Overlord: The Most Underrated "Zombie" Film?

A few years ago I came across a movie that was set during WW2, but it was a horror movie with zombies. I had heard about this movie beforehand, watched the trailer and thought “Well, that’s not gonna be any good.” and I had already been incredibly disappointed because this movie was at one point going to be connected to The Cloverfield Universe, but it ended up being it’s own thing entirely. But after watching it, I found my expectations were entirely flawed, because not only is this a great movie, but it works far better being a standalone film rather than being connected to any specific universe. This film I’m talking about is of course, Overlord.

I remember when my brother and I went to go see Overlord back in 2018 when it first came out , our theater was completely empty it was just us and we had a blast watching this movie this movie kicked ass and I wish this movie did better at the box office because this movie is severely underrated
A big regret of mine is that I didn’t see it in theaters! One of my favorite guilty pleasure movies to watch I think it’s severe underrated. I think if it had the Cloverfield name attached to it it might’ve done slightly better, but people would also probably not like it as much because it’s not your typical Cloverfield film.
@@thethriftytypewriter oh that's a bummer dude sorry you didn't get the chance to see it in theaters and yeah I remember hearing they considered putting in the Cloverfield universe but then for some reason they decided against it which in my opinion I think was a big mistake it definitely would have done better at the box office if it had the Cloverfield name attached to it
I also saw it in theatres. I was the only one in there, hooting and hollering at the sheer chaos of it all. So so good.

This film might be the closest thing we get to a Wolfenstein movie, but saying that this film works fantastically on its own. I love it, and I hope more WW2 horror films like this get created, like Frankenstein Army and Deathwatch, I'd pay good money for that genre.

The scene with the soldier getting revived, overheating with delirium, and then going full Necromorph, really, _really_ establishes the movie.
Watching the plane and drop scenes in theaters was one of the most thrilling experiences I can recall.

@@mattlombardi54 had to be. Imagine being a German and seeing thousands of men jumping out of planes,, hundreds of planes, hundreds of boats rolling up, shelling coming from those boats, bullets and bombs being dropped on your location.
Watched Overlord a couple years ago with the family and man, it was so much better than what we all expected. We got into the movie just knowing it was a WW2 movie with zombies, literally nothing else. We didn't know what kind of zombies, I was actually the only one who even watched the trailer. So when the resuscitation scene came... Wow. It was so well made and perfectly shocking, we were all sitting there, glued to the screen.
This is a great underrated movie, much like Upgrade or Radius, both films I love but no one seems to talk about.
Upgrade was great just like Overlord. Don't understand how nearly no one knows Upgrade. Though I am guilty of not knowing about Radius which is now officially on the top of my watch list. Thx 4 the suggest bro.
@@SuperSpasticNinja Radius is very hit-or-miss for some people but I think it was a well done movie. It had a premise and story and executed it well.

I am so happy people are realizing how kick-ass this movie is. I saw it in theaters and it's stuck with me for years.
This movie sucks balls
The simplistic poster for this movie was also badass. The drops of blood parachutes is iconic
And even the blood parachutes being the background of the characters that were featured in the movie
I remember watching this around the time CODWW2 came out, and overlord felt like the story they were *trying* to tell; and I absolutely love it.
CoDWW2 Zombies had so much potential. Really shifted the theme from the classic zombies to a much more horror focused story.

I actually still think it’s apart of the clover field universe.
The tar is what’s used in the super serum and I think it could be super easy to tie those affects to the sea nectar from the monster. Maybe there’s one buried under the ground and that’s why the tar is bubbling up!
Totally just a theory and I know the movie was “confirmed” not apart of the universe, but I like to think it is:)
I wasn't expecting much the first time I heard "zombie WW2 movie" but damn was I surprised by how good it was.
The movie is rewatchable as hell. After viewing it, when it went to streaming, I instantly liked it. I love how it bends the genre. Starting as a straight WW2 film, and half way through, changing into a zombie/sci-fi flick. As campiness bleeds into the second half, it has a great one and done quality. I can’t describe it, but it feels like an old school 80s flick. Something that you just get a good feeling from it. Even though it is horror.
My dad got this movie completely unaware it was a zombie horror. It was extremely funny to see this reaction to it being a horror movie

