- In this video I show the preparation that needs to be done in order to cure and fix peeling paint in a bathroom.
With materials like Zinsser Peel Stop and Plaster Primer like Optiva Primer for ceilings and walls make prep work alot easier to achieve the final result and to prevent it coming back.
Another neat and tidy job Daniel 👏
Thankyou so much mate
Nice job and good tips
Very good job mate and video. Its nice to see someone be honest about how long jobs take than the usual its only a couple of days work
Yes I knew there is alot of work when I viewed the room. I think alot of decorators turned it down as some refuse to strip woodchip
Brilliant job brilliant video
Thankyou mate 👍🏻
Great vid mate 👍
Thanks buddy
Love peelstop, bathrooms are always the culprits. Skipping mist coats should be a crime. Great video 👍
100 percent agree mate 👍🏻
How do you know the mist coat was skipped.
aaaaaahhhhhh maaaate ive been struggling with this for ages. i do rental repaints so i see this all the time. ive have some success with using SBR bond but its not really designed for this, also it seals the wall so it increases drying times. am gonna give this peel stop a try thanks. i found your channel when i was looking for tikkurila products so i will sub the channel and keep watching. many thanks for your time Daniel!
Many thanks mate. Much appreciated
As always it's always trial and error which makes you become a better decorator. It's a constant learning curve. Cheers Dan
Fantastic info and job but why, oh why didn’t they replace the old towel rail, light and mirror? They are unworthy of your efforts.
Thank you very much 😊
Regularly use Peel Stop , great product , would like to get hold of some of the triple thick Peel Stop but can't find a stockist over here , only in U.S as far as i can see.
Nice vid David.👍
Thankyou very much mate 👍🏻
Just got the triple thick, I'll let u know how it goes
...Nice!
Hi Daniel Very good video ,your spot on with th e prep work .The customer must be very happy with the finished job .I know it's old school but in some cases Alkli primer can get you out of trouble at times .Regards Chris 👍😁😊
Hey mate. Have you tried the B.I.N Aqua yet. Fantasic product
@@danielnugent2168 How does it compare to the original?
It's great stuff mate. I love it
You forget how good that red devil filler is.Just started using it again. Its on special offer at Crown decorating centre at the moment.
Mate I think it's the best light weight filler on the market. I've tried other brands and they are not a patch on the Red Devil.
nice job
Thanks mate 👍🏻
Thank you for the info, I have my ceiling paint cracking and chipping and there is a smooth plaster underneath 3 or 4 coats of paint. Just bought peel stop triple thick, I'll let you know how it goes.. thanks again
how did it go?
Hi there. 👋 I need your help finding the right type of paint for my bathroom. It's to paint over wooden surfaces which had old yellowed gloss I've already sanded down. Is there a water-based paint, for bathroom wooden surfaces which can withstand moisture exposure 💦 most recommended bathroom paints are designed for ceilings & walls 🤨
Strongly suggest to customer about installing a fan, helps 100%.
Filling over that after peelstop try toupret fine surface caullking board. it fills the small dents groves just perfect and doesnt flash/ grin through.
Great prep and job though 😀
Thanks mate much appreciated 👍🏻
Great video Dan, much appreciated. Can you tell us how long the job took you from start to finish? Also, how long did each stage take to dry before you moved on? Thanks!
Hi. I did all this in 2 half days so a day basically in total. Cheers Dan
Thanks for the reply. Was that to allow sufficient drying time? Would you recommend doing it all in one day? If so, can you give an approximate time for how long each stage takes to dry?
@@Ina_Xuseen Hi. I use Polyfilll caulk which you can do in a day or Isomatica which again can be done in a day. Any other brands I probably would wait until the next day as you might get that crazed effect happening when painting over wet caulk. Stay away from Geocel caulk as that always crazes. Cheers Dan
Great video thanks! Just to confirm, you do a mist coat on top of the Peel Stop and not before?
Hi mate
Yes do it after.
Peelstop first. Cheers Dan
Hi Dan, do you think you could of put some 60 grit on the mirka and taken the complete paint off the walls instead? I did a small artex ceiling to flat not long ago. Saved her getting it skimmed.
Also, do you brush all your peel stop on the wall or also use a roller? roller might start lifting the paint edges?
Great video 👍🏻
Yes mate I prefer to brush it on.
Yes the Mirka is fantastic for getting walls right back and even painted wood. Great bit of kit
The paint won't lift as the primer no peel stuff keeps it in place
Artex full od asbestos
V beginner DIYer here! Can I check I have the steps right please?
