Super 8: A Masterpiece For The Wrong Generation
Subscribe to help me reach 200K!
So that brings me, ultimately, to what this video is actually about. The movie that I consider to be JJ Abrams Magnum Opus, the 2011 mystery film: Super 8. Super 8 has everything that works in stories like Stranger Things or The Goonies and also capitalizes on The mystery box style of storytelling that so many people, JJ included, so often get wrong. The film itself borrows elements from many Spielberg films, other films that I’ve mentioned, and draws personal inspiration from JJ Abrams childhood.

The prequels had its merits and its mistakes. Abusive CGI in the movies, bad actor directing (the weakest aspect in Lucas) and some cringe dialogues were its main problems. But the argument was solid, except perhaps for The Phantom Menace, thy story was in contradiction with dialogues from previous movies. The casting choices were fantastic and the further development in TV series did even a better job. I agree Anakin's fall was rushed in the third movie, especially considering that The Clone War series didn't exist then. The prequels, as its predecessors, were planned and conceived to serve its story. George Lucas was not a good actor's director, but a genius at storytelling. Unfortunately the sequel movies lack unity and good storytelling. . Oh, and I disagree that Star Wars fans have issues with female characters. They have issues with badly written characters. Leia and Mon Mothma, from the movies, were never in question.Mara Jade was a fan favorite from the U.E. Ashoka was unbearable in The Clone Wars movie, but after some working on her, became a fan favorite. Ventress was well received since the Tartarosky animation from the early 2000s. The critics against Padmé are all related to poor dialogues, the same I've seen concerning Anakin in the movies. And more recently people really enjoyed Cara Dune and didn't question Omega. The problem with the female characters badly received is not the fact they were women. The problem is that they were poorly developed or used as platform for woke indoctrination, and fans perceived it.

Ill always be impressed how a $20M budget movie managed to pull out so much practical effect and so many figurants, lots of movies with a budget 5-10x bigger fail to achieve such spectacular scenes, the only comparable movie in term of figuration would be War of the worlds with a budget of $132M. the main story is kind of meh but the backstory on how the army tried to handle the situation, got overrunned, tried to switch to plan B, failing again, switching to plan C and nuke the whole place probably out of panic (they switched from trying to save the local population to Kill everyone and nuke the place in 24H) and the grim end.... one of a kind movie IMO.

The guy says to the sherif 'look, we lost a plane what do you want me to say?' The way he trests this like a small chemical leak rather than the destruction of an entire community is harrowing.

What I ESPECIALLY love about this movie is how plausible it all is (the Main Characters surviving everything notwithstanding…) The USA had chemical weapons for a good long while, and up until 2023 was actively in the process of destroying them. (Good for history class memorization “chemical weapons free by 2023”) Anyways *before* they were all at a few plants being disassembled and destroyed, they were at all sorts of ammo dumps all over the place and had to be moved to those sites. It is REALLY an interesting rabbit hole, but the movement of all of these was quite controversial and tense. Then for additional backround you have the concept of “Broken Arrow” (ie when Nuclear Weapons fell out of a plane/the plane crashed). No detonation as Nuclear Weapons are designed to be hard to detonate, BUT radioactive contamination+usual cleanup (with secrecy if i remember correctly, although nothing horrible) Also there are different types of chemical weapons. Most people think of your Chlorine or Phosgene Gas, Your Blister Agents (Mustard Gas), Nerve Agents (Sarin, VX, Novichock) etc, *BUT* “Incapacitating Agents” which were essentially super-LSD. The rounds would burst and a single droplet of the stuff gets on your skin and you have a bad trip for a day. Luckily nothing of the sort shown in this movie was developed, nor did this type of incident occur, but it is not *that* outlandish to think of. So short of the usual People Magically Escaping, “Government Bad”, and using Nukes for stuff like this tropes, this was one of my favorite movies. I hope these bits of context were interesting and SERIOUSLY read up on all of it, it’s a very interesting and under-remembered part of history.

As others have pointed, the premise isn't great once you get past the initial shock. It really doesn't make sense and takes so much suspension of disbelief. It makes no sense that the military wouldn't wipe out the creatures in a few weeks, considering how easily they are killed in the first and second film but "ordinary" citizens. There's no way the military wouldn't discover and exploit their sonic weakness immediately. I mean you could blast music and lead it on a trail to a volcano, and all of the creatures would jump into the volcano. Or just play audio loudly in the air off an aerial vehicle, to pull all the creatures towards a location where the military could use a nuclear bomb. The creatures seem to ignore constant noises, such as waterfalls. So it makes no sense to not just live near areas of constant noise pollution.

This movie isnt talked about enough and I think its because it had conspiracy imagery and theories tied to it, mainly theres the Chemtrail references and the FEMA Camp part where the citizens are rounded up. And the plot implying the Govrnment was let the Virus out on purpose with the Drone camera shots There was a movie called Grey state that was going to show a New World Order civil war with FEMA Camps back in 2013 and the director and his whole family got suicided before it finished. This is a movie I never see on TV or Streaming sites because of how the Government was depicted

The whole concept of the Rage virus turning people instantly into insane blood thirsty zombies after being bitten is genuinely terrifying and fascinating. The world would look like a rough, messy and patchy facsimile of what it once was and I think the rough and ready digital film and editing adds to the notion of an uncertain and apocalyptic future. 28 Days Later was a seminal film, as was the second film 28 Weeks Later. I hope the third and final instalment delivers and we hopefully get a chance to meet the survivors of the first two films.
