Phil Collins Shares the Real Story Behind "In the Air Tonight"
/ fallontonight - Komedie
For God sake let the man talk Fallon.
Maria Merry3 Can't stand Jimmy. I bet he's a lovely man, but he can't interview.
Mathias Bangsgaard He really is terrible at interviews... the monologue and games are the only good parts. His rival Kimmel is a natural at interviews tho.. way funnier imo
+Mathias Bangsgaard you, sir, are on the wrong channel.
Janinho897 Yeah. I know. Can't help comment on it though. People need to understand.
Yup, it's what I can't stand about Fallon. All his interview are him just fawning over the guests, trying to get as far up their backsides as possible. Worst is when he does impressions of his guests TO his guests.
Phil Collins *Tries To* Share the Real Story Behind "In the Air Tonight"
:") :D
Poor Jimmy.. he's charming and funny.. but bumbling and high strung.. an odd combination for talk show host.
Man poor jimmy :(
little jimmy.., awww
I know! What’s the story?!!!
Looks like Phil never skips arm day.
He's a drummer
@@Edsonsaurio can drummers have big arms just by drumming?
@@yvng4697 Usually, yes.
@@onepalproductions wow thanks i never knew lol
@@yvng4697 Nope. It is not that physical to the arms, unless you do something wrong. It's forearm, fingers, tendons (yes, tendonitis) and so on. It develops calves muscles quite well.
"By the time the end of the program comes, you'll be good at this." Burn! 🔥
But I think he thought Phil meant the drumming 😧🤦😁
love Phil LOL
I’m confused how that was a burn
Hahahaha
@@kenzielynn1047 Then you are the PERFECT person to watch Jimmy Fallon.
All I know is that this Legend made the best Disney soundtrack ever.
Belen Morales 2 soundtracks
And played in one of the best bands ever. I mean, you can't deny a band is great when it spawns 3-4 excellent and well known singers. Mike Rutherford from Mike and the mechanics, Peter Gabriel and Phil himself are the ones I know of, think I mighta heard of one more..
I remember listening to Phil in the car with a friend, and my friend turns to me and says, "Are you listening to Disney music???" No, it's just Phil Collins dude
He's well worth hearing his other albums and songs. I can +100% confident, 'Millenial'. pfff, lol...
same
This man is a legend. No matter how old he gets the quality of his music never dies.
I LOVE the gentle rebuke from Collins, "by the end of the program, you'll be good at this"--not the drumming, your interviewing Jimmy
Fallon’s interview skills are terrible...he constantly cuts his guests off or talks over them.
Mr. Barnes Fallon is a jerk like the rest of today’s late night hosts!!!
I love him
Fallon is AWFUL
How is it terrible?? He always seems interested with his guests by asking follow up questions
Jimmy kicks ass. Love this guy!
phil collins sounds like he's the nicest guy in the world.
Yeh, lots of ppl have said that over the years
sure he is... 3 ex wives
Jeff Pergram Well maybe it chould be the wifes?
And an amazing pot head. I smoked once with him and Cheech
Funny as hell..
Saw him in concert
Phil Collins is popin' his collar like it is 2003!
Robert Mechling DEAD hahahahahahahaha
it will live forever man !
1984, more like, you young whippersnapper.
It's Phill Collins, he can wear his polo as he wants :D
Hes doing the Eric Cantona... and he pulls it off perfectly :D
In the Air Tonight is still a good song to listen to, in 2024. Amen.
Phil Collins forever! Even his talking voice is pure music!
only Phil Collins can still get away with the popped up collar
Nathan Sifuentez I can
Nathan Sifuentez I definitely can.
And Dracula
He earned it.
back in the day we used to wear two polo shirts at the same time to show off but we were poor as church mice, so it was all for show
