Nancy (Fairuza Balk) tries to force Sarah (Robin Tunney) to commit suicide and then Sarah does a spell that scares the other girls.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
After killing her mother in childbirth, growing up in San Francisco with her father and stepmother, attempting suicide, and moving to Los Angeles, Sarah (Robin Tunney) makes a brief stab at popularity at her new Catholic high school. Ostracized due to the untrue kiss-and-tell tales of football player Chris (Skeet Ulrich), Sarah reluctantly befriends a trio of self-styled outsiders: the horribly scarred Bonnie (Neve Campbell), the trailer-trash Nancy (Fairuza Balk), and Rochelle (Rachel True), a frequent victim of anti-black prejudice at the hands of Laura Lizzie (former Marcia Brady and future Mrs. Ben Stiller, Christine Taylor). After exhibiting latent telekenitic powers in front of Bonnie, Sarah learns that her three new friends have chosen her as their "fourth corner," the final member of their supernatural coven. Using tools stolen from a local incense-and-candle-filled boutique for practitioners of magic, the quartet summons the power of Manon, a primitive deity, to exact revenge on their tormentors and transform their lives. Drunk with power, they watch their spells get out of control, and the new coven soon realizes that with magic, "whatever you give comes back three-fold." This mid-'90s horror flick scored first place at the box office its opening weekend despite its then-unknown cast and modest budget. I've never understood people disliking Sarah, she has all the morals and respect of a true witch. She never abused her power, never intentionally hurt others. The worst she's done was mess with free will (Chris's love spell)

What I like about this movie is it's so raw. The only reason Nancy is so evil is because she is reflecting all the hate and anger she feels towards herself towards other people, which is something that people often do in real life. When she says, "You're pathetic!" or "You're a coward!" she is really talking about herself, about how she can't change her mother's bad habits or escape their boyfriends. I grew up with a lot of people who were the same.

I felt a little sorry for Nancy until she became drunk on power when she allowed herself to be possessed, and it drove her batshit insane.

The movie was kinda to show how people change when they get power,revenge,money
they got hooked on the power and Nancy turned their friendship into them 'owing her' for being their friend. Sarah, maybe because she has a bit more common sense or maybe because she was a natural born witch, or even just because she listened to the older witch from the store, realised that they were starting to go too far.
Kinda like real life sadly, people who you thought were your friends can suddenly turn on you, it sucks

Even the girls knew that from the beginning thats why they wanted her to join them then once they got their own powers they turned on her and thought she was weak bc she refused to use her powers but once she did she scared the shit out of those girls...once those 2 girls ran out after going to check up on Sarah from upstairs Nancy knew she was up for something big lol
Sarah is a Natural Witch: meaning she has natural powers without the help of spells. Nancy, Bonnie, and Rochelle are Spiritual Witches: meaning they have to practice the craft in order to gain magic. Once Sarah joined the coven, Nancy, Bonnie, and Rochelle were capable of leeching off of her magic which allowed them to possess their own powers. Until Nancy uses the powers of Manon, which has nothing to do with Sarah, and 'causes her to get corrupted.

Sarah was insecure about her magic ability and found acceptance in that trio. Rochell and Bonnie are also insecure about themselves, but about her appearance and looks. Nancy apparently shows security, but it's only a facade she creates as a way to defend herself from her stepfather or anyone who she thinks can hurt her. By the time Sarah realizes the consequences of their doings, Nancy saw her as a threat and tried to use the control of acceptance to humiliate Sarah. Watch in this scene how Nancy's words "you're so disgusting", "You're so pathetic" affect Sarah. Until she realizes her own strength and value, that's when her power really reveals. Sarah says "Make them see", to make them see what they really see in themselves.

