- Hi, I just thought I'd paint some models using a few chrome paints that I had bought for this video Ill get spatz for the next video and some others I saw, I may not have gotten the best results but the results in this video were my first attempts I will experiment further in future videos having see others getting much more mirrored surface finishes.
The paints I used were, Alclad Chrome, Alclad For Lexan, Molotow Liquid Chrome, Mirror by Stuart Semple, Rustoleum Chrome, Rustoleum Mirror Finish Gold,(For Glass Surfaces) all over 2 thick coats of Halfords Gloss Black paint. If I ever get some Alumaluster Ill do my review of that too!
To support me on patreon for future videos and 3d Models:

thanks for all the work in testing these paints. This is a VERY good comparison vid .thanks hella lot !
Thanks a lot!
thanks for taking the time to do this and share it but I've no idea what product go's to what example.
I know how you feel. I have them all but they are all good. You have options. for the most mirrored effect go for mirror or molotow basically. But all look good.
Pefect video, thanks for the comparison! The hunt for a Chrome that doesn't lose its shine or reflectivity when clearcoated continues. I am still trying to candycoat chrome but really haven't experimented with 2K yet.
allclad with aqua gloss works. the aqua gloss doesn't dull the shine of allclad
The mirror does recommend brushing on.
Brushed results are even more hideous. Also, the volatility to handling renders both Molotow and Mirror (which evidently work the same way) unusable for such intents and purposes. This is a far cry from the godsend final solution that Mirror proclaims to be on the website's product page.
Yeah I attempted to finely wet sand a fibrous material and it just made the finish scratchy... Needs a glassy smooth material as a base to get the best mirror
Putting on a few more thick coats helped but not to the extent they proclaim this product is capable of... The designer of the product actually recommends to brush out as thin as possible that very little goes a long way... I can verify that myself with the mirror coat but it looses it's mirror like sheen/reflectivity the thinner you layer it... Which you would expect
This was a great video. Thank you. Have you ever tried Alumaluster? I’m curious how it compares to these.
Thanks so much for the testing demo. You mention in you video that you will be testing sealers, I've been unable to find it. I'm particularly interested in sealer for the Liquid Mirror by Culture Hustle. Can you help please.
Yo this was a pretty nice, very thorough video for comparison... sure it's virtually impossible to get those spots perfect haha esp when ur working w rounded surfaces but I thot u did a prity bang up job ! ... x Ke
Thanks so much!! Ill try to do more of these.
Great video.. Can you supply links to the paint your demoing. Thanks
Great video man, is there anyway I contact you ? I messed up one of my collection pieces and was wondering if the mirror paint will match it.
Thanks Cloakfiend. Based on your previous video I made a model and learnt about and used Alclad II Chrome. I got the misting too on several tries I think it was putting the airbrush too close and maybe too much of the carrier for the metal got on and made it misty. My mirror finish is good from 30cm away, looking close there's tiny misted spots.
Yes thats true from a little further away the alclad looks great! They all do really! But just need to find a miat free way of applying the molotow as its cheaper than the mirrior and ive seen other people using it well. I think i need to let more out of the airbrush. Ill prob do a vid about that in the near future.
Hello I could type the components of the Molotow Liquid Chrome, Mirror by Stuart Semple, it is on the back of the packaging. thank you.
U should also try grafite powder.
Did you have to thin the "Mirror" paint before spraying?
Your hazing in the final finish is from too much humidity in your room where you spray. These paints, as especially the laquers, are very sensitive to moisture. Yuo need some dry heat.
Yes ive noticed hazing comes and goes. Its such sensitive paint!@
thanks for the video. have you any experience with clear coating it?
Not yet im still trying a few things. Will post a video if i get good results.
Excellent comparison! Is Mirror paint on the skull painted over black?
Yes everything is painted on black gloss.
I'd be interested to know how they handle finger prints from touching when dry... and how easily the finger prints can be buffed out.
Without a clear coat they are ok to touch but with clean dry hands and not for too long.
These paint surfaces can still be polished, if you spray too thick coats with Alclad it will become milky.
Mine didn't become milky. I probably undersprayed if anything. Im now experimenting in clearcoats.