Scrap it, Peel Stop, sand and use filler (which one would be best pls?), plaster primer and then two coats of paint? Is that correct and would B and Q bathroom paint be suitable? Thanks so much- great video xx
Hi David, if peel stop was rollered on before any peeling took place would that still want to peel after? So could peel stop act as a prevention rather than wait till it starts peeling then cover?
Hi. I'm not sure but it does create a solid clear film which then you can paint over it with any product
Hi Dan, i have peeling on bathroom ceiling after two weeks. I applied Zinsser bin and dulux easycare bathroom over original coat, which I’m guessing wasn’t properly misted when the house was built 8 years ago as these two layers have peeled to bare board, with what was there already.
I’ve scraped back the peeling to a hard edge, applied peel stop, filled, sanded and applied another layer of peel stop to the whole ceiling to get a uniform base. Would you recommend I prime over this final layer with optiva, then luja 7 or go straight to luja 7 over the peel stop coat? Cheers
If you have any filler over the peel stop then touch them bits up with Optiva Primer but if not then straight on with Luja7. It's the very best you can get for bathroom ceilings. Cheers Dan
Thanks Dan… Much appreciated.
Great video. Do you need to prime after using the peel stop?
Yes.
I use Optiva Plaster Primer by Tikkurila
If you have a shower area that is only 25% of your bathroom where you have this problem and especially where the rest is not flaking what would you recommend to just repaint the whole area anyway? I’m wondering what your advice would be in my situation where I have this and also know that the paint that went on 2 years ago is dulux easy care bathroom which is a much thicker and water resistant type? Can you key it by light sanding and go over that with the Zinsser Peel Stop and just then use the Perma white for the whole area afterwards. I was worried about painting over the easycare stuff where it’s in good condition. FYI it’s a colour I don’t like and want to make white hence also not wanting to just patch repair/paint the shower area in my case. Great videos btw and thanks for sharing.
I would scrape back as much as possible then peel stop the whole area then fill. Then rub down and peel stop again. Then I would use 2 coats of Tikkurila Luja 7 new formula which is extra durable and anti mould. Tikkurila UK sell it online
@@danielnugentpainteranddeco557 great, thanks for the advice. FYI if it all goes wrong I’ll take your labour rate as I already know your material costs now 😂
Do I paint stop peel on all of the wall or just the parts that are peeling ? What grit sandpaper is best to use ? Thanks
You don't have to do the whole wall. A p80 is a good all round grit but I use p60 on rougher surfaces
I have a bathroom that is getting its first post new build paint. The builder just used matt paint used in the rest of the house. Upon painting a couple of areas next to the sink that have been splashed with water over the years came off with the roller. The second part came off annoyingly after the first coat went on! This new paint I'm adding is macphersons soft sheen trade. I primed the first areas with zinnser and then added mist coat after sanding zinnser. The patch peeling away on the rhs is about 18" in patches. Would you just mist coat, then fill and paint with soft sheen? Rest of the room is painted just this part below the sink level left. Thanks
Hi mate. I found the best solution is scrape back as much as possible then apply Zinsser Peel Stop. Let it dry thoroughly and then apply two coats of Tikkurila Luja 7 which is the toughest bathroom paint with anti mould built in and also is a nice matt finish that's scrubbable.
You can buy it online at Tikkurila.co.uk
@danielnugentpainteranddeco557 thanks. Some peelstop reviews are critical. I think my patch of paint flaked off poss due to getting wet and a polished plaster. I've sanded it and given soft sheen acrylic seems to peel nonstop.
Maybe a no-nonsense screwfix primer will do and sand down as it's just a coat of paint or two for filler then mist coat and fine fill any spots plus two soft sheen macphersons?
@@fallofdutee you can try Optiva Plaster Primer by Tikkurila that's good for bare plaster
Great video! Very informative. I've got a small area in the bathroom doing this...worried it will just expand...what do I do? Just that area or the whole wall???
Scrape back as much as you can even if it is the whole area. Then use this as a sealer. Great primer as this problem happens alot in bathrooms where the fist coat of paint has been put on neat and not thinned out so it doesn't bond to the plaster. Cheers Dan
@Daniel Nugent Painter and Decorator thank you Daniel! If the whole area doesn't scrape off, do I use the primer on affected area only or whole area even where paint is still good?
@@Shah2 just where its loose and go over all the edges of where its solid. No need to do the whole ceiling if alot is fine. Cheers Dan
Thank you so much!
I need to do this to my bathroom. Its peeling and has the same as your video with a room with no exhaust fan. I will follow the steps on your video. Any advice you can give me?
