  • Today we set off to catch one of the best tasting fish you can catch in the surf on Oak Island. today we are pursuing pompano. What will that take? It will take the right rig, the right bait, a little luck and persistence.

    I’ll be in Oak Island all next week, never done much surf fishing but I’m gonna give it a try while the kids play. Sounds like You recommend Double drop Pompano rigs with sand fleas? What about fresh shrimp? Helpful video!

      Was out today using sandfleas and fresh shrimp. Both were working well with the whiting. Having caught any pompano yet.

    The flap is their digger. A little trick i learned tying double drop rigs and putting floats on is use the tag end of your line run it thru the float then thru the loop and back thru the float. Then just push or pull your float on to your loop. I normally this with the ends im going to put my snap swivel for my sinker or my swivel. Also a little trick i learned to find sand fleas go out during night with a flashlight and you can find them by the dozens. You can find them during the day but they are always deep.

    We try every summer on oak island for pompano, when I hooked the 18” beast a couple weeks ago it just makes me want to go even harder to find some

    Wave when you come by my dock in your pontoon boat- we have old family friends who come here every year in August. They would love a tour. I’ll tell them to ask for you. Love the restaurant reviews. Glad you finally got a Pompano. Let me know when you have time for fly fishing.

    With all the coquina on the beach this past weekend i was using the pink clam fish bites and it worked really well on TI. I don't know if they were down there where you are but if they are you might want to try that. Great video as always,thank you for doing it.

    Have you fished over near the lighthouse with any luck?

      I’ve fished Caswell near the hot hole. I’ve always done better on the rising tide, not so good at low tide though

    At 6:40 when you are holding that shark by the tail. For a shark weighing less than 30 lbs, grab it by the dorsal fin. That's way easier. Make sure you hold it out away from you thigh, though.

    From Charlotte here and fishing Lake Norman hybrids/striped bass.
    Been wanting to take the wife and kids to Oak Island. Maybe we’ll get out there this summer.
    Is there a pier or banks to fish pompano from or is it just at the beach?
    Thank you!

    • @SandsintheSurf
      @SandsintheSurf  Před rokem

      There are two piers on Oak Island, Ocean Crest Pier and the Oak Island Pier (used to be the yaupon pier). However for pompano, I’d think you’d do best just fishing from the surf.

    What type of line do you prefer to tie your riggs? Mono or Fluorocarbon?

    • @SandsintheSurf
      @SandsintheSurf  Před 2 lety +1

      I use mono. I don’t feel our water is clear enough, at least not in the surf, the pay the extra for fluoro. But if I was fishing in Florida…

    I've got a much simpler double drop rig to tie. Never buy another double rig again
