I just swapped my titanium bottle cage for a carbon one because it's a whole 48 grams lighter.

Bigger wheels and tyres means bigger frames and forks I suppose, but the additional material of going from 26in back in the days where superlight was king up to the bigger chunky 29in tyres must have added a decent amount of poundage.
I have a 15kg trail bike which I take to bike parks, love the short travel feel. I put a DH innertube and dh casing tyre mid ride, added around 1kg to the rear wheel and couldn’t tell the difference on trail, even for whips, 360s etc.
Yes Weight and comfort and durable are very importand i will be 40 this year and stil ride xc hardtails.

Number plates. I think all Haro sold up through the 80's came w/ a number plate, as a nod to it. Everyone I knew had a haro number plate. **Neil and Owen are great together. It's like mtb history trival pursuit.

It was minus 10° c yesterday and I went for a bike ride in my local woods on my XC bike with 100 mm travel and 2.3" tires.. Canadian Winter boys... British winter is fall here.
Yeah but our winter is also our summer , cold and dry is ok but constant wet and mud does your head in.

Used to ride a big old weighty enduro bike around, then I realised for 90% of my riding I just like riding trails all day, so I dropped down to a 140/160 trail bike at about 28lbs it's more comfortable to ride all day nearly as capable in everyway going down due to the 36. I don't really get the 38 forks they are super heavy and unless you are really big or really fast I can't tell the difference other than it's heavy in an awkward spot on the bike. So I do think for a lot of people they get pulled into the long travel enduro machine and it doesn't match most people's riding. Really happy with my change up. Definately made the right choice for me and ignored the media and looked for myself.
Going from a 2018 scott spark rc to a 2022 yeti sb 115 was a huge change, I could not believe how much heavier the yeti was. It really has not bother me at all while riding but lifting the bike onto the tailgate pad is really noticeable.
Tires in general. Frame reinforcement for swat box style holes in the frame. Generally 250g added to every carbon frame for warranty and safety. Carbon bars used to advertise 170g, now 220g is normal. Then 170 to 200mm droppers and 36+ stanchions on every trail bike. Weight is OK by me as long as it makes the bike hold up.
These to work well together as hosts.
I've been saying modern bikes have been getting porky for ages now, suspension travel isn't an excuse either, nor the tracks that we ride, my full carbon 2017 trek slash 9.8 weighed bang on 14kg with pedals, and that had 150 rear and 160 front, now the new one weighs a whopping 2kg more, its like in order to make more profit manufacturers have cut corners in the weight department, kind of like a ufc fighter not putting the effort in and missing weight.

Quiz answer: Haro's first product was number plates for BMX racing bikes. It was Preston Petty motocross plates but with custom decals.
This is a sore subject for me. It's understandable, like you said, that with the longer travel and beefer frame/equipment, mainstream mtn bikes have become heavier - particularly the lower spec ones. But, mid-thirty lbs? I purchased a SC Tallboy in 2010. It weighed 24-1/2lbs. I recently upgraded the fork and wheels to lower the weight a couple of pounds. There's nothing new on the market that's available for any reasonable amount of money that I'd want; except for the new light e-mtb like you mentioned. At 75 yrs. I'll probably want one of those eventually. I sold a full susp. e-mtb that weighed 53lbs. It was like riding a truck.
When I first got properly into MTB in around 2017 anything approaching 15kg was practically a tank. In fact my first full susser from Halfords was sub 15kg.
You mentioned bike weights and selling used bikes, but of course in two different conversations. I own a small shop, and personally have seen a HUGE weight difference in bikes. You talked about mid range to higher end downhill and ebikes, but what about bikes for people looking for entry level and midrange hard tails? That's where older bikes simply shine, especially if the mechanic has truly taken their time and did the work that is needed for a "used" bike. I think this season will be an interesting one, whether folks are buying new vs used. It's also time to listen to folks that are either getting back into the sport or are new cyclists, there needs to be more talk about entry level to midrange bikes for those folks...otherwise, we drive them away. As for me, lighter bikes are always better, and I would definitely sacrifice travel to save weight, and like to see lighter weight frames. Thanks for sharing!