Gotta wait for molotow to cure to point where u can’t touch it and it won’t smudge, honestly at that point it’s extremely durable before putting klear on , but takes days if not an entire week. Molotow is tricky to spray I use refill bottles, it’s thinner than marker. Since it’s thick and thinning takes away from mirror of it even in very small amounts. You could do an entire helmet 3 times over with the refill bottle non thinned, it’s actually easier to do large areas w it since you aren’t wasting any spray out over spray
@@kjfuerst2838 i found it hazed randomly like mirror. Perhaps i should have heated it up a bit?
Im using the Molotow Chrome with the Alclad 2 Klear Kote, but it still kills the shine a little bit I found.
Thanks good to know. Does 2kclear also dull it? Im still going to try that.
@@Cloakfiend I havnt tried it. It only kills it like 10%, if you compare the two you can see uncoated is Slightly better
@@AdnanCucak Thanks thats good to know!!
Barely even ten percent at times, I’ve used klear Kote literally right after spraying molotow when it’s wet and it was barely noticeable if any once dry. I’ve also sprayed it within 10-30 min Asking with+1-5 days. Best finished we’re immediately our days out, gotta be cured it wet.
Are the bands on the chromed skull at 8:55 due to the LED array grid line issue?
No, for some reason the paint fogs up like that if its not applied heavy enough i think.
@@Cloakfiend Right on. Good video. You did a tone of work. I appreciate you sharing your work.
Does the mirror rub off if you touch it? I find with Alclad and Molotow that if I don't apply a clearcoat the chrome will rub off easily if I handle the item.
Yes it rubbs off. But not that easily. However the sweat in your hand if you have any ot humidity in the room will make it fog it its too damp.
It’s not that Molotow takes a long time to dry, it’s that it takes a long time to cure. Dry and cure are two very different things. You can easily damage Molotow after it’s dry because it hasn’t fully cured. Once it’s cured it’s much sturdier and able to resist damage.
For the price its great. But i find itvdifficult to apply over large areas uniformly.
doing a helmet with the MOLOTOW, how much would I need to get an even coat? 2 bottles? also what PSI do you recommend
Not too high psi i dis 15 i think. But experiment. One bottle goes a long way.
Can you do a tutorial on how to apply mirror?
Sure ill try and dovanother video soon!
Did you do a vid on the clear coat on top of the chrome's? Also how durable is that deco colour rattle can ? Cheers
Not yet but will do soon.
@@Cloakfiend hi. OK cool. Interested to see how durable that deco colour is without clear coat. Attempting to do a chrome look mk2 iron man helmet
I would like to know where you got the skulls and id they are available to the U.S.?
I modelled them myself. Im starting my patreon up again soon but will also put induvidual items on cgtrader and a few others for a few dollars so stay tuned and ill let you know in a vid soon!
Takes a few hours to dry, takes a few days to cure.
Ah i see!
Hello, have you manage to do clear coat video ? Thank you for video!
Not yet! Will do soon!
@@Cloakfiend Super Interested! Especially for a big parts.
Did you add anything to the Mirror brand paint before putting it in the airbrush?
Nope. I used a syringe and went straight out of the bottle into the airbrush.
@@Cloakfiend Nice, thank you! I just ordered some to try out with my airbrush. I appreciate the informative video!
@@GundamM3ister your welcome!
alsa easy chrome is where it's at.
Thanks for this comparison! My experience with Molotow is the same as mentioned below with Alclad 2 Klear Kote (and Future Floor Polish). Molotow will dull almost immediately when applying a clear coat. Its not horrible, but not the same reflectivity as without clear. Also Molotow tended to be easy to finger print and dull when handled without clear, even after decent cure time. I heard that allowing Molotow to cure for as long as a week before clear coating would help to maintain its luster, but I have yet to try that. I was curious if you found Mirror to be more durable than Molotow used as is? Or are they the same? Some of the other options you tested aren't too bad for what they are, I'll have to give them a try as well. Thanks again!
I just saw your Mirror specific review video. It seems to behave the same as Molotow in terms of durability, so I think you answered my questions in that video, thanks!
@@patrickho5200 happy to help! Ill do a clear coating video as well. Out of curiosity.
@@Cloakfiend I probably wont get around to trying Mirror myself anytime soon. But I look forward to your Mirror clear coat test video if you do!
@@patrickho5200 thanks ill do my best!
No it won’t use alclaad candy clear after it’s cured no fog adds to gloss in simmer cases, very protective. Put it on heavy and molotow will be mirror af
Did you ever fine out which clear coat doesnt mess with the molotow? Everything I've tested dulls it.