I love the fact that Jimmy tells a story and afterwards says "That is the best story i have ever heard in my life"
Budger He's a terrible interviewer.. Why do he have this job?
+Mathias Bangsgaard it's his entertainment skills...horrible interviewer but an excellent entertainer. none of the other late night shows hosts are as physically involved in entertaining as him. and unfortunately, thats what grabs attention. all of his game segments have views in the millions. so why would the channel bosses kill their cash cow?
I've been wondering the same thing myself and I guess that's the reason-he's really a horrible interviewer. He always tells the story and never lets his guests talk.
slightly late, but that story he told is actually something that a lot of people were saying, you can tell that Phil has heard it a lot as he's chipping in
Makes me think of The Simpsons - "That's too funny! I can't remember when I've heard a funnier anecdote! Okay, now you tell one."
“I only went through a handful of your singles”, you can really tell jimmy is totally qualified to interview Phill Collins
I get a strong feeling Jimmy was expecting an applause for his air drumming, but failed.
only Phil Collins can still get away with the popped up collar
such a class act. True legend
Fallon is a jerk like the rest of today’s late night hosts!!!
and Eric Catona!
such a class act. True legend
I know.....i cant understand why sometimes he seems so under the radar...the American Idol producers never invite him as a coach...always make me wonder why??? Not even his songs were sing!!!! to me he is the best ever!!!!!
100% correct sir
yeah Jimmy is great
+lars ulrich you jelly lars?
Hey Lars, does your kid play drums better than you? Wait, he's been a better drummer since age 5.
You know that one song in the air tonight by Phil Collins where Phil could have saved that one man from drowning? But didn't
Joe Aguilar and Phil saw it all and at a show he found him, that's kind of how this is
you coulda rescued me from drowning
the song is about divorce, he's sing to his ex and her new man.
Try to copy paste the 3 of us wrote down on google, then come back here...
And all I wanted was a lousy letter or a call.
"That's the best story I've heard" LOL You didn't even let him tell the story
24 here. Still blasting Phil Collins in my 80’s playlist~
I only clicked on this for Phil Collins. Otherwise, listening to Fallon is what they would make me do during CIA interrogations.
I was searching for the meaning of the song. I wish I'd just gone on to Wiki.
Right 😂😂😂
hahahaha #Truetho'
Or Hell.
Yes... Thank you Mark...me too... Fallon is a douche...I haven't watched his "show" since President Trump was sworn in
I get a strong feeling Jimmy was expecting an applause for his air drumming, but failed.
Whew man. That was brutal to watch...
He was air drumming and he STILL fucked it up. Totally wrong.
Fallon is a jerk like the rest of today’s late night hosts!!!
I thought the same thing! I yelled at my screen for him to shut the hell up . . ..
@@hardlines4 Conan O'Brien is a jerk, but he's a self-admitted, and a funny jerk at that!
Legend has it he can still feel it in the air tonight in 2022
Bow down to his Majesty 🙏 will always be a phenom
If I could only have the chance to thank this man for all that he has given me through his music... very few artists make me feel so deeply with their songs as this man, along with Mr. Gabriel have. I’m only 26 yo but Genesis, Phil and Peter are everything to me, musically. Thank you Phil, from the bottom of my heart.
I Agree with you.......but I Absolutely Adore/Love his/Genesis song ""That's All....." for me those words Say It All.