I raced XC for years on light bikes in the 9-10.5 kg range, but they were hard tails, 100mm fork, no dropper post, 2.1-2.2 tires, 11-36 sprockets. Today’s race courses demand more bike just for XC racing. And when you look at “down-country” or short travel trail bikes, those stats are absurd. My new full suspension trail bike is 12.5kg (YT Izzo) and it is considered light. 😂
I bought a cube stereo action team 160 last week all nice spec's got 2k off rrp my first EMBT thanks to the channel I'm getting back into my biking! Hopefully it's fine at weekend as bit icy out! Just added frame wrap today and got my new Helmet something I've never worn before and nice new fox gloves! It's got 750w battery bosch smart system 85nm so dying to get out on it!
It depends how strong you are. I find heavy over suspended bikes hard to muscle around and overall a bit dull for my local.
Nothing wrong with getting stronger 💪🏼 after jibbing around on a full sus trail bike for a year, the hardtail feels like a bmx, light and flickable.

I think Hari's first products were bmx race number plates. Had some ads back in Skateboarder/Action Now magazines from the late 70's early 80's. Why don't MTB forks have boots for muddy conditions? Thanks Danny from Stawell Victoria Australia.
The Hydra was from old Greek mythology, and it was a monster that Hercules supposedly defeated. Every time he would cut off one of the heads, two more would sprout out in the only way he was able to defeat the monster was if he cut off the head and then immediately burned it.
Haro Factory Plates! (1978 - though I think he was making custom ones a couple of years earlier) - also the Saguaro is that big Cactus thing and there is a National Park in Arizona named after it. - and yes Neil - of course I knew the answer

My relatively new eBike weighed 60lbs when I got it. I've now been able to peel off 6 lbs with addition of ultra light SRAM eDrive train with a Wireless Reverb dropper , ENVE M7 carbon wheels and more pliable/lighter Vittoria 2.6 tires...
I love how a light bike feels underneath me, but being 265 lbs means i break light stuff very easily

My current bike, a 2019 Intense Tracer is about 31-32lbs with inserts. When I went to test ride the new 2023 version, it was 37lbs! I was, "What gives? Where's the weight coming from?" Sure, I have an air shock carbon wheels, bars and cranks, but I can't imagine that making a 5-6lb difference.
I'm thinking the frames must be heavier to compensate for the abuse that it's expected.

I got fed up slaving out ascents for short 2-3min runs. Sold my nukeproof 290 comp. Got a ripley af, never been happier. More trails now make more sense, and going up is back to being average.
Neil, Owen, Haro aka Bob Haro first made BMX Raceplates in his garage, which then launched Bob into the BMX Limelight to eventually become a world famous Freestlye rider. Haro then went into MTB’s in the 90’s great show by the way.
Fun fact: I have 1.35 kg Schwalbe tyres. You have to try it. Feels so much stable on descents.
Yes. I can eliminate 98% of possible purchases right off the bat. I like to climb to get to my descents. My new xc build is gonna be about 25 lbs. And contrary to popular belief most xc riders I know can descend rather well.
True. There are good bike handlers riding all types of bikes.
I usually ride my XC hardtail as it suits the terrain where I live. I have a trail full sus I use when I take trips up into the hills. It's a good few kilos heavier and the chunkier tyres make it a good workout, definitely notice the difference after a days riding! 🥵

My new Whyte 629 is somehow weighing in at 35lbs with spare tube etc and f&r fenders. My 2015 729 is 28lbs but with newer geo and wider wheels the new one is just as fast and good training for riding my lighter Tallboy when the sun shines
Commencal (Aluminum) in Oregon, USA - I like the solidness and love pedaling up & down hills
Carbon Fiber Canyon Neuron in Thailand - noticeably lighter, but would never go CF again - I'd take the heavier Aluminum any day
- lifting onto back rack and also into storage is where I really notice the weight
Defo worth thinking about weight for putting on the car roof - not just for lifting, but also spec limits.
Haro first made the BMX race plate.i believe he made them his self on his mother's kitchen stove with a little help from his dad. He no longer owns the company but is and was a brilliant designer and the nicest unassuming guy you will ever meet super super cool a true bmx legend.

Some of the increased weight is the change from 26 inch wheels and tires to 29. I don’t notice the weight much of my 34ish lb Norco Sight.

The only weight numbers I care about are tires. Gives you an idea about how durable the casing is.

Being 63 with buggered knees my Haibike has been a godsend……….until I get to a stye or locked gate, then the challenge begins !
32-33lbs has become the sweet spot for my Rallon and I. Anyone who actually pedals their bike and says 38+ lbs is good is outta their minds!

I did see a video about an insanely light road bike. Like 4 kilos. They guy said it actually didnt ride very well. Suitable for a hill climbing race maybe.
I don't worry about weight too much. Bikes are heavier because what we do on them is so much more demanding. I accept the weight increase because bikes are tuffer now.
I'm influenced by biking folk law stating that lighter is better; actually my own experience around my xc/trail type riding is that I can't feel a real world difference , even after swopping my light summer wheels/tyres setup for my slightly heavier winter wheels & tyres on my Atherton 130.

