Nice job, Chris. You guys always do everything properly, but let’s be honest ain’t no painter ever waited two hours for a primer to dry. They flash off in mere minutes these days, especially in the sun. We use shellac a lot for that reason alone.
But I’ve used this particular primer plenty over the years. It works fine. Two things folks should know though: it’s never going to eliminate that alligator look of old painted wood, and it will not restick loose peeling paint, which is what many people seem to think it’s designed for, and kind of how it’s advertised if we’re honest. But we all know If it’s loose it’s gotta go, so you definitely want to make sure the homeowner understands what is possible and what is not with this product.

Zinsser peel stop is a game changer. Like you mentioned it’s extremely important to communicate to the customers to align with their expectation as this will significantly improve the before vs after but is not a brand new look that can only be achieved with replacing most of the time. Keep up the great work as the goal is for us to continue to inspire others to build something awesome! 👍🏼

I just had to deal with my house with horribly peeling paint. First, the Wagner Painteater is one of the BEST tools I have ever purchased. It is just amazingly fast, not bothered if a nail is sticking out a little, feathers edges of paint and primer, and if you get to bare wood, doesn't hurt the wood (it doesn't sand). For doing all the fascia around the roof edges, I spent more time moving the ladder than using the Painteater because it is so fast. With a layer of peel stop primer before painting, the fascia looks near perfect. On the peel stop, I tried a couple of brands including the one shown here. But I found the Sherwin Williams PrimeRX peel bonding primer to work better. But it is quite expensive and costs more than twice as much. It is a "non-Newtonian" fluid in its behavior meaning that its viscosity does not stay the same when mechanically manipulated. This means that when you are brushing or rolling it, it temporarily gets a bit thinner. When you stop massaging it, it thickens again. For this reason, I think it fills smaller cracks and such a little better.

I appreciate your thorough explanation about Peel Stop primer. I have a Fypon architectural molded pilaster door surround plus colonial window headers that are 25 years old and only painted once. Some paint from door surround area has peeled to the point that the orangey foam base is showing, so it definitely needs attention. I like your recommended 3 coats which may be my solution to blend areas where paint has peeled. I’m reluctant to scrape since the product is not hard like wood. I will purchase a quart and try it out, then comment here about how far a quart will cover. I love CZcams training since it’s made my efforts payoff.

Only one suggestion-it would have been nice to see a closeup of the areas before and after the primer to get a sense for how much it levels it out. I've used their products for years and never been disappointed.

how does a peel bond primer compare to using an oil primer? i have a side of my house that was painted with latex on bare wood, of course 80% of it bubbled off and peels in big strips, and i don't want to end up with the same problem again. i know that an oil primer will soak into the wood and seal it well, how does the water based peel bond compare?
    what would you recommend?

We used tons of Zinsser alcohol based primer at Disney when I worked there! We primed drywall after removing heavy 54" vinyl to prep for the new vinyl! After sanding the drywall surface after the old vinyl pulled off some of the top layers of paper the Zinsser sealed the drywall surface really good to be able and come back with a skim coat of mud to fill in imperfections which may show through the new vinyl! Zinsser once again to prime the walls after mudding to have a good sealed surface for the new vinyl! Had to use good ventilation though in those hotels and offices where we worked as the alcohol primer was quite potent!

Plan on starting prep on a Monday, continuing a few hours a day after work, calling in on friday and having a 3 day weekend to get it completed. I have an exterior door that is in a courtyard wall. It is exposed to extreme Sun heat and occasional rain. I sanded it down to the bare wood put a primer on it and then used an exterior paint and now it is peeling and bubbling over the bottom half on both sides. I redid the door in my garage and took my time letting it dry between layers. I don't understand how this happened does anybody have any ideas? I looked it up and the most that I could find is that somehow moisture got trapped below the paint I don't know how that's possible. Oh I also used an exterior top coat. And before I started painting I wood filled any cracks and put silicone on the parameter of a missing window so that moisture would not get into the wood.

If Chris won't be able to respond, I'm quite sure he's using the wagner paint eater with the wheel that comes with the machine. I've been using one of those for a few years now on my jobs.

It's for interior, and exterior work. It works beautifully on peeling ceilings.
