  • Selaginella lepidophylla or resurrection plant - back from the dead in 3 hours!
Selaginella, commonly known as spikemoss or lesser clubmoss, is a fascinating group of plants that are often mistaken for mosses due to their appearance. These plants belong to the family Selaginellaceae and are not true mosses but rather primitive vascular plants related to ferns. Selaginella species are known for their delicate, feathery appearance and their ability to thrive in various environments. Here's an overview of Selaginella varieties:
    1. Selaginella kraussiana (African Clubmoss): This variety is often used as a ground cover in terrariums or shaded garden areas. It has dense, spreading foliage that creates a lush carpet-like effect. It's known for its vibrant green color and prefers humid conditions.
    2. Selaginella uncinata (Peacock Spikemoss): This variety gets its name from the way its iridescent blue-green foliage resembles peacock feathers. It's a popular choice for adding a splash of color to shaded gardens or indoor displays.
    3. Selaginella lepidophylla (Resurrection Plant): This unique variety is known for its ability to survive extreme dehydration. When water is scarce, the plant curls up into a ball-like shape, and when rehydrated, it unfurls and comes back to life. It's a curiosity and often used for educational purposes.
    4. Selaginella martensii (Martens' Spikemoss): With its compact growth habit and fine-textured foliage, this variety is ideal for rock gardens, borders, or as a ground cover in shaded areas. It has a distinctive appearance and tends to stay small.
    5. Selaginella denticulata: Native to Southeast Asia, this species features intricately patterned leaves with toothed edges. It's often grown in terrariums and is admired for its delicate beauty.
    6. Selaginella erythropus (Copper Spike Moss): This variety has a reddish-brown hue to its foliage, giving it a unique and eye-catching appearance. It's commonly used as a decorative plant in gardens or containers.
    7. Selaginella apoda (Meadow Spikemoss): This species is known for its creeping growth habit and bright green color. It's often found in moist, woodland areas and can create a carpet-like effect when planted in suitable conditions.
    8. Selaginella tamariscina: Also known as Shanliejiana, this species is native to Asia. It features attractive, needle-like foliage and is often used in traditional medicine in some regions.
    9. Selaginella wildenowii (Wildenow's Spikemoss): This variety has finely textured, dense foliage and is commonly used in terrariums or shaded garden areas. It adds a touch of elegance to plant arrangements.
These are just a few examples of the many Selaginella varieties available. They vary in size, color, and growth habit, making them versatile choices for different gardening and landscaping projects. Selaginella plants generally thrive in moist and shaded environments, making them popular choices for indoor displays, shaded gardens, and terrariums.

    Totally LOVE this!
Why aren’t people being corrected about spreading false information in regards to this beautiful plant? Videos are plastered all over social media saying that this is the “Rose of Jericho” (Anastatica hierochuntica) which is not true at all. Luckily I did some research but most people don’t!
    Love your posts!