My Intense mtb seemed happier at 30-32lbs, compared to its starting weight of 28 lbs. pretty much due to the tires and Tannus Armour inserts. My 1993 Trek 7000 got dialed down to 21lbs, but it transferred EVERYTHING back to me, so no more weight weenie mentality for me. Durability, stability and value are where my mindset is at for bike parts/ components.
Thats interesting. Ive always had the opposite effect. My bikes felt better lighter. But Im guessing you might be doing more hardcore trails.
My focus Jam is hefty and you do feel the sluggishness on climbs. Compared to yt Capra I used.

I have two vintage hardtails that’s 25 and 26 pounds (homegrown and f400). Two old Jekylls that are around 28 pounds. Yet my expensive hardtail is 33 pounds. Lol😅

Weight and momentum is a big deal. I ride a lot of flat trails so lighter is better for me. But I had a 2004 Trek Team Dh that weighed more than 45 pounds and had six inches of travel in the back and eight in the rear and that thing. It truly felt like it would snap my head back with acceleration when I let go of the brakes on the steep stuff.
My experience since 1986, I know I'm an old guy😅 is the following: In 1996 my Cannondale SV700 had about 12,5kg. This was not lightweight for its time. The change from 26 to 27,5" wheels added about 2kg to the average bikes. Bigger forks, longer handlebars, dropperposts, long cache derailleurs, big casetts and the second jump to 29" wheels made the bikes fat as most people.😢 Maybe the bike industriy wants bikers buying e-bikes, because they make more profit?!
My Enduro bike weighs 40lbs 4oz (18.3kg).
It's literally insane when you have to hike a bike up something.

@CoderShare I'm just giving you shit. Where I live only the most elite cross country riders can make it up most of our steep single-track. 3 to 5 mile grueling climbs with 2000-3000 feet of elevation gain. Most of us wind up walking our bikes up sections of the trail anyway.

Weight cutting means f'all to me, where I ride it's rough on bikes add lack of skill and loads of determination and you end up with loads of broken parts so I build my bikes with strength in mind, I can save weight every ride morning by taking a dump 😅
My aluminum hardtail GT Zaskar LT 29 expert weight more than 14 kg and I am absolutely OK with that.

Hairow 😆 "har-ow" he made custom number plates for local racers in California in the 70's. Ive heard it was to fund one of his other passions (racing motorcycles).

I like a lighter bike but not that bothered really. Of course newer bikes are getting heavy, longer frames, bigger wheels and tyres, inserts, dropper posts all add up weight.
I don't think enduro bikes are at similar weights to SL E-bikes. If we compare the Specialized Enduro with the Kenevo SL we see that the weight difference is around 4kg. And the same applies if we compare Enduro bikes with SL Enduro E-Bikes from other brands, we see similar weight differences like in Specialized.
Bob Haro made Pegs/fork sanders first. I think. Instill have my '87 Haro Master BMX bike
DH bikes are lighter and more jittery, so weights may also be compensating for most riders using mullet set ups.

My steel 3x 26" 2002 Orange p7 weighs 13kg My Ali 1x 29" 2021 Specialized Chisel weighs 12kg. Surely with loss of so much drive train and lighter material it should be lighter by more than a kilo🤷♂️

The KTM flags could be for their mountain bikes and e-bikes. As there is a GasGas sticker as well. Maybe they own an e-bike as GasGas make them.

#ASKGMBNTECH hello, im gathering parts to do my very first project bike that i wonna build from the frame up. I was wondering if there is a grease i can use to do the compleet build, or do i need multiple specific greases? I am fond a brand you guys used to know, and the have a copper compound and a bio grease. If i compare them, they seem to be used for the same purpose, but they are different aswel. This is very confusing for me as a noob

The stupid high pivot systems are adding weight for virtually no significant gain over a traditional suspension system.
Gonna offset the extra weight on the climbs by losing some kg body weight 😁

Then why have a stiff carbon frame and alloy wheels, and it's too "light" and you want different effect. Go alloy frame, thinner wall and tuned for "give". And carbon wheels that are better rollers... Also rider weight and how they ride it, and mentality, is key... I'm a 250ish, tall, aggressive type with plenty momentum DH. And OTB ideas about bike design.
My HARO BMX number plate made my bike super cool and fast, not so much for me.
