How "Days Gone Bye" Was the Perfect Pilot for The Walking Dead

  • While we’re waiting on the last few episodes of TWD to hit our screens, it’s hard not to imagine all the great highlights and moments that we’ve seen over the years. I’ve covered a few episodes that I consider to be highlights, and there’s a lot more to come, but given that we’re almost to the final ever episode of the Walkling Dead, I think it’s only fitting that we take a look back at the episode that started it all, Days Gone Bye.

    To introduce us to the apocalypse through the POV of Rick whose missed the beginning of it due to being in a coma was a genius decision. Help keep the show 'realistic' if that makes sense in a zombie apocalypse, as no long-winded introduction to what caused the apocalypse was needed, Rick was learning about the rules of the world at the same time as us, great pilot episode.

    • @Zeroshiki
      @Zeroshiki Před 10 měsíci +5

      The main series definitely started off perfectly with Rick's perspective, throwing us into the world and learning about it along with him. This choice is actually why I enjoy the first few seasons of Fear so much, too. I always wanted to see the show's take on the beginning of the apocalypse, like we got with the Telltale game (which got me into the series itself), and I think Fear does that fairly well.

      It is a good idea. But they quite literally stole it 100% from "28 Days Later" where the main character has the exact same experience. Both are flawless enactments of the idea though and I love them both.

      That’s what lots of people think about it, but to me, I feel like if they were decaying in a way that they couldn’t move as fast later, they’d all die within a few years, because their flesh would rot off and they can’t just be skulls (except for later on which makes no sense but ok)

    It's crazy to look back at the early seasons and see how great they were. Contrary to popular belief, season 2 is actually one of the better ones. I grew up on this show and have a weird nostalgia for it, even though I was way too young at 8 to be watching it. My dad always let me watch it and my mom would always get mad at him for it. For me it's genuinely the best episode of the whole series. Especially the first moments after Rick wakes up and sees what the world has become and how well he potrayed the shock and confusion. I think the scene where Shane and Rick are having lunch in the car is very telling. They're having burgers and fries when Shane dips his fries into the ketchup on Rick's burger. To me, its a clear signal that Shane already covetted Lori. He has his own life, a professed attitude towards women, and his own ketchup, but he reaches for Rick's. I havent seen it yet, but apparently, in a later season, their meal turns to dust in one of Rick's nightmarish flashbacks because Lori, and the ideal domestic family life she represented to Shane, has been long gone.
    I like that the show keeps Rick and Lori's pre-apocalypse marital problems deliciously vague. We don't know for sure whether Shane and Lori were messing around before Rick was presumed dead, but I think Shane definitely wanted what Rick had in Lori before the apocalypse.

    Yes, we all know they later tried to give a lame explanation of how Rick survived alone in a coma so long but it was just plain ridiculous. And that is evidence of how brilliant this episode was. We're forgiving because Lincoln makes us feel how confused and disoriented it would be to wake up in that world. Morgan explaining to Rick what happened felt real rather than a checklist description. The acting and emotions were spot on. Season 1 and 2 worked because there wasn't just conflict with outsiders (there weren't any) or because of fear of walkers, but there was conflict in the personalities in the group. As well as love and compassion and every other emotion.

    I heard him say “Deacon St. John” and I’m like, what’s he doing here? Then I look over to see Sam witwer. I had no clue that was him until he made that reference LMAO

    I've been binging this channel and it scratches that nostalgic itch while hitting on details and themes i don't always notice. I hope you cover some fearTWD as well at some point, i cant speak for later seasons but i finished the first 4 and they have a lot to unpack and some pretty great characters!!

    Yes I remember watching this premier as a OG zombie fan since night of the living dead. It was so good & I was so hooked wish they did more with Morgan on TWD tho cause I don’t watch fear or the other one. It also perfectly showed Rick & Shane’s relationship & gave us a glimpse into Rick & Lori’s marriage & she’s always been a problem.

    Hey I just went and looked and didn’t find one but I think a summary on the new world or the distance. I personally enjoy it it’s when they first meet new friendly people and I just think a video on how the group met with Arron would be good.
