  • Here are the chemicals I use in my silvering process.
    I purchased from Angel Gilding, linked below.
    angelgilding.co...
    The kit I show in this video.
    angelgilding.co...
    Smaller amounts of all the chemicals I show can be purchased individually and would be enough to chrome at least one person-sized costume (Threepio sized!) but possibly two whole suits if you don't make lots of mistakes (you probably will if it's your first attempt)
    Individual chemicals...
    Sensitizer
    angelgilding.co...
    2-Part silver
    angelgilding.co...
    Wetting agent.
    angelgilding.co...
    CLEAR COAT
    This is what I've been using with good results. Other 2k auto clearcoats should work to SO, if you have a favorite feel free to use that but it MUST be a catalyzed paint (paint with hardener)
    www.ebay.com/it...
    TINTS for clear coat.
    I've been using this. Angel Gilding sells tints now as well (The didn't when I started learning this technique)
    VIOLET (you'll need this for proper silver)
    angelgilding.co...
    GOLD
    www.tcpglobal.c...
    (That is what I've been using. HOWEVER, Angel Gilding now sells tints so similar products can be purchased from their site)

    I use to use that clear coat back in 2011. It actually laid smooth with high gloss. Cheap cost, not bad at all.

    liked the comment about autobody guys ,, I am a custom airbrush / painter besides collision repair... The clear that you're using is what's called a production clear which is made to mimic stock/factory finishes.... anything else that is "better" basically has more UV protectant & is actually not as clear as the cheaper production stuff...... SEM has awesome products & I will share with you that you can get the same type of concentrates from TCP global - they sell custom shop transparent candy concentrates for $20-$30/8oz.... you can got to coastairbrush & get even smaller amounts for $10 or so..... thought you'd like to know... awesome video.... I'm looking to do some chroming myself & don't want to buy a $5000 machine. thanks

      How is the flex in the finish 1 he is using?
      I’m painting a hood of a Polaris slingshot and the sides flex a lot at freeway speeds.
      Is there enough, or can you recommend a flex additive that will work?

    If the clear coat makes it look yellow does it really matter for the C3-Po suit as it is gold anyway? Maybe for the silver leg only no?

    • @BryanBabich
      @BryanBabich Před 8 lety

      +Toxicrafa No, its just for the silver chrome, I dont think this applies to 3PO.

    Excellent video!! I was just seeing videos doing this with no info. So here goes my question. I want to paint my wheels apple red candy with a chrome base. 1. I am guessing I can use this chemicals in allow wheels? 2. After creating the chrome finish should I let it get dry for hours or minutes before applying the candy color? 3. If you know where can I buy the candy color that will work with this chemicals please post the link. Thank you for your video again!!!

    Does the purple dye need to be added even if your planning to tint the project with any other shade of color?? ie blue, red, green etc. Also would love to see a video of the clearing process because no one has made on yet.
    Also how does the urethane clear stick over time to a slick/shiny part. I was brought up believing u first had to scuff before paint. Please advise.

    • @gordontarpley
      @gordontarpley  Před 8 lety

      +Jerry Scafidel Most likely. I've been looking into some mix ratios and would love to try and make my own solutions. If some time opens up I'll start experimenting. Definitely save some money in the long run.

    So basically, no naming of chemical compounds, just marketing lingo. There are way to many companies out there selling there version of chrome kits, for the greater populous not too know the "Secret" entirely.

    • @gordontarpley
      @gordontarpley  Před 8 lety +1

      +DarkLinkAD Fully agree. I've found some info on the actual chemicals deep in an automotive forum. If i still have it bookmarked I'll try and do a video on it. I'd love to mix my own from scratch. Probably save a hell of a lot of money in the long run.

    • @gordontarpley
      @gordontarpley  Před 8 lety +1

      That kit actually goes a really long way and is WAY cheaper than paying someone else, however, I'd bet if I was making the same amount of chemicals myself it would be less than $50.

      Exactly and coming from a regular joe standpoint, I dont want to chrome everything I own or start a business doing it. Im not as likely to spend that type of cash to convert a couple of doodads chrome, mabye my wheels (Which can be polished) or a plastic grill or an old Xbox controller. For $400, average joe would need to chrome his shoes, TV and coffee maker at that price. :P

    I've made all my own chemicals from scratch, based on the Tollen's mirror reaction, ... The onlt thing I am struggling with is the ''Wetting Agent'' it seems like a big secret on how they make it and no one who sells wetting agent will even tell you what chemicals are in there! So annoying!!

      Dave 24v I have worked with wetting agent before and have bought the one he is speaking about from Angel Gilding. It smells just like Apple Cider Vinegar. I was going to test with the vinegar but never came around to it. Maybe you should start there with Apple Cider Vinegar. Let me know if it works:)

      @gordontarpley  Před 4 lety

      @@stephenburns2081 it has to do with the way the rattle can paint dries. 2k clear cures as opposed to drying and keeps an extremely wet look that I've never seen matched with a rattle can clear.