Phil is a legend, always have, will always be. Amazing career, amazing songs for decades.
Just saw him last night. One of the best concerts ever and his son was absolutely amazing!
Ya, me too! He seriously is the best drummer out there!
Another Day in Paradise is what stands it with this BEAUTIFUL SOUL.. 💋💋
My dad is a huge fan of Genesis, so Phil is a big part of my childhood. Love him and his music, both Genesis and solo stuff.
same, its just timeless ❤
He is the reason I play drums
same my mom is the biggest fan ever i just saw him live for the 2nd time last night lol otherwise i might not even known who he was
Same! My Dad is a big fan of him, so I also heard Genesis and his solo stuff growing up.
@@AngeSim221 all my family are Big fan .he reminds me best memories
1:35 I think that went over Jimmy's head. Phil basically just said that Jimmy was a shit host. He's right. He's very right.

I love when you Come back i remember
that tempo in that music is to die for.
Come in Canada 2025??
Watched this for the 13th time, I still don’t hear where he shares the story behind *IN THE AIR TONIGHT*
There's no story. It's a song inspired by his divorce. He references his anger at the situation and that makes sense with the drums. Some of the lyrics hint at it as well, "So, wipe off the smile. I know where you've been. It's all been a pack of lies" probably referencing a cheating wife also.
I got stabbed by my wife guys I would make in the air tonight too keep your head up mr Collins
@@Uzodesign yes she was cheating and yes that is a better sadder story than the stupid drowning urban legend his first wife not Oriane although she did leave him again the heifer
He said he has no idea what its about it came spontaneously but its the pain of his divorce that brought on the song yes Jimmy never shuts up LOl
I totally love this man I can't imagine my life without his music
Phil being unable to play drums anymore is one of popular music's greatest tragedies.
His wife cheated on him.
He wrote a timeless hit song.
I bet she's still collecting half the royalties.
Wilfredo same with some man.
@@sandraseven6575 yes,but woman are recipients of all investment just buy virtue of being female, thats the difference.

At last a real artist ! :)
YES Finally someone we can TRULY relate to!!

I KNOW PHIL ISN'T IN THE GREATEST OF HEALTH AS OF 4-7-22,SO I WANT TO GIVE HIM HIS FLOWERS BEFORE WE BOTH DIE.YOU ONE OF THE BEST TO DO THIS MUSIC THING AND I'M SO GLAD FOR YOUR MUSIC MY FELLOW OLD SKOOLER.
i love how jimmy says "London, Paris,... Germany" Like Germany has no major cities worth mentioning^^
Eddie Phoenix like Brunsbüttel or Höckel or Horsten, maybe even Bömifhausen!
Stuckenborstel or Gifhorn
Bielefeld, obviously :D
heyooooo..da guckt jemand Gronkh :D
Na-türlich! :D aber noch ned so lange.
Phil acutally wrote the music in his studio as demo, let his produicer hear it thinking it would be re recorded, it wasnt, phils home recording is what u hear on the song
There is not many instances where the demo becomes the released recording for an album. The only other one off the top of my head is Bruce Springsteen's 'Nebraska'
According to Phil, he played it for Genesis for their album called "Duke", but Tony Banks recalls Phil never played it. Regardless, it is an awesome song.
@@MusicMasterTasmania Roxane by The Police...
@@MrLarsDF never knew that! Cheers!
Pumped Up Kicks is also another demo that was released as a final version.
Phil Collins is one of the best to have ever done it. Absolute talent. After going through my own divorce many years ago. I understand completely what "in the air of the night " is about. One of Phil's many hits. Undenable classic.
Ma man Phill Collins the legend. Is right on my top 5 80s artists.
Sir Phil Collins, not only a great musician but also a humorist !!!
This man has inspired me since Elementary School (in the early to mid eighties).
Daniel Marquis yes, Fallon is amazing....
Classic song Calling in the air tonight forever will live on forever!!💯💯💎😁
Phil Collins is my hero ❤️
Like many others I love Phil and always will. It hurts a bit to see that he has become so old in a relative short period. O well, that's life I guess. I listen to (old) Genesis stuff a lot (Supper's Ready, Musical Box, Los Endos and so on) and it still amazes me what a freakin' good drummer he was.
Same here.
Realizing Phil is so old now makes me feel very old myself :)
Tjoppy thought the same! I love Phil Collins since I can talk and seeing him becoming older is like seeing my dad becoming older again. It hurts in a way.
Tjoppy Aw! My fam! I was the only pre-teen in existence jamming to Phil and old Genesis. I have so many adorable fangirl stories. I had it BAD. I still have almost all the vinyls... Get 'em out by Friday! Don't mind us all getting old.
Yeah, he has aged. I did read that he has had several back surgeries to repair a spinal cord problem from all the years of drumming. He's also had a host of other medical issues/complications that have caught up with him. I'm surprised he's actually touring.
you'd "become so old in a relative short period" too if you owed your wife $25M from the divorce! poor Phil :(
probably one of the few identifiable drum riffs ever. Amazing.
Still as beautiful as ever, what a legend sir phil Collins
I could listen to his (Phil Collins) interviews for a full day.

