  • Apollon, born Louis Uni in Marsillargues in 1862, was a massively influential French strongman and performer. Cutting a large figure from a young age, Apollon ran away from home at the age of 14 to join the circus as a strongman. Apollon was noted for his grip strength but his brute strength was notable as well - the frenchman could clean and jerk 341 lbs. and famously hoisted two train wheels, weighing 366 lbs., overhead. This is where the familiar strongman implement "Apollon's Wheels" gets its name." In our second Legend's series installment, we visit Apollon's hometown as well as some notable locations from the strongman's life.

I'd like to have the references of the books seen in that documentary. I'm always surprised to see how strength culture was huge in my country and has mostly disappeared today.

Hell yeah man... I most definitely 3rd this! In fact, The IRON Master & Goernerr the Mighty are EASILY amongst my ALL-TIME Favourite TOP 5 LEGIT Oldetime Strongmen, by FAR! Alongside and next to Alexander Zass a.k.a. The Amazing Samson, Joseph L. Greenstein a.k.a. The Mighty Atom & The EPIC Muscle Control Master, Maxick!
So yeah man, I definitely CAN'T wait 'till they're gonna do one for Hermann Goerner, Alexander Zass, Joseph L. Greenstein & Maxick---as they've already DONE one of Arthur Saxon---and a damn good & awesome one at that! 😎💪👊

His hands are ridiculously huge. What a monster. I often wonder what would these legacy athletes think if they knew how long they would be remembered. What would be their reaction to know that millions of people are watching a documentary about them 100 years later on a device that conveys information instantaneous.

Dr. Terry and Jan Todd speak of these legends with such passion and genuine admiration. It's like hearing someone tell you family stories. The Todd family is a treasure of strength sports. As for Apollon, I love that the question of how much he could've lifted is brought up. I'd also ask, with the right motivation and coaching - since he was regarded as somewhat lazy - how much could he have lifted?

Cyr was stronger, but trained to his potential. Apollon was larger and probably no where near maxing out his strength because there was really no reason to.

What's weird is nobody mentions the historical context of Apollon's "escape" routine. Loose guess he was evoking Les Miserables? Why else applaud a prisoner escaping?

Sure I respect them for the great fitness revolution they started and continue to inspire all of us but I think ppl should know their both sides not just their good side. Sandow(who claimed to backlift more than Cyr via doctored photographs refused to compete with Cyr ) and Hackkenshmidt (exposed using fake wieghts/incorrect wieghts by Sandow himself, escaped several wrestling matches against actual champions claiming to be injured or have flu).