Apparently they tried type-casting her, and she didn't enjoy that, so, she decided not to pursue many gigs after this movie.
I wonder how much of this scene was scripted, Fairuza balk goes 200% with the acting

Fairuza Balk is gorgeous, I love her every emotion, her voice and her craziness!
I feel sorry for Nancy, cause technically she was just a toy in hands of Manon, she played role of an evil witch to wake up sleeping powers of Sarah. After that - she was just thrown as boring doll, who executed her purpose.
Despite that, I understand why that happened to her. She asked for something she could not take, no one can take properly if it's not your destiny initially.
And what about exactly that scene - it concerns many others people, not only magicians and witches. It's showing how much pain and fear sometimes you need to take to open up your true nature and capabilities. Not less than total despair and fear cause your transformation.

You can kind of tell that Nancy is just scared for herself and wants to keep wielding magic against whoever because she identified with the power and the control she had temporarily.
And you can kind of tell that the power after going to Nancy’s head is dwindling because sarah is dying.
They just don’t understand the flow of energy coming from sarahs bloodline.
Dorothy Gale, after leaving OZ countless times, and having to deal with more wicked witches of every direction, she secretly decided to become a witch herself, lmao. Fairuza Balk was very convincing in this movie.

I think Bonnie had the most to gain from being friends with Sarah. She didn't just heal her physically but psychologically as well.
Each of the girls is a metaphor for everyday issues;
Sarah - self-acceptance
Bonnie - body issues
Rochelle - race
Nancy - self loathing and disempowerment

Sarah was the one who put the infatuation spell on him. If she doesn't do that spell then Chris never acts the way he did that night in order to send Sarah back tot he house in distress and provoke Nancy to confront Chris.

After she invoked the spirit, she became so corrupted with power that it made her extremely volatile and unpredictable. It would have only been a matter of time until she targeted him to exact her revenge, with or without the love spell.

It’s funny cause Sara was a natural witch and obviously pretty powerful, when she joined their coven Nancy, Bonnie and Rochelle pretty much leeched off Sara’s powers and turned on her because they thought she was weak and that stopped once Nancy got Manon’s until Sara who was granted his power as well without a sacrifice or anything like she became far more powerful then the coven. As she no longer fears her magic hence why Manon probably chose her to inherit his powers more so then Nancy as I feel Nancy more so stole them.
This movie should have definitely gotten a sequel, at least from my standpoint about how damn good this movie is
It got a whole series called "Charmed".
They came out with one called the craft legacy in 2020 which features a new cast of characters but I haven’t see it yet the movie doesn’t look all that good to me but I’m gonna have to check it out and see if it’s worth seeing or not

I read that Robin Tunney really wanted the part of Bonnie but the crew knew they wanted her to play the lead role of Sarah after seeing her table reads to assist other actresses when they auditioned. Angelina Jolie, Scarlett Johansson and Alicia Silverstone all auditioned for the role of Sarah too.
Also, Holly Marie Combs was offered a role but she couldn’t take it at the time. Oh and the role of Rochelle was supposed to be a Caucasian girl that suffered from bullimia.

Don’t mess with the girl
This is one of those movies where you're really more interested in the villain than the heroine.
A sneak peek prequel to this masterpiece just came out and everyone has their own opionion. This is an uncommon one, but have you ever wondered if Sarah's mom is a pure blooded witch and somehow there is no backstory to it. The movie didn't even mentioned it. Yet it needed something more. We know Sarah's magick is more powerful than the others, but it needs to have a backstory on her mom and Sarah's childhood. I hope they show it. I have high hopes for the prequel. I love the original movie. Btw Nancy is my favorite.
They say so in the movie. The woman from the magic shop tells Sara, about her mom, "She was a witch too, of course. Didn't you know?" Then when Sarah is dying but afraid to invoke the spirit, her mother's photo comes to life and tells her to invoke him.

I watched this movie last year and weirdly just stumbled across this clip. Brilliant movie. However one thing I didnt get was how nasty the two other girls became to Sarah. Its quite clear Nancy has developed some form of mental illness/instability at this point, but Sarah was always chill with the other two girls; yet for some reason they just became so cruel to her. Maybe its just showing how manipulative Nancy was I guess? But that uncertainty doesn't hinder the film, I still think its so underrated.