Thanks the legendary Phil Collins, and Genesis. Literally my favourite. 👑
I adore Phil Collins . 🎶
Thanks God for Phil Collins❤️
Phill Collins, I love you so much my favorite singer, GOD BLESS YOU ALWAYS.
London, Paris, Germany - all cities you should have been in lifetime.
The famous city of "Germany" 😂
LOL
Well in England most concerts are in London, in France most concerts are in Paris, in Germany concerts are all over the place.
Fair enough : )
A city so large they only had room for one of them in the entire country!
I got to see him in Dublin, his 16 year old, nailed it. He played some Genesis songs, too! I was in heaven. My husband bought tickets to see them 2 years ago and it had to be canceled bc of f’ing COVID. Seeing Genesis, play “Supper’s Ready” live was high on my bucket list. I doubt I will ever see them, together, again. But, their music got me through some really sad times. Their music will, forever, take me to another place. It is just poetry. I love Phill Collins!!! He can do no wrong ❤

That man and the band got me through high school and he's still one of my all time favorite drummers.
I just had a Genesis moment.!
You know theres a little known fact about Phil Collins.....he once had a knock at his door and a fella who lived local (just a normal fella ) was standing in his doorway and told phil his family were getting evicted from their home unless he could raise enough money pay his debtors and when he explained the situation Phil Collins took his cheque book and wrote a cheque for the gentleman for the full amount needed. He thought at the time he would never see the cash again and some months later he got another knock at his door and it was a very grateful gentleman paying him back the full amount as promised. He is truly a great man.
I saw that interview too. Great testimony to Phil's character.
That dude is one of the best singers period!
You know the song by Phil Collins, "In the Air of the Night"
About that guy who could a saved that other guy from drowning
But didn't, then Phil saw it all, then at a a show he found him?
That's kinda how this is, you could a rescued me from drowning
Now it's too late, I'm on a thousand downers now, I'm drowsy
And all I wanted was a lousy letter or a call
I hope you know I ripped all of your pictures off the wall
I love you Slim, we coulda been together, think about it
You ruined it now, I hope you can't sleep and you dream about it
And when you dream I hope you can't sleep and you scream about it
I hope your conscience eats at you and you can't breathe without me
Ps: O shit, that was you
@Choke And Bite It's not necessarily untrue. That story has been floating around for ages, yes. Now, think this scenario: Phil writes angry song accusing someone of letting a mutual friend die. Phil acknowledges the story. The media quickly identifies who the people were. The accused man sues Phil's eyeballs off for slander and the entire proceeds that song has generated in 40 years evaporates overnight. There is no way, if the old story is true, that Phil could ever acknowledge it. The only thing he could do is to float a rumour in private but officially deny it in public. If it's true Phil publicly denies it. If it's false he publicly denies it. There's no way to no, and this interview really tells us nothing.
@@jsullivan2112 Wouldn't that actually be libel (in print), not slander?
Blaze Infernus Slander is transient / libel is when it’s broadcast or published so it would depend on the exact circumstances but for it to be defamation (slander or libel) it would have to be false and the guy’s reputation would need to have been damaged in some significant way meaning he would need to have been identified (at least) to some of his friends/family/colleagues.
However in the US if the guy sued it would be up to Phil Collins to prove it was true and without a successful prosecution or very compelling evidence that would be next to impossible. If this whole story were true, identifying the guy publicly would be a dumb move, especially if it happened in the US.
In the UK it would be up to the person being defamed to prove the harm etc (one reason British newspapers get away with so much shit) and the whole story becomes slightly more plausible. But then I’d want to know how he witnessed all that without being able to step in himself!
Phil Collins is a legend love him and in the air tonight is one of my favs by him oh who am I kidding all of his songs are the best takes me back to my teenage years genesis I own all the album's and he sounds just as amazing now as he did back then

If you think he's cutting people off you should talk to more contractors or timeshare salespeople. Fallon has very good conversation skills, I'm not seeing an abundance of interrupting or anything. Like, shit on him for his laughing that breaks character or something valid, but I really think he's too much of an empath to be a serial interrupter.