Strip back as much as you can. Zinsser Peel Stop the area. Skim with filler. Rub down and Peel Stop again. Then when all dry two coats of Tikkurila Luja7
@@danielnugentpainteranddeco557 Thank you so much! I will follow those steps!
Great video id consudered using a primer . . I had bad perlong at a window reveal section i brkieve any keak has been remedied . Hooefulky no bridging going on . But seems to have dried i guess .....ill try this method and hopdfully this time no bubbling . How annoying 😊
Mate it happens in this game but I've only learned from trial and error. Cheers 🍻
@@danielnugentpainteranddeco557 very true np happy days ty
What roller sleave do you use ?? good video
For a small area I use a 6.5 inch Wooster Super Fab sleeve. You will need the Wooster jumbo koter mini frame aswell
Can you use any filler in a bathroom or is there a special filler just for bathrooms and lichens because of the moisture ??
You can use any as long as you protect it with a primer
hi mate i need some advice i have a clinet who got a water mark on her ceiling in kitchen could i use blockade to cover it up?
As long as the area is dry and not wet. If the water mark is a sort of ginger colour, then that should mean that it’s dry. Any sort of stain block should work. I’d recommend a spray for small areas, but the paint version for larger areas.
Zinsser Cover Stain is good but yes blockade and B.I.N. I've never tried the waterbased Zinsser over water damage but yes go for it as Blockade is Shellac based so use meths to clean out your brush after.
Hey quick question, could I use this on outdoor painted brick before painting with masonry paint?it’s just the brick around front door all peeling. Thanks
Use Sandtex Stabilising Soliciton for outsoors
@@danielnugentpainteranddeco557 Thanks appreciate that, wish I’d of seen this video before I scraped and steamed every last inch of paint off my bathroom lol
Hi …. Have you used PeelStop over old distemper paint ? Cheers
Not yet mate. Use to use oil stabilised solution so may be this or the sandtex stabiliser would Di it
Hi fella. What roller you using there? I’m looking for a good 6-7” that holds a decent amount of paint for small rooms like this without leaving loads of orange peel
Hi mate
It's a 6.5 wooster Super Fab roller 1/2 Nap.
I got it from MyPaintbrush online and remeber you need the Wooster Jumbo Koter frame aswell. All sold on that site.
Cheers Dan
@@danielnugentpainteranddeco557 cheers mate
How would you emulsion newly plastered bathroom walls ? Obviously it's common practice to mist coat with a contract matt but that's not going to prevent moisture ingress, if using a proper bathroom emulsion can you mist coat with that first ?
I'd use optiva plaster primer then 2 coats of Luja 7.
Both by Tikkurila.
If you can't get access to these then yes mist coat 1st coat and then use a suitable bathroom paint
@@danielnugentpainteranddeco557 thank you that's great advice , I've no problems getting tikkurila paints as theirs a supplier not too far from me , only ever used the everal aqua and was quite impressed with it . Thanks again 👍
Do we put the primer on the whole wall?
If its bad then yes. If its isolated areas then you don't have to. Cheers Dan
Have you ever used this product to paint over distemper? I need to repaint my bathroom but the previous owners used Farrow and Ball "casein distemper" which apparently can't be painted over directly with emulsion!
I used to use a penetrative oil sealer but I suppose Zinsser products are the way to go I think Zinsser Grade 1 primer and finish is best. Here's a link below
www.zinsseruk.com/howto/paint-limewash-distemper-walls/#:~:text=Patch%20prime%20all%20bare%20and,Allow%20to%20dry.
So you sand after applying the peel stop?
Yes just a light denib
Does peel stop has a strong smell like zinsser ?😢
No smell at all as its water based.
So it’s pva
It is similar but has stronger properties added
Prep properly .......take the towl rail off mate
Scrape it all off, don’t be lazy, then pva the walls and size them whilst the pva is still tacky, then use lining paper for the PERFECT finish, finally paint over the lining paper with Dulux Quick Drying Eggshell, 3 coats at least. That’s what I do and still looks good in 15/20 years. Easy to clean, I wouldn’t use anything else ever, tried them all, they are all rubbish except for Dulux Quick Drying Eggshell.
Lining paper in a bathroom ? No mate just plaster skim coat, mist coat then 2 top coats of an acrylic eggshell or silk finish,if matt as here then a hardwearing, regarding Dulux being the best absolute rubbish, from a painter with > 38yrs Exp 😉
@@TheWESTSIDE1967 yeah sure, if you say so 😆
@@themanwhobeateinstein 38 yrs & highly recommended says so, who puts paper in a bathroom moisture & wet area ? Amateur