No i dont think anything can go on top. Ill try some things later 2kclear is the best i hear though.
@@Cloakfiend ive been told water based polyurethane , or poly based floor wax .
@@danieledwards7178 im not so sure. I think temperatute of application matters get it room temp at the very least, id try warmer. But i need to test out a few things myself! Ive yet to do a thourogh test.
Which one is more durable to the touch
Hmm didnt try them all but the mirror ànd molotow are very sensitive to moisture. Youneed to clear coat them to handle them
Is it possible to get the gold color chrome or turn the silver chrome into gold?
Id imagine a clear wash after may work but i think a gold chrome is available. Ill take a look.
@@Cloakfiend I have been looking for a long time, but seems like the only way to get the same mirror effect for gold is chromeplating/electroplating. If they are able to make the chrome marker pen for silver, what is the reason that they can't make chrome marker pens for gold and other colors?
@@brianyim5006 does alclad gold not look good? Ill give it a try soon. Not sure why they dont make gold chrome in pebs. I thought i saw some a while back. Will look again!
@@Cloakfiend It will be great if you can try it and make a new video to show the effects. I looked up the alclad gold samples from the other modelers, the effects are still dull and blurry, not as reflective as the Molotow's silver chrome, and looks like it needs to be painted on surface that already has a chrome silver layer. Also I don't know if there is a clear gold paint that can keep the mirror effect when it is applied on the chrome silver base.
@@brianyim5006 ill try some others gold and copper as well i have a feeling they arent as good aa silver.
I prefer Liquid Mirror and Alclad Chrome to rechrome old toys such as Transformers and Super Sentai DX toys. Molotow Liquid Chrome is not the best Chrome because it gets smudged even few weeks of dry.
How. you seal it
Thats the magic question! Im doing some tests now.
@@Cloakfiend can you updated us please
@@sergioknuf im not sure of the best way of sealing it at the moment as many traditional ways fog it up. Id definitely do it in a dry room with little humidity. These paints react badly to moisture. I need to get some 2k clear to test. My airbrush is broken atm.
Mirror is made for glass
Its not made for glass. Its more made for smooth plastic. The guy who created it only uses it on plastic for his demonstrations.
Thanks so much for posting this, I was recommended AK extreme chrome over Alclad because Alclad marks easily. After a lot of research I wanted a comparison between chrome paints and in particular Mirror and Molotow. I also looked at Alsa easy chrome but didn't feel like taking a loan out to cover the cost. I was going to buy Mirror but its more expensive than Molotow and the difference between them is hardly noticeable. You have saved me money and time so thanks very much. You might find this helpful in terms of a clear coat although I don't know if you can get it in the UK czcams.com/video/UV9a1QxEw0A/video.html he uses a clear coat at around 6.57 into the video. I have a really decent dehumidifier so will get this running before applying the paint which might help with the hazing/streaks. Hope this info helps. Thanks again
Thanks! Im doing a clear coat video real soon. That spectra color is hard to find! I remember this video a while back too!!
I used to have 2 expensive Iwata's. Now I use a cheap $24 Master airbrush & I cannot see any difference at all. Since I started airbrushing back in the 80's, I have seen everybody, 100%, pushing Iwata & Paasche. Truth is, you're just paying for the name. My cheap $24 Master airbrush is the same exact thing. I've been using it for years & never had a problem. As long as you keep it clean & don't let the paint dry in it, you won't have any problems. To hell with paying over $100 just for a stupid name.
I agree, if it works use it. I just happen to have this one for the last 15-20 odd years. Tbh I just bought what was in the shop window at the time and saw zero maintenance on the compressor and i was like yep sounds like a plan. Ive used a few but have no real bias!
Problem with molotow and mirror is neither are dry mirror like. Both are shiny. But they just don’t have the clear reflective that like alclad give you. Their shiny. But not really a top notch spray chrome.
''Molotow takes 3 days to dry''
Uhm Molotow is a brand for graffiti writers
If it took 3 days to dry it would be essentially useless on the streets
Sure you can make the argument that after 3 days the ink/paint has cured better
But really it should be dry within minutes lol
You need a better base Esurance. Half the skulls were in garbage condition with scrathes. Poorly done
They werent scratches it was the raw print with a black car paint gloss. All the scratches were on the model didnt really affect the application. Just needed a few clear areas. As a test for quick comparison is ok by me.
