I could actually still sympathize with Nancy at this point in the film even though she killed her stepfather. He wasn't a very nice guy, as I remember it. Had Nancy simply been content with the resultant financial windfall and resolved to do good with her powers, things would've turned out a lot of better for her. But no.

@Camille McALoon Technically, she did commit a crime as it was a foul deed. However, law enforcement and the criminal court would be hard pressed to back up any charges. Black magic, unless it can be proven, is not evidence.

Shinobi Vega - It kinda makes sense, though. From the beginning, it foreshadowed what would happen to Nancy via her wish. She asked for “ALL of the powers of Manon” and then drank the rest of the cup, rather than an amount comparable to the other girls.
Nancy herself said that Manon is more like the _field_ upon which good and evil fight/play. Knowing that, a more careful person would not ask for all of Manon’s power, as that includes that evil. So now, the evil and the good were playing more extremely in Nancy, and her need to _exert_ control rather than just have it was the tipping point.

It all came down to karma. Nancy abused her power and the results were horrific. Nancy did not have to kill her stepfather because karma would have somehow taken care of him the same way it took care of Nancy.

The thing is, while Nancy did want power, she wanted a stable family just as much. In this scene, you can tell that she does love her mother when she goes over to her after the stepdad hit her .
The morning after she invoked Manon, she said, "I'm your daughter now." She wanted his power, yes, but she also wanted his love. Because, when you don't have a father (and a stepfather who is not interested in being a father) and you have to fill the void elsewhere, why not fill it with the best?
I think that's also why she reacted the way she did when Sarah began to question what they were doing and started to pull away. With a drunk mother and abusive stepfather, Nancy didn't have any family, other than her coven. Rochelle, Bonnie, and Sarah were her sisters (notice the blood-sister thing when they had their first ritual?) She didn't want to lose the power of the coven, but, she didn't want to lose the sisterhood, either.

You can film it from a closet if he’s abusing someone else.

Ah, that depends on your personal beliefs and ethics, and which tradition you follow, if any. Most Wiccans will say vengeful magic is strictly taboo, but most witches who aren't Wiccan would probably disagree. Sometimes it works well enough to cleanse and protect yourself, but I have banished and even hexed a few people in extreme circumstances, and I came out just fine.
