    "Do they test their games?" Oblivion has like eighty different mods dedicated to fixing bugs and improving the game's stability. But, it's a classic for a reason. Memes withstanding, it's a game you can sink hundreds of hours into but still find new and fun/funny stuff, even with only the base game and no DLC or mods.
    Edit: All of the above is applicable to Skyrim as well. (:

    • @bioboygamer
      @bioboygamer Před rokem +12

      Yeah, there have been complaints that the devs basically outsource bug fixing and polish to the community rather than spend more time and money creating a quality product. Though at the same time there’s always a certain level of jank that’s usually expected from games that attempt to cram in as much content as these. I would honestly argue that Breath of the Wild was one of the first major games to prove that a large-scale open-world game can be more stable and functional than people expect - and I suspect a big part of that is limiting the breadth of potential interactions with NPCs. Just by refraining from having NPCs be affected by physics in the same way as other objects, and removing the possibility of established NPCs actually dying or existing outside the circumstances they were designed for, you cut down on a lot of the weirdness that would otherwise affect the stability of the game experience.

    • @AngrySunTheory
      @AngrySunTheory Před rokem +1

      Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall was the worst by far. Almost impossible to complete the main quest without save hacking. So yeah, Bethesda and poor QA testing have gone hand in hand for a while now.
      Part of it's the developer, and part of it is the simple fact that if it's an open world game that you can sink hundreds of hours into, it would take thousands of hours to QA test properly. Game developers either don't have the resources to do that, or are unwilling to spend the time and money on such a long testing phase. Especially if you have a dedicated modding community and you know they will fix your game for you.

    • @TheFoolsArcana
      @TheFoolsArcana Před rokem

      @@bioboygamer yeah breath of the wild is a great game but it's less ambitious and more reasonable in what it tries to achieve. You don't have 100s of npc walking around the world that are affected by physics and quests.

      They basically add to the engine over time, rather than re-develop it for each game. This will cause a LOT of bugs that are hard to deal with on the development side.
      But on the other hand, Bethesda holds 6 of the 10 most replayable and modabble games released this century, so there is that...

    Hey everyone I thought I’d expand a little bit on why some bugs may still be there after QA Testing. QA’s job is to find errors in code and bugs in the game etc. (it’s more than that but that’s the jist) That’s their job, they then report these issues to the devs or more likely the team lead. It’s up to the management to decide if fixing an issue is within the scope of the development time, budget etc. Like if a bug doesn’t break anything and is just a little silly, they might leave that for a post release patch. Remember your favourite glitchy messes were tested, the fixes were either not found or implemented. :)

    There are reports that Oblivion's AI was dumbed down on purpose since otherwise it could overcomplicate certain situations.
    Quoting from an article, "The developers learned the wrong way that having NPCs with unique desires can result in some awesomely unpredictable events, yes, but it mostly results in NPCs going on a murderous rampage in the search for other NPCs who have booze in their inventory. As soon as the game begins, not just the NPCs in our line of sight, but the NPCs from all around the world would begin either murdering each other or committing petty crimes that would end up getting them killed by the accidentally realistic police. Different people will give you different reasons why Oblivion and Skyrim are... like that. Some will blame developer laziness, others will say overambition, and some just think it’s part of the game’s charm. Ultimately I think what you tend to see in these clips and videos is the result of having a very expansive world and a lot of potential interactions, with less care put into polishing them. Why spend time making one thing work right when you could use that time to add ten other things that will sometimes work? The difference in scale between the game and some of its resources can exaggerate things, too - having every character in a massive open-world game be voice acted means that you’re going to hear a LOT of reused dialogue. Overall I’d say that they’re far too ambitious in what they promise compared to what they can deliver. A lot of weird behaviour can be the result of systems that exist in order to make the game appear less shallow than it is. But that’s just my view, I guess.

    17:44 For what it's worth, that's actually one of the most-interesting things to me about TES nowadays. For years and years, Bethesda was pretty much *the* company doing open-world RPGs/adventures/etc in that style. There were bugs, some funny, some gamebreaking, but the games (at the time) always occupied that sort of middle-ground between "polished" and "broken Sonic 06 stereotype". And since "open-world" games hadn't really come into vogue yet, there weren't a lot of comparisons to make (as far as I'm aware, anyway).
    In a post-BOTW world, though, you can't go two steps without seeing an open-world game inspired or following after it, and even when you ignore the glitches, Bethesda's older titles look downright antiquated. Hell, I'd argue that the series' appeal nowadays is more about the "western RPG" parts, rather than the "open-world" part. BOTW was so genre-defining that it knocked TES into a whole different category, so to speak. And *now* we're living in a post-Tears world. It's fascinating stuff!
