I recently moved to Austin, Texas after quitting my job at a law firm and deciding to go another path in life. The service industry is quite unpredictable but I am lucky to have found really kind coworkers and generous customers (and super tasty food)!

My oldest daughter was a server for a period in her life after college. News flash: Some people tip based on looks and biases rather than based on effort. Some based on effort but it’s not always fair. She had good nights though but there are some guests that no matter how nice she was. she saw her white or lighter skin coworkers do half the work and get more tips just because. I listened to her cries many a nights and frustrations over doing her very best just to get a 1.00 tip sometimes. I just saw a YT segment on NBC about tipping and how out of control it is. The owner of a popular ice cream store stopped allowing tipping and one of the reasons was because she saw that her black employees got less tips than her white employees, and she knew those employees worked just as hard as the others. I say all that to say, don’t assume that the other employees are doing something wrong or being nasty just because they have less tips than you. As much as I hate corporate America, i’m glad my daughter left waitressing during the pandemic and is now working in a corporate job. Unfortunately, we don’t live in utopian society that everything is fair and equal based on effort. Just keep that in mind.

Working as a server is absolutely backbreaking…..I remember the worst experiences during the days I had my period…It’s not for everyone!!! Also there were times
I felt so demeaned by customers that I would cry in the bathroom….again, it’s not for everyone
