      @@anthonydeadman It seemed like it, and it's ridiculous. Like, of course he would have a thing for her, that's why he keeps kidnaping her. At the end of Sunshine, he said to Bowser Jr that he really wanted Peach to be his mother. That instantly tells you he has feelings for her.

      I also thought of that term - even though I don't use it often - to describe Bowser's final arc in the movie. As soon as he figured out that Peach would never marry him, he straight up breathes fire at her, breaking up their "relationship" in the progress. The Bowser I know wouldn't do that, even if she rejected him.
      I'm not saying this is a bad way to portray Bowser, in fact, I'd say that in the movie this take works really well, but if you were to ask my personal preference, then I would prefer if he acted more like Bowser in most of the Mario games.
      They certainly nailed his character with that musical number, I won't lie.

    The story was my main concern, especially since the movie moved at a natrual pace when the bros were in Brooklyn. Mario wants to prove his dad wrong, Luigi tags along because he looks up to him, they go to save Brooklyn from a flood, and then all of a sudden it's just "by by mushroom time let's-ago". The rest of the movie speedruns to the next plotpoint and a lot of the characters go underdeveloped. But overall it was still an entertaining movie.

    • @samuelhadjaissa5201
      @samuelhadjaissa5201 Před rokem

      I mean I agree that the story kind of speed runs a lot of the plot but I think there are some glimmers of intrigue in this story, Mario's narrative is that of self worth, always getting back up when he is pushed down and his father berates him for this ideals because it drags not only him but his brother down, and that kind of what happened when he got him and his brother into the mushroom kingdom, and to this is a strong story here, it just needed another hour to let things breathe

      Movies shouldn't strive to be what you expect (unless you expect a masterpiece) they should strive to blow you away with quality even if the concept is ridiculous.

    Gotta love how Alax questions why they always "sanitize" Mario... when he reviewed the original Mario movie a few weeks ago, which answers his question. but the thing is they were working with NINTENDO. they didnt have to research anything. the folks from nintendo who were on this movies staff know mario like the back of their hand, so this was almost second nature to them. the fanservice is everywhere yes, but aside from seeing luigi get kidnapped and peach getting some surprisingly interesting backstory, theres pretty much no new unique story concepts here that cant already be found in a mario game.

      @zjzr08 Před rokem +4

      @SlimGrim360 {SEMI-DEAD} I just hoped we had a better writer and maybe less focus to moments and more to arcs...I think Nintendo made a great job seeing how fleshed out the WORLD is but IMO the writers and directors only care about plain fun, which I hope there's more than that as Mario games already deliver that plain fun.

    • @sergiomonty
      @sergiomonty Před rokem +3

      @@slimgrim3607 That's debatable. Considering the lore proposed by the Donkey Kong games and Yoshi's Island, and Nintendo's general refusal to change some of their methods, I'd say the entire Brooklyn part was never intended to be part of the games. The Super Mario Bros Super Show theme is there... a song that influenced mostly American audiences when it came to the views on Mario. I'd say there were some strong bits of Illumination's influence in the final product. They probably listed the things they needed to make a somewhat consistent story (We know there's much of one, but at least the movie tries to make sense compared to the actual games) and Nintendo had to approve their needs (In fact there's the news that Nintendo had some early sketches for Mario's family and they were used for the final product).

  • @GuyWithNoNickName
    @GuyWithNoNickName Před rokem +25

    The bits in Brooklyn at the beginning and end are the core of the story, imo, not the Mushroom Kingdom.
    That was just to give Mario an adventure to test his tenacity and love for his brother.
    The whole movie is about “Never Giving Up” no matter how many times you get beat down and ridiculed, you get back up and never stop fighting, whether it be clearing an obstacle course, fighting a giant monkey, racing on a rainbow, or confronting a monster turtle, Mario did this every time.
    Even at the end when’s he’s bruised, beaten down and could barely move, being inspired by his own commercial and the sight of him and his brother together, he got back up and took on Bowser head on.
    It’s a simple message, but one that’s quintessentially Mario. They said they wanted it to be like a Mario game, where no matter how many times you lose in a level, as long as you don’t give up and keep practicing, you can eventually succeed and beat it. It’s all about Tenacity. That theme is brought up multiple throughout the movie from beginning to end, as well as the theme of Bravery. I thought it was a nice first movie message.
    I personally am glad we didn’t get some forced romantic subplot between Mario and Peach, let that grow in future sequels.
    The movie, imo, was a fine first movie. Like some first animated movies that just establish the world and characters with a more simple story. (Kung Fu Panda, How To Train Your Dragon to name examples) Just get the ball rolling. The sequel is where you really get more creative.
    This film had things that weren’t answered, but you can tell they’re more like breadcrumbs that could be explored further in the future. (Like I see Peach’s true origins as something like Po’s adoption in Kung Fu Panda. It was only hinted at, but wasn’t given much in the first film, it was even kinda treated as a subversive joke, but his adoption is actually what the sequel is all about.
    Something established, but expounded upon later, cause that’s not what the first film’s focus is.)
    Overall, there are parts that could’ve been improved, but I think it’s a real good start to get the foot in the door.