I think another piece that makes it such a great movie to watch is they didn’t cheap out in the costume department. All the uniforms and outfits worn by the characters are appropriate to the time and context of what they’re portraying historically. The Kit the Americans are wearing are exactly what you see the real guys of the 101st Airborne wear on D-Day. The Airborne’s uniforms were very different to what the standard army wore in WWII. And I’ve seen WWII B Movies in the past like ghosts of war that just slap random pieces of kit onto the actors and call it a day. The majority of what you see them wearing in this movie is correct and correlates to the historical events they’re based around, which I can guarantee you makes many historians very happy!

You're right that it really hits that spot that the original CoD Zombies maps/games once hit. Creepy, mysterious, horrific, violent, and unsympathetic.
What a kick ass underrated gem! Dragged my two friends to this movie randomly one night after a smoke session. They were wondering what the hell I brought them to when i bought the tickets, by the end they were heavily invested. Wish more films were like this, ENTERTAINING and WELL MADE.
Watching this movie in theaters, with a total of like 10 people, it’s such a great seeing people love and support this movie. Truly underrated
I loved Overlord so much it had me at the release of the trailer already. I got to watch the movie like a year later but it was definetly worth it. Just look at Overlord's "zombies". The design of the infected make the movie in my opinion a 5/10 by itself and then you got the setting, each characters, villain etc. etc.
I watched the movie like 6 times now and it just doesnt get boring tbh.
This film is so well done for what it is and just incredibly underrated. Wyatt Russell particularly channeling a lot of his father’s 80s action star energy!
I remember walking out of a movie with my dad so many years ago and we saw the trailer for this being played on one of the screens outside where you buy the tickets. Hells Bells in the trailer made it seem to cool to us but sadly, maybe like a lot of people we just didnt get around to seeing it. Ended up watching it a few years ago on netflix, it was actually so good and very enjoyable, its a movie, movies have flaws but this still felt like such a fun watch, regardless.
This movie is so underrated that it is WILD. I LOVED this movie when I first saw it in theaters. The fact that it didn't do as well as was expected was a complete tragedy, and I hope to see more people talk about it.
The thing with guns in this movie:
Even when they miss there are particles everywhere, pieces of wall flying all around, dust floating and things breaking down. It does not look like a bunch of dudes with super soakers. The destruction makes them feel real and threatening!

I had no idea this movie existed until it popped up on Shudder. Nothing much attracted me to it until I saw a review on YT, and this has to be one of the best movie surprises I’ve ever had. Great film - engrossing, thrilling, horrifying, bastard enemies to root against and likeable heroes. Can’t ask for more!🎉

Probably the best zombie movie we’ve gotten in years, it really deserved to do better.

It being a zombie movie ruined it imo. And I'm a massive zombie advocate to the core. Idk maybe I need to rewatch it but having no context and seeing it blind before it felt so off-putting to just slap zombies in the film
@@mortar365Idk why people label them as zombies. They’re more of a super soldier. When have zombies ever spoken or had a conscious?
@@RickytickyBobbywobbin-jl5oy in many instances zombies were created to be used as a weapon of super soldiers that can be controlled. The Nazis having maintained consciousness and the ability to talk after the mutation/curse whatever the premise may be is just a plus for whoever gets the good without the bad basically. Resident evil does this on multiple occasions. Smart zombies just vary by intelligence and how the body took whatever contagion. Sometimes the benefits only last for a bit and they still die and change into a traditional undead zombie

Yes, I’m happy they removed it from the Cloverfield timeline. It would not have made sense.
PLEASANTLY surprised by this movie and how good it is. The two one take shots that begin and end the movie were true scene gems.

