This is very similar to something I did recently that got me out of a bind. I mixed black So-Strong tint into the 2K clear and used it as a baseboat on a flexible prop. Provided a beautiful, black, flexible basecoat that took Spaz Stix perfectly.

I used the Rustoleum chrome spray can and when I went to glue the pieces together with CA glue the accelerate caused a reaction with the chrome that made it look like corroded aluminum. This was on a Fallout Laser gun so this accident turned out to be the perfect weathering.

I know you’ve likely answered this in a FAQ or something but have you worked in the industry much? Your proficiency with costuming and your presentation skills are absolutely tops. I’m surprised you haven’t been recruited via contract by Weta or LucasFilm/Disney. I know you seem to be more 3PO and droid work, but I’d love to see what your take on a Robocop costume would be like. You’re awesome. Keep up the beautiful work.

Thank you!!! I've been fortunate enough to have worked a bit with some of the companies you named. :D
As far as RoboCop, I did do a custom RoboCop helmet a few years ago. I sculpted it from scratch over an actors lifecast, then molded and cast the parts. Paint was done at Studio ADI along with the rest of the suit, which was copied from a screen used stunt suit. I'm really happy with how it came out.
I might have some video of the process on here someplace but here's a video of it in action!
      czcams.com/video/-xMf65c4sC0/video.html
it was also used in an Epic Rap Battles vid (but worn slightly incorrectly... uggg. wasn't there to dress the actor unfortunately)

Did you use a high gloss clear coat on the piece before you put the Alclad on? Or a matte clear coat?

That's cool! I suppose if it gets any ligh surface scratches it will just go down to clear coat and silver! Awesome!
    Q: was it a 2K clearcoat?

The Alcald looks fantastic. Also can't get over how good the rattle can silver looks. Would you mind sharing what product that was? Thanks!

that was Rust-Oleum Bright Coat Metallic Chrome Spray Paint. Looks even more reflective when it's not weathered and kicked around. big drawback is that it takes a LONG time to dry and the finish is always sensitive to fingerprints etc. Looks fine for temporary stuff or items that won't get handled.

Wow that looks killer, even the silver looks pretty good. I'm painting a t800 endo arm that i want to be chrome but with weathering. Any suggestions on what to weather alclad with or best way to protect it. Also have you tried the AK xtreme metal chrome.

Justin Poulsen It’ll probably kill the chrome effect and make it a flatter silver. I spent days preparing some truck parts for chrome effect, gloss black then the chrome, they then wanted a clear coat to stop stone chipping...and after all that work it looked like normal silver basecoat and lacquer 🤦🏻‍♂️🤣

@@DarioDarrow rough!!! It's happened to the best of us. I experienced a similar effect before, and have since picked up some Alclad brand specific Clear Lacquer. Haven't had a chance at trying it yet though.

Hi Gordon, thanks for the videos. I was wondering if I need to clear coat any of the Alclad metals? I want to use the polished Aluminum but was wondering if I could just leave it after airbrushing or do I really need to clear coat it? If so, what should I clear coat it with? It will be for Greebles for my R2D2. Thanks!

Nice! Have you tried the moltow silver marker paint? I'm curious where that lines up with your different silver/chrome methods. I used the markers directly on a couple parts of the Porg Hunter droid and was really impressed with the result. (though I did not clear coat after) .

    • @gordontarpley
      @gordontarpley  Před 4 lety +1

Looks good, takes a little less prep work but takes FOREVER to dry and is really sensitive to fingerprints for a long time. Alclad is touchable in a few seconds. I like that.
