  • After three days fishing, the bite finally turned on and we landed a few Spanish mackerel right from the surf fishing on Oak Island. Was it the rig? Was it the tide? Was it pure luck? We will explore all three and then cook up a very tasty Spanish mackerel dinner. We will also stop by Tranquil Harbor for a great fish sandwich meal!

    Just had Tranquil Harbor a few days ago. It never disappoints.

    Make a scaled down king rig. Treble for the mouth, another hook for the body. That eliminated the problem for me

      That’s a really good idea.

      That’s the best type of live bait rig right there... I even seen people use it on dead slimeys and cigar minnows

    Always enjoy your videos and your restaurant reviews. Thanks for all the work you do. I’ll be down first weekend of October . Can’t wait! I always had more luck catching Spanish and Blues on gotchas off pier. Hope to catch my first redfish!

      I do plan to walk the beach tossing lures. I’d really like a false albie. I’ve seen them jump but never hooked one.

    Wife and I will be fishing OI Surf from Oct. 8th though the 24th...targeting the Bull Reds. Hope to see you there. we usually fish anywhere from 51stW to the Point. Occasionally, we try the Hot Hole at Caswell. Look for the FishnMate Cart with Big Gray Tires and a Tan liner. Tite Lines!...Chip

    Great video! We were down week before last. Several people were catching Spanish off of Ocean Crest. I fished all week and unfortunately I never got one.

    So, isn't that float rig you made, similar to a fish finder rig?

    • @SandsintheSurf
      @SandsintheSurf  Před 3 měsíci

      Yes. The Carolina rig and fish finder rig are very similar

    Do you ever use croaker for live bait?

    • @SandsintheSurf
      @SandsintheSurf  Před 3 lety +1

      I’ve never been very successful with croaker however I’ve heard small ones are great especially for sea trout.

    At none of the locations did you mention beach structure. Did you choose these locations because you expected to find cuts and/or troughs? Or, was it sufficient to simply cast far out to deeper water on the incoming tide?

    • @SandsintheSurf
      @SandsintheSurf  Před 2 lety

      I wasn’t as much concerned with structure because the bait was all over. I do like to look for drop offs.

    My wife and I live on oak island and we are terrible at surf fishing! Any way we could hang out with you some time so we can actually learn to fish better? Any and all advice would be appreciated.

    Will be hitting 43rd East next Thursday and Friday. Will Spanish always cut mono?

    • @SandsintheSurf
      @SandsintheSurf  Před 2 lety

      More likely the blues will cut you off. I caught one of those Spanish on the store bought double drop rig so that shows it doesn’t always take anything fancy. Still, they do have a good set of teeth.

    Did you say you bled the Spanish mackerel also?

    • @SandsintheSurf
      @SandsintheSurf  Před 2 lety +1

      I did. Not sure if I needed to like I do with bluefish but didn’t see a reason not to.
