Really pleased I watched this video for the excellent tips, I've always used polyfilla on flaking paint and never knew of Toupret, Toupret was so easier to use and sand down plus it dried quickly.👍
Thanks, exactly what I was looking for!
Thanks a million. You made it sound easy!
You're welcome!
Great video. Love the detailed explanation. Just wondering how to do this for coving?
Really helpful video and using easy to source products. Many thanks 👍
Glad it was helpful!
Great. Video. Easy to understand. Thanks
Tip - before you put away your fiulling kit, give it a base coat of undercoat/primer - its amazing how much difference it makes to see imperfections you might want to give another filling .
Great tip, thanks 👍
Liked and subscribed. Cheers!
Exellent job😊
Thanks!
Great video
Thanks 👍
Cheers for this video.......wish me luck!
Good luck!
Thank you : )
Zinnser make good products for jobs like this.
Thanks for the instructional video
I agree, I've used the zinnser bin also on old damp patches. Works well. Thanks for the feedback 👍
Nice one cheers 👍❤️🇬🇧
No problem 👍
Spot on
Thanks for watching 👍
Thanks a lot , Good explaintion
Glad you liked it.
Your second pronunciation is the right one. It is a play on the French words “Tout Prêt” which means basically “all ready”.
I’m your new subscriber amazing and great Channel you have ☺️
Thank you.
@@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE your welcome
Pronounced too pray. Best filler there is! No flashing, no shrinking. Brilliant stuff
Agree, it's great stuff, works really well hense why I chose to do a video on it. Thanks for watching 👍
@@POUSEaroundtheHOUSEit might a leaking gutter.
What did you use between the wood and the wall? to seal it? great video.
V good vid
Thanks for watching 👍
Do you not need to use peel stop on whole patches as well as edges & what consistency of water/paint for mist coat? I’m using zinser mould resistant paint for primer & top coat so should I mist coat the first coat then use normal for second? Am applying all to plasterboard that is prone to damp.
did you have to use any stain blocker around the area you patched or on the 2nd coat of paint that darker area will go away?
Great video. Thank you. When do you know when to stop scraping?
As mentioned in the video until the paint feels firm and requires effort to scrape off. If it just keeps going you may be better off having the whole wall re-plastered. Always try to remove the cause of the flaking before any repair. If it's damp for example, that needs fixing first. Best of luck and thanks for watching.
Help please - I have hanging tiles on front of house, they're covered with a crumbling surface colour to make the plain colour look terracotta. What do I use to stop the surface treatment from crumbling off before painting, thanx!
Great video. Thanks. Did you put a layer or two of miscoat on before painting? - that may have been why it flaked in the first place.
When I did my loft conversion, I took my gutters off for a while, the heavy rain caused damp in the wall. The house is victorian amd the cavity is probably bridged with old mortar causing the moisture to travel inside. The damp is gone now but it left the plaster slightly blown and caused the pain to peel. Thanks for watching 👍
I used adhesive stickers to hang art work. When I took the artwork down the paint came with it smh. Will this be the way I fix the patches on the wall??
I have a grey wall, how to do the repair please? Thank you
Great video. I've bought the same Peel Stop and Toupret, following from your video. Question; When I've used the Toupret and sanded it once it's dry , can I use emulsion straight on top, or does it need to be watered down for the first coat? Thanks.
Mist coat first
cool
Glad you enjoyed the vid 👍
Hi I’ve just taken some wallpaper off my ceiling and found chunks of flaky paint was underneath it. How do I get it all off?
I would love you to do a video on cracked peeling paint but on a bathroom ceiling , would you use the same method , we tried all sorts but nothing works , we have also had a new extractor put in
The repair would be the same, but if it keeps happening then you will need to find the cause and fix that first. It could be moisture from the bathroom, or the plaster was never given a good mist coat of paint, or maybe you need to try a different paint. Unfortunately it's often process of elimination but good ventilation and keeping a room warm is always a good start. Best of luck with it 👍
Hi. Thanks for the great tutorial. How would you go about painting over this if you have some exposed plaster after the sanding? Would I need to prime the area or apply a mist coat? or would the normal topcoat be ok? Many Thanks!