I remember watching overlord on a late night flight back when It first came out, and I was super pleasantly surprised with how good of a movie it is. Like you said, it really scratches the same itch as cod zombies
I watched this movie a while ago because of your cloverfield movies that could be connected video that you made and I loved this movie like I sat down not expecting much but by the end I was like wow that’s pretty good like I watch it from start to finish without getting up.
I watched this in theaters. I loved it. The rumble from the speakers, the action, everything was amazing.
hardly ever comment or write anything on videos like this, but this movie deserves so much more recognition than what it originally received. the concept, story line and over all way this movie was executed makes it one of my favorite horror films to date. I really wish they dove further into this universe with sequels and or a longer deeper story in the original film.

I watched this for the first time on a plane, it made the opening of this movie so immersive it was incredible.
One of my favorite moments is when Boyce is still in the half destroyed plane. He's nearly falling into the fire and the music is tremendous! It felt like he was already in Hell long before the lab was even a thought.
Saw this with my cousin opening weekend at an empty theater room and we had such a blast with this movie! The sound quality was perfection👍🏼
If U watch Trench 11 and then Overlord then it might feel like The two are connected.
Trench 11 is a World War 1 film with the same premise as Overlord, It was released in 2017.
This movie would have been hard mid for me but the dude's sacrifice at the end and his last words made this movie actually good to me.

Me and my friend went and saw it in theaters! It was SO good! I had completely forgotten about it though until this video. The use of practical effects actually makes sense as to why I liked it so much lol
The opening was amazing, the living head lady was a sight to behold, the gore is really realistic
I enjoyed it. I couldn’t believe how they We’re able to pull it off and it not be super cheesy. The place scene was very cool.
watched this film because ian de caesteker, from agents of shield, was in it. loved the whole film. such a unique presentation of the zombie genre, despite sharing things in common w/ COD:Z
caught it in theaters opening niche because i was still holding out hope it was connected to the clovey universe… although it wasn’t i was NOT disappointed
Of course! I dont think its a masterpiece by any means but its definitely underrated, characters were fun to watch and the action was awesome. Scared me a few times! Ha!

When i saw the ads for this movie i was playing wolfenstein:old blood for the like 5th time.
I of course saw it similarly and had to see it.
Got my brother to watch it with me, and we both walked out recounting and analyzing everything great that happened.
One of my favorite little project movies i've ever seen.
Ironically, the movie hit the "zombie" part around the same time old blood did.
I remember when this movie came out in theaters. I wasn't able to see it their and I only heard about it briefly from other people. When I finally watched it, I was thoroughly entertained and it exceeded my expectations, especially the airplane scene at the beginning. This movie definitely deserves more praise and attention. It almost reminds me of when the Thing suffered at the box office in the 80s, but has now become an underrated classic.

The opening scene with the pov of them falling from the plane is my favorite scene. The rest is a brilliant movie and that opening puts you right along with them
Watched it with my GF and we went into it thinking it would be bad or corny but it was just amazing, one of my favorite zombie films.
My dad took me to see this movie when it came out, and he didn’t tell me a thing about it ahead of time. I think that made it into one of the best and most impactful movie experiences I’ve ever had

Overlord is one of those great movies I've only seen once. Which is rare because I usually rewatch movies I've enjoyed at least a few times. After watching this video, I think it's time to revisit this movie.
This movie is fantastic, so much fun, such a great world, great characters, great action, great atmosphere and tone. Might have to watch it for the millionth time now...
I was working at a theater at the time this came out, we did previews for employees of movies that were coming out that week after all the regular shows were over, and my god was it worth staying up till 3 am for

