Fish along with Ian Sands of Sands in the Surf on beautiful Oak Island, NC. We’re fishing the surf and surrounding areas targeting everything from puffer, to blues, to black and red drum, to sharpnose and bonnetheads.

We went fishing near the point on the Montgomery Slough side and in about two hours caught four slot redfish and around ten black drum. And the best part is, we weren't even there to fish!

Glad to have found your channel. Watching from Durham, planning an October coast trip. Would you say OKI is as good as anywhere in the vicinity that time of year? Hoping to do a bit of fly fishing while I keep a line soaking for dinner. You do some great videos, will have fun living vicariously til I get out there!
@@joef1299 I mean, you can’t compare OKi to say, the OBX but we have some great fishing in October. I would add the family friendly, low density aspects of OKI are really the perks. As for fly fishing, I’m still working on it but do plan to be out there again this weekend!
@@SandsintheSurf yeah, was originally planning on OBX (maybe try to get into some albies!) but in part thanks to your videos, and the perks mentioned, am now thinking Oak Island maybe the ticket. When you say can’t compare is the fishing not similar/on par? Thanks for answering my ignorant Qs. If you’re getting into fly fishing I’ve been tying for ~20 years and would love to send some flies your way if ever in need.

@@jacksonlanders5336 I’m not so sure the size of the vessel matters as much as the motor. I had a John boat I didn’t count but did count my 17’ sea and fish.

@@artc9234 being from NY, this is a tough question lol. But I do like pepperoni grill. Also Sebys makes a sausage broccoli rab sandwich and uses pizza dough for the bread… outstanding!

Good Spanish. I would say the long runs that broke are 100 %sharks. Unfortunately and def not tarpon. If I was you, I would focus on spot, blue, and ICW fishing. It’s just not a good time of year. Typically I fish for Shark during the summer at night. The peers do not like it during the day but that’s an option too. Go in October and Nov!

Went to 47th Street Pub last weekend. Food was pretty good, beers were cold, staff was friendly. Sat outside by the bar, can’t say I’ve ever gotten sunburnt at a restaurant before. I would definitely go back there. We got wings, crab crake sandwich, and steak frites, all which were good.

Staying at oceanwalk on 56th until Friday if you wanna link up and do some surf fishing. Ive been watching your videos in preparation of coming here but havent had much luck yet. Just a single pinfish. I think my rigging may be to blame. My first time ever using circle hooks as well.
I'm heading to OBX later this year and it'll be my first time surf fishing myself, I've seen some people use hi-low rigs, some use a fish finder rig. What would you say works best? As well, I've been trying to find info on what the preferred line type is, I would assume braided with a flouro leader, but I couldn't find anything specific. This video will definitely be a useful reference while I'm out but I wanted to pick some more vetted anglers brains on this matter.
@@noahlogan4436 double drop rigs with shrimp work well for a number of fish including whiting, pompano, black drum. I like Carolina rigs with live minnows for larger species like blues, Spanish, reds. Mono line works fine and it’s cheap. And then you don’t need Fluor. Unlike Florida, our water is too muddy to make a difference

@@jaredrotenberry7263 should be a good spot but with all the rain and storms makes fishing the surf difficult. All my trips this week were scheduled and then rescheduled. Uggh

@@jaredrotenberry7263 its not you, it’s been a tough week with all the storms and rain. Lots of seaweed, dirty fresh (not salt) water mixing makes it hard.

You can cut squid into strips, pat them dry, and cover in salt for a week or so. I store in a fridge but you don’t have to keep cold while fishing. Easy go to bait that still catches fish!

That's just how Surf fishing goes at times. I'm a High Tide surf fisherman, but i will fish the low tides also. Like they say, A bad day of fishing beats the heck out of a good day at work any ol' time catching em or not, you just can't be in a better place and the scenery is God's gift to us and we should thank him for it and please pick up your trash and put them in the trash cans located most of the time as you come in to go on to the beach. Thanks guy for your tips that will help mostly beginners who really don't know or could be using the wrong baits or let's just say equipment. 😊
What local shop near OKI would you recommend to buy a rod/reel/rig/hooks?
there are several good shops but you can't go wrong with Dutchman's Creek. They have everything you need and the staff is great! Tell them I sent you ;)

Me and the family just came down to OKI and i was wondering if you could tell me the best bait shop for live shrimp i haven't had luck. Also if you had any good public spots besides in the surf. Any advice would be appreciated! Love the content!
@@jaydnloving5884 Clems usually has live shrimp. Dutchman’s Creek also has live bait. Usually fiddlers, shrimp and minnow but it’s best to call and check cause they can sell out quickly. I like the Southport Pier. It’s free and there is lots of structure. I don’t like too many of the public spots on OKI like Veterans Park for example cause all I ever catch is croaker. There is a dock at 6th street west, Davis Canal, that I like at high tide.

Is a 10/0 hook to big for sharks or should I bump down to 5/0?
@@the_mythical_manatee1245 I use a 5/0 hook for smaller sharks in the 3 to 4 foot range. A 10/0 sounds really big but I guess if I were fishing for bigger sharks…

@@larrykempton2092 we actually did but the camera ran out of battery before we were finished. Shagger Jacks scored a 31, Tipsy Tuna and 49th tied at 33, Paul’s received a score of 43, and Tranquil was number one with a score of 50.
Adding to that, The runner up scores, Paul’s was number 1 in flavor and heat. Tipsy was runner up in texture (crispy outside/juicy inside), and Shagger Jacks was number 1 in meat (meat to bone ratio)