Mist coat first
Peel Stop makes both a sealer and primer. What's the difference?
If we have textured walls would I do the texture spray before painting or after a different step
Not entirely sure what you mean, but you always want your paint on last...or it won't be painted! Hope that makes sense. Thanks for watching and best of luck.
Does this work for eaves as well? I’ve got a lot of flaking paint that I’m scraping off and have the primer and paint ready to go, it was concerned the uneven bits would be visible where I scraped off some paint
This filler is for interiors. For exterior work you need an exterior filler. Hope that helps.
Hello did you mistcoat or use primer/undercoat over the filler before painting? Please let me know I would appreciate your help! 😊
No I didn't. Only because the product says it's ready to paint straight over. I didn't have any issues but it won't harm to that if you want. Best of luck.
What is the cause of this bubbling? My friend has a terraced house and the internal dividing wall, there is various spots where the paint has peeled and is bubbled. Mind you, a cheap screwfix matt paint was used which was shit. Would bubbling be a sign of dampness?
You can never say without looking at it. It can be damp, or condensation, or salts in the brick or plaster affecting the paint. On old houses especially Victorian there is often no damp proof course and the old mortar that was used often has salts which seem to react with modern plasters causing flaking. I've had issues where radiator pipe work is close to the wall. The change in temperature, and more so the cold from the copper in winter when heating is off seems to drawer the salts out causing a light flaking / dust from the paint. It's never always as simple as one problem for all unfortunately! Thanks for watching and best of luck.
Yes I'm available to fix it
can a bog standard pendent ceiling light be fitted in a bath room as long as its not over the sink and is well away from walk in shower
You need to check bathroom zones in the wiring regulations which will give you exact dimensions. Hope that helps.
How do you paint over the toupret? Can you just use normal emulsion out of tin or do you need to mist coat?
Mist coat first
I’d have primed the bare plaster first after applying the peel stop, with Zinser guardz and/or Zinser primer?
I always use BIN 123.
Thanks for the tips 👍

How long for it to dry?
Da boss
Thanks!
If you have a number of patches to fill I would use Easyfill 60
Easifill is getting alot of bad reviews lately
Thanks for the advice. I really like toupret pre mix. Very workable for a novice. Thanks for watching 👍
@@hardworker8030 I've not seen any bad reviews on Easyfill 60 , the only problem I have is that it is quite expensive. Screwfix (B&Q) have their own brand of filler which is cheaper, I might try that.
Hi Pouse. Don't suppose you have any tips on fixing cracks cause by thermal expansion?
Depends what surface has cracked? What material is it?
@@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE Plaster on concrete block.
You could make the cracks a touch wider by running the edge of a filling knife down them, then fill with a suitable filler a bit like in the video. Or the other option is to put scrim tape over the cracks amd prep the wall ready for plastering, and give the wall a new skim of plaster. Check out some of my plastering videos for more information.

@@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE Thanks for the advice. I'll give your plastering series a watch.
Im in b&q and they dont have that Toupret stuff man 🤦🏻♂️
So stressful.
Screwfix or toolstation? Best of luck 👍
Brilliant stuff .
Glad you didn't use PVA ;)
Only thing I'd add is, you could have gone over the whole bare plaster area, it would have helped for applying the filler.
Thanks for the tip 👍 I use pva for plastering but I find if any rogue pva gets on a plastered wall, it's a nightmare to paint over, hense why I've been using peelstop. I've used this combo a few times over the past year with great results, hense why I did the video. Thanks for watching and best of luck with your channel 👍
@@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE yeah. PVA isn't Alkali resisting... Plaster is an alkaline surface and that's what you get problems using PVA on bare plaster and also issues when painting over PVA.. as it's softens up with the moisture of the paint.