I adore this movie and completely agree with you, it is just an excelent B-movie. It's tense, it's horrifying when it wants to be and the sacrifice of the corporal didn't feel cheesy to me, Great surprise of being this good of a film
I was saw Overlord without ever seeing a trailer or even hearing about it. I was supposed to see something else but the tickets were sold out to the other movie and not wanting to cancel our plans it looked like a WWII movie from the random promo poster. The movie started 5 minutes before but we just went anyway. I’ll tell you what, expecting a completely different movie and getting a horror is one of the best experiences honestly. I’m a huge horror fan and I couldn’t shake the feeling that the movie was “filmed like a horror” and had a horror soundtrack but I just couldn’t confirm it until it reveals itself. It had its standard action shot and it’s environment pans, then it would switch to a creepy bird eye where the squad is being watched, or the eerie doom shot where the audience knows something is lurking but the protagonists don’t. Over all amazing imo
Going in blind to this movie was the best thing I ever did. The only other film like this was SISU. Thought it was the usual WW2 movie and boy oh boy was I for a surprise. So well shot, acted and directed. Visual pleasure and just 10/10 on all aspects 😁

It's named after the ALLIED (Not American) Battle for Normandy (not invasion)- Operation Overlord, or D-Day.
But this movie has loads of little things in it that make it so smart, like the Americans can't understand German, but Chloe can, so you only get subtitles when she's there as only she can understand them, it's also why you get subtitles for French as one of them can understand it. Also, a surprising amount of main characters survive for a horror movie, none of that final girl or a-moral people die only stuff. And it really shows that some of them aren't seasoned military men, they were plucked out of their homes to fight because they were needed, they're openly scared for their lives.
The people are also not all being experimented on, they're being used to filter the black liquid in order to make the serum, the side effect of that causes the mutations in the townspeople.
Great movie! I agree with all of your points about it. Nothing groundbreaking, but thoroughly entertaining.

Love this movie. Got to watch when it came out, and had a blast watching it. It’s just like you said. It’s a B movie through and through. For me, the best part is that it isn’t trying to be something else. That’s why it works so well.
I think the fact that J.J. Abrams pushed for this film to be largely made with practical effects instead of relying on CG is what made this movie work as well as it did. Even the "zombies" were practical effects and prostethics.
I think the main thing that holds this movie back is the ungodly amount of lens flares.
Ya know, now that you mention it, I now hold the headcannon that John Walker from The Falcon and Winter Soldier series is a relative of Corporal Ford from Overlord, and the something about their DNA is what allowed Walker and Ford to survive their respective "enhancement" serums.

I always got soft corner for such movies and especially when it is mixed with horror element with war in it. When trailer came out I was sure that I will enjoy it and I did so yeah a solid movie but I never thought it's gonna be underrated.
I was so hyped to see this movie. So when I watched it in theaters back in 2018, I was NOT disappointed. Everything about this movie great. (Except for the box office sales.) This movie deserves better.

Wormwood is a pretty good movie, if anyone cares to check it out. Zombies/Mad Max style, I loved it
I hope this will become a classic in the future, it was absolutely good, I watched with zero expectations and I guess that also helped on my enjoyment, hope more people will know and appreciate this movie

Frankenstein's Army is another great alternate WWII history flick
To me it felt more like Wolfenstein.
I guess you could say I was waiting for "Overlord", I had found out about "Frankenstein's Army" from a friend. It took some effort to get the movie, I saw so much promise in it. To me, OL was heavily inspired by FA. Neither are perfect, but as just a popcorn muncher could there be a better genre than WW2.
I think the movie is great, I'm just disappointed that Wyatt Russell hasn't gotten more roles like this.
In my opinion this is one of my favourite war and zombie movies, both elements of the movie were handled very very well.
What I find so fascinating is that the director even stated that the movie could theoretically be connected to Cloverfield. When asked how he said, "We don't know what Slusho is made out of nor do we know what this goo is either. Make with it as you see fit."
this movie flew under everyones radar. the scene where the soldier first sees teh subjects in the lab was awesome reminded me or survival horror games like silent hill and early resident evil.
I went with a buddy he said let’s see overlord and I had no idea what it was about beforehand so it made the viewing experience pretty awesome
