    A good video. I've always been wary about using Alclad chrome etc, due to it's alleged fragility, and inability to be clear coated. Certainly lots of people on modelling pages on the internet / social media say you can't clear coat Alclad chrome. But you've actually shown that you can!
    So that's something I'm going to try as well, especially since I'm not keen on the kit chrome on car kits, which looks too toy like.

    Hi. Thanks for your demo. Interestingly I had the same problem with the Airframe Aluminium coming off. I talked to the Alclad people at the show at Telford (UK) about it and they told me to do exactly the same thing and use the Aqua Gloss to seal it. It worked really well. one of the strange things they told me was to brush it on with a soft brush and that works really well too. I've also found it's an excellent gloss for use over ordinary paint too. Well worth it.

    Kev Lawlor from Australia. Hi Buddy, today I started to spray Alclad II
    Primer & Microfiller followed by Gloss Black Base. I completely screwed it up. I was building my own airbrush spray booth which went well as I am a builder however, I have not hooked up the extractor fan so I sprayed in an open door but out of the wind. The end result was mottled and spotty and crappy looking. I put this down, eventually. to the residual air-born paint residue drying in the booth and settling on the wet surface. Would you agree with this? I contacted Hobby Tools Australia and ordered the air booth you reviewed some time back with the LED lights around it. It has a great extraction system and was only $200.00.

    • @dunka12
      @dunka12 Před rokem

      @@pixelpuppy You're not doing anything wrong. So far, any kind of clear coating will dull the metallic look. If you do that with real metal, it will still produce the same effect. What i do these days is after alclad metallics, i don't clear coat at all. I just leave it to fully cure for a few days. It's fairly resilient after.
      Whenever i work on a mech, i paint the metallic bits first, then let them cure and i avoid touching them while i work on the rest of the build.
      I also don't really use Alclad clear coats anymore these days. I prefer Mr.hobby ones. They cure better, and they are tougher, without becoming sticky, etc. Besides metallic paints, Alclad doesn't do great products. They are always hit or miss. I had a batch of black gloss primer, it was constantly clogging my airbrush, and was becoming clumpy. Not sure what was wrong with it, but i never had this issue with GaiaNotes or MrHobby, on any of their products. Pretty mediocre quality control i suspect.

Acrylics use a water base, Enamels are oil based and Lacquers are solvent based. They all perform different and it's up to the Hobbyist to choose what's best for them. Acrylics are popular for people in closed areas like apartments cause there's no smell or chemicals involved but they don't perform nearly as well as lacquers. Lacquer is my favorite as they perform just about perfect every time I use them. Acrylics require a little more patience to go on right.

    The ones labeled HIGH SHINE are not lacquers. They are alcohol based. That's why the rub off easily. That's also how they earned the nickname failclad. Also, I quit using the clear coats. The flat kept chipping off and taking paint with it. The gloss never seems to dry completely and can remain tacky for a month.