PVA, ideal for surfaces before you plaster or fill up.
Not for surfaces your putting finish paint on etc.
Gardz is good too ... Have you done a video on that yet?
No, maybe one for the future!
The source should be determined before repair! 🤓
Paint loses adhesion due to moisture from behind. Moisture can travel due to change in temperature.
I agree, however this video was more to show the process of the repair. Often it is due to plaster not having a correct mist coat of paint. If it's damp, it's likely to present itself in several places. Thanks for the feedback.
@@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE fit looked like the window was the source of moisture and it traveled down and to the left
My concrete window mullions flake what ever I do, I’ve painted them every year
I think you need to establish what is causing the flaking first. What you've done is a good repair but depending on the cause you could be wasting your time and money.
I agree. This video was to cover the process of the repair. I have done other videos on damp and how to overcome it. I've also done a video on a proper mist coat (1st coat) of paint on fresh plaster which done incorrectly can cause these issues. Thanks for the feedback.
Dont forget to test for lead/asbestos
Thanks for the feedback.
3-4 weeks later, it comes off again!
I'm know it's a lot of boring editing work, but I'm sure I'm not the only one wanting to see the end of the work on the loft conversion. I'm sure you said a good while back that it was all finished, any chance you'll push through and get the videos up some time soon?
I've got a load of video footage I lost. The data is currently trying to be recovered costing me a small fortune! So yes, my intention is to get it all uploaded if the data is recovered. I appreciate it's been 6 years since the first upload! 😂 Thanks for sticking with me.
@@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE What a nightmare to have lost the footage 😭 . If you can't recover it, I for one would certainly love to see a video of the finished article, as in, how it is now, even if we miss a few steps along the way.
Whiteout knowledge you come not forwards
They only have Toupret SMOOTHING FILLER ?? Is that ok??
Fine surface filler is best for this job as it will fill less than 1mm. Best of luck with it.
@@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 2 months ago man 😆 thanks tho
After peel stop I wish u put mist coat then filler
You don't need to mist coat toupret, it's different to normal plaster. Thanks for watching.
What about bathroom ceiling?
Good video... I have a ceiling that's flaking in parts so i'll be following this process but I'll use my trusted EasiFill as my filler. Cheers 😀
I pronounce it Toupret.
Very good 😂
Dam salt in the plaster because it wasn't sealed propper from beginning
This was actually due to penetrating damp from having no gutters for a period of time. But as you say, it brought the salts out. Thanks for the feedback and thanks for wacthing.
It's frog language, it's to-pray!
I thought so but no accent over the 't' so thanks for clearing that up and thanks for watching 👍
You could use pva glue for a primer, which i supose is more or less what you was using ,but in a different tin inder a different name, But good video
Thanks for the feedback. I use pva for plastering and it's definitely not pva. But I guess they do perform a similar function. Thanks for watching 👍
thanks for the reply
Pva is harder to paint over if you dont fully cover it with filler .
Zinsser guards is actually better for this. The peel stop is more like a stabilizer which works better on chalks surfaces. Ive used the peel stop a number of times on flakimg paint and it always peels again. Been using the guardz for a while now and no such issues!
Someone else mentioned guardz. I've never tried it but I'll give it a go when I next need it. Thanks for the advice 👍
90% of pro decorators get the n
Name wrong ! It's not two pret .Is pronounced like the French say Too pray .Worked for them for years and Toupret translates to 'ready to use'
Great video .. but 8hrs!! Use easy fill 20 minutes. You'll be home in 2hrs
It's a lovely product though, very smooth and easy to trowel on. I'll give the easifill a go sometime. Thanks for the feedback 👍
The walls were never primed in the first place that's why it peeled.
When you say primed what do you mean? In this situation it was damp from gutters that were removed and the walls got wet for a prolonged period. Thanks for watching.
