older and having electronic suspension(non R) more to fail, more expense to pay out). Here in the UK, part availability is scarce at the best of times. I hear the airbox on the 1190 is a major fail point?
      I'd go for the non electronic suspension 1190R but as I'm a newish rider, I'm not 100% confident with the height of the thing at 880m, If I could lower it to 840/850mm I'd have one but not much online if regards to lowering it via a custom seat? Most suggest lowering springs which I don't want to do.
      Anyway. I've gone slightly of topic haha.
      I'm currently looking at a 2018 1090 Adventure(non R) 12k miles for £6100 with crash bars, addional lights, usb port, heated grips, quickshifter, centre stand and upgraded front fork cartridges and rear shock. Fully adjustable. Now, I know I can buy a genuine Cruise control kit for £500. So I'd be all in for £6600 and less prone to reliability issues.
      A 2021 1290 Super adventure S is £11,400 but every owner has spoken of minor issues or major issues.
      1190 is around the 6k mark, but is older, not as good suspension as the 1090, more power, not as smooth, but unless going with the R, I don't want another bike with loads of electronics as it's more to go wrong.. I also feel that if I bought the 1190 or 1290, it would diminish me wanting to ride my xsr900 on weekends as it's less powerful?
      Be interested to hear your thoughts.

      @@inked-96 WOW man, you really took your time with a great and complete answer, creds to you =)
      I agree with everything you wrote, the 1090 actually feels a bit more agile when you are riding it, so obviously what it says on the scale is not everything. Compared to your 1250GSA I bet they will all feel more agile and lighter when riding right ? And you are absolutely right about things to go wrong with more electronics, especially on these almost 10 year old bikes.
      Even though I have had 5 different KTM's and have a 690 Enduro -2020 right now, I never recommend KTM's to my buddies. All my KTM's and also my friends KTM's has had troubled and problems/issues. Both brand new and after some years =(
      So far I have had no problems with electronics, but I have had engine failures, recalls on new bikes about the brakes and that hydralic Magura cluth they have on many of their bikes which often has issues. So I would never take a KTM around the world if I am completely honest man.
      They are very fun bikes, but If you can find another brand to take around the world, I would suggest you do from one rider to another. I have never had any problems with the electronic suspension on my two KTM's I have had and nor have any of my friends. The latest bike I had with electronic suuspension was the 2017 Super Duke GT, it worked like a charm I really loved that suspension. But I had an engine failure on that bike, they switched the whole engine out under warranty and after that I traded it in.
      However, if you absolutely must have a KTM to take around the world, I would agree that the 1090 adventure which is a pretty basic bike, would be one of the better options, especially if you can find a good value one with low miles on it.
      Did you know that KTM has had so much problems with electronics breaking under warranty that they removed electronics from the KTM warranty completely 2020 ?
      You can look it up if you ever get a hold of what is covered in a new KTM bikes warranty, I saw it on forum and heard it from a friend that bought a brand new KTM Superduke 2021.
      I have not seen the warranty papers for myself but if it is true, it says a lot about how much problems KTM has. Anyways man, I hope you have awesome adventures around the world in the future, I myself also travel through europe every year, but on sport touring bikes. I love it
      👍

    Great ending mate, loved the comparison ;) test rode one of these after the 1290 duke and felt a little underwhelmed. Have you ridden the 1290 adventure? Couldn't help thinking that the 1090 had nothing on it except price.

      +Jelmer van der Meer very different... you can still have all most the same fun on this, yes it's heavier but it's faster for sure.. it can do great second gear wheelies.. it's more versatile for sure, more comfortable, faster & you can tour and do distance with luggage... if you could only have 1 bike.. I think it could be this!
