Ironically enough, despite Rick's plea to the Governor that nobody is too far gone and that they can be saved and peace can happen, Rick learned that some people just weren't made for the pressures of the apocalypse and that some survivors he's going to meet are too far gone and can't be helped. I think that's why the episode had such a long lasting impact, it's likely one of the key moments where Rick as a character realized that Shane was right about a lot of things he said. I think Season 4 episode 9, the one right after Too Far Gone, was the end of the "Let's help everyone we come across" Rick and the beginning of the "Let's feed people as need feeding and shoot them as need shooting" Rick that we are familiar with today.

Rick and Friends even bend time and space to find food/ammo whenever they need it or alter the rules of their own show, such as Rick explaining that walkers are drawn towards blood, but when darryl was unconcious with a bleeding arrow wound, the zombie slightly nibbeled on his shoe. despite Negan having alot more elements to his character and being in the show for a long time, something about The Governor definately made him a scarier more unhinged villain than Negan, whos now more of an anti hero. he seemed more serious, believable, and more intimidating than Negan who (even tho hes a rlly cool character) was more of a manchild leading the Saviors. Now I’ve had a different take on the Governor. I see Too Far Gone as him almost finding peace. He could’ve tortured Michonne. He had every chance to, but didn’t. He’s a changed man, not the same as before. But his fear of trusting Rick won over, ending it all. I honestly believe if Rick offered to leave, he wouldn’t fire.

@@thethriftytypewriter I just don’t see S4 rendition f the Governor being the same as S3. Where S3 version loves to kill, S4’s version really doesn’t want to kill. He only killed those 2 guys in episode 7 since they were a threat to his new family. One was constantly holding a knife over his head over telling Lilly what Philip really did, and the other was an indecisive leader. Hell, for a while he seemed content being out of the line light and not in change. But that changed. The conversation Philip had with Hershel in the RV makes me really believe he doesn’t want there to be any bloodshed. Just a simple exchange of goods.

Another tell, he didn't take his AUG with him. I agree with you and I find the episode makes it clear as well. He truly believed he'd roll up to the Prison and take it without firing a shot. Its only when he realizes he isn't getting that, does he snap. He's not the same Gov from Season 3. A lot of TWD fans are to be honest..pretty dense. It was so much more complex than "he just wanted revenge on Rick and co" when his three episodes literally telegraph the opposite, even the lines he says. There was no point to his solo episodes if its the same motives for the Gov from S3, kill the group I hate so much. He wanted the Prison for Meghan and his new group, period. It wouldn't have mattered if Rick and his group were there or someone else was. He would have tortuted and killed Michonne if the fans belief was accurate, yet he all but apologizes to her. Michonne Penny was already dead I know that now. The fans need to go back and rewatch his solo episodes.

3:15 is probably my favorite 20 seconds of television. You can feel the Governor truly weighing Rick's words (I think this is why the camera focuses on the sword, as if to portray the Governor actually feeling the weight of the sword, and the "weight" of the moment, the decision he has to make, and Rick's words. Plus something in there about being "on the knifes edge.") and you can feel Rick's helplessness as the ball is fully in the Governor's hands. Then, the pure vitriol in the word "Liar," whispered as if he's not even convinced of it himself (perhaps he means that, Rick may be able to forget the past, but the Governor cannot) but feels compelled to press on with his own actions.
Then there's the cut. With one stroke, the Governor ended not just a chance at peace, but killed the most hopeful member of the prison group and the same one who did his best to rein Rick back into a more civilized life.
And then there's Rick's reaction. There's no symbolism here, he just screams in rage, and pulls his revolver and fires rapidly. Pure emotion.

One thing not many people mention is the Fort Benning connection. Mitch and some of the other people at the camp came from Fort Benning after it fell, and soldiers from Fort Benning supplied the Governor's military supplies. And, after the entire story of our protagonists takes place in a reality where they changed their minds from their original goal of going to Fort Benning is on the other side of the fence of a group of people who did. It's a nice parallel and a conclusion to the first half of the story of the Walking Dead.

Ever since the governor kept trying to danger ricks group with making those few trips to the prison to attack off and on and then finally have the governor fighting rick and beating the shit out of him as him killing Hershel amd destroying the prison for ricks group to leave , was definitely a wake up call to rick from Shane as he couldn’t hold it in anymore with trying to maintain his humanity and the nice side of him . The first episode of this season was Rick’s little adventure with the Crazy Blazer lady trying to feed him to Eddy the Heady. That’s the introduction of this idea of being “too far gone” that he discusses with Hershel. Hershel says that there’s no such thing as too far gone, and Rick slowly starts to see it through his perspective through the first half of the season. Rick’s speech was the little glimpse of him finally understanding Hershel’s ideology of coming back to humanity, but it’s quickly smothered out by the death of Hershel. The final nail in the coffin is when Crazy Blazer lady is amongst the walkers that overrun the prison in the end 👀

Personally, I believe that The Governer DID want to take the prison peacefully, but Rick's speech, and him knowing who Rick was (knowing Rick during his insane era), it made something break in him.
I think that, in that moment, he realized that he was back where he started (s3 finale); in charge, and leading an attack. Even though it's not a position he wants or a decision he wants to make, he somehow finds his way back there, and Rick's speech broke something in him -- the belief that people change. He doesn’t want to believe that people can change because he feels that he hasn't even after how hard he's tried. So, he gives in and gives up trying to be good.
If you've heard it, Kanye West's "Runaway" kinda perfectly encapsulates The Governer.

I never understood why the governor killed Hershel in that moment when he had Michonne in his grasp (the person he was initially after. the woman who killed his zombified daughter, the woman that if Rick would of gave up in the first place the war wouldn't have taken place .... probably lol) but Side Note great job in the videos as a fan who's seen every episode this series is a great listen when I'm at work I don't have to watch my phone because I recall everything you are talking about you also have great perspectives on the episodes you talk about 🤝🏼👍🏼 Keep it up 💯

I can't believe that they thought it was ever ok to leave the Governor out there somewhere. Michonne should have stuck to her instincts and kept looking for him.

it still surprises me people so quick that to kill each other instead of walkers. Because in zombie apocalypse there is no good or bad ending just chaotically neutral there's always going to wild card

The way Rick handle things here, it does make me wonder what Shane would've done differently if he was in Rick's position in this very moment, assuming the group would've even lasted as long as they did with Shane in charge.

Ah yes, e08s04, the episode that was the true ending of this show for me.
After this peak, they never could come close to this level of perfection, in fact, the downfall of the show really started after this episode.