    Honestly, what this movie lacks, I see as a window of possibility for their next movie(s) and this was just to establish the basics of how things in this universe works. It works as a prologue to bigger things to come, and I'm especially glad they didn't go the usual Hollywood/Disney route of killing off the villain (Bowser) and instead kept him alive for future movies.

    I honestly think, the critics are right on this one. The movie is carried by the Mario franchise but without it, it wouldn't stand on it's feet. Why is it, that we put so much value on franchises and not the actual produkt? As a fan, there is nothing wrong enjoying it, but critics do not and should not write reviews based on personal attachments to a franchise. And people need to be more open minded to that way of thinking, because they should not see "bad reviews" as criticism to them self rather than, this movie is especially made for them as fans.

      When those critics give movies like Cuties an 87% score. Of course, I am going to question their reasoning specially considering they say things like, "the only bad illumination Movie" which is objectively and evidently not true. No one is right. The only one who is right is you with your own criteria. This is entertainment, objectivity does not exist. "Why is it that we put so much value on franchises than the actual product?" Geez wonder why this is not a difficult question buddy. The very same way Puss in Boots has the Shrek franchise attached to it and if it wasn't for that you wouldn't even know that movie exists despite how good it actually is.

      @@arminarlert7273 Yes, compared to other illumination Movies these reviews do not seem fair. But to other animation movies it is. That's kinda why you have to look at reviews in a vacuum. Just because (and I totally agree with you here) there are incredible bad reviews out there and comparing everything to each other makes no sense, does not mean, they have to be wrong all the time.
      Objectivity does exist, it's just not obtanable by one person, that's why we gather large amounts of reviews and opinions on the internet. Because we care, what other people think, about our favorite media. I can however agree on one thing. Giving "objective reviews" is impossible, because when people do this, they project, what other people might think about it, without knowing for certain.
      There are many successfull movies without a strong franchsie behind them. I just think it's harmfull to creative and dedicated studios, when consumers just buy every new product regardless of content. Look what happened to the Pokemon games.

      @arminarlert7273 Před rokem

      @@Gliscormolt Yes, I see what happened to the Pokemon games and as a result the president of the Pokemon Company has stepped down. Objectivity does exist yeah that's true but it exist within science. If something can be proven by the scientific method then yeah it is objective. But you can't do that with entertainment the scientific method does not work here. Because what is entertaining for you might not be entertainming for me there is no objectivity. And if we where to recollect reviews, then we would have to rely on numbers and the audience score has 10,000 + reviews compared to the 219 ish critic review. So by numbers alone the audience score would be more accurate. And again this is going by your logic and what you just said about recollecting reviews. Part of me views this movie as a proof of concept. I think that they made a basic and decent enough movie to see how people liked it or disliked it, and if people liked it enough, they might end up making movies for other nintendo franchises or more mario movies. The mario was a simple yet fun movie that pretty much did what it needed to for a first mario movie(not including you know what). It showed mario and luigi's origin story, introduced the characters and world, and that's what it went out to do. Now they have opportunities to expand on and branch out the characters of the mario series and the mushroom kingdom itself.

It feels like it was made for Mario fans and it was fun to see the characters on the big screen even if it wasn't as deep as other movies. Honestly I don't think every movie has to be deep to be good entertainment. It wasn't particularly relatable or a tear-jerker like some of the other movies I love, but sometimes I just want a fun silly movie about characters I like. I wouldn't compare the Mario movie to something like Puss in Boots or Encanto, because they fill different roles and are just different types of entertainment in my opinion. Similar to how I found the low stakes plot of Luca to be refreshing after seeing so many movies with huge conflicts, the simple and fun plot of the Mario movie was refreshing after seeing so many deep and emotional movies. I don't think an adult who is unfamiliar with Mario would enjoy this one, but I don't think they need to. It was amazing for the people it was made for, it was faithful to the source material, included elements from a range of Mario media instead of just the well-known stuff like I expected, and I enjoyed it so much I saw it twice lol. Would love to see a sequel. :)

      @@lauramenendez3212 Definitely should've been longer. Give Mario and Toad some scenes that actually flesh out Toad's motivations for helping Peach and explain why he suddenly just calls Mario his best friend. Give Luigi some scenes before the finale where he actually tries to face his fears. Maybe him and the Penguin King try to break out of captivity. I hated that the movie acted like Luigi had a character arc where he became brave because it never happened. Give Mario and DK a real bonding scene about of how their dads view them as disappointments and maybe have them decide that they're going to prove them wrong and show that they're competent. And lastly give Mario's dad and Mario a real resolution where he acknowledges his son isn't a loser and even compliments of how he never gives up.
