Production costs are probably cheaper to have similar frames between ebikes and regular bikes. When frames are so similar, the engineering is also re-used so less re-calculatuons of fork travel, handling geo, etc.

Strava segments are getting killed for sure.
It is automaticly set on ebike rating so Ibdont understand your point. I am quite new on strava so maybe I did not realize yet that people would cheat like that.
Segments have been ruined since ebikes arrived on the scene. I (as do many others) only use Stava to save routes and fitness data.. the segment times mean nothing anymore because people cheat.
(And I don't own an ebike btw... yet 😂)
@@dirtyoffroader2093 that is a shame. On the segments where I ride we have quite a big ebike competition group. I would not even consider cheating. Why would one do that. Thats lame.

Agree that Strava segments have become completely ruined. I think the issue is that people are lazy and don’t change their ride to show it’s been done on an e bike. I ride an e bike and it’s set up so that my rides automatically save as an e mtb ride, it’s not difficult! I want to assess my segments against other e bike riders and not against naturally aspirated riders.
You two covered a lot. I never heard of an acoustic bike. Good way to express it, except for it makes my plain road bike sound fretless. Sure if an eMTB could weigh less than your average MTB, then that could be worth it. Such as the Rotwild 275 SL at 16 kilos. Of course I am more of the low mainenance type so the Zerode with the Pinion gearbox and the Gates belt for me please. I agree that if I have an electric bike, I would of needs sometimes run it acoustic style. And while we talk about this stuff let's not forget that people in tough places still use their bikes like workhorses, loading them down in all manner of ways just to make ends meet.

E-MTB, even lightweight E-MTB would never fully replace acoustic MTBs just from a price perspective alone, as an E-MTB will always be more expensive. I can definitely see them heavily cannibalising higher end bikes though.
For example, if I had to pick between a Fuel EXe 8 or Levo SL Expert and a top spec Fuel EX 9.9 or Stumpy EVO S-Works, the only real sacrifice I'm making is frame storage and a bit of weight, and in return I can literally half my climbing time. Seems like a good trade-off to me.
I agree - and I think it's telling that all the high-end [non assisted] bike manufacturers have been slashing the prices of their top-spec bikes recently... why would you spend $8-10K on a non-assisted bike, when you can get pretty much the same suspension, brakes etc. on a bike with a motor too? Unless you absolutely want (because no-one actually needs) electronic shifting and a wireless dropper post, I think we're going to see a lot more modest spec (and correspondingly affordable) non-assisted bikes in future.
No they won't replace anything. Mtb it's a sport and people wanna practice it. Those guys with expensive bikes can afford e-mtbs, but they still choose to buy motorless bikes
I think brands have similar looks between acoustic and electric bikes because they developed geometry and linkage designs that work on either acoustic or electric.
"Acoustic bike"? MTB are no more bicycles or normal bicycles ? I thought that eMTB were electric motor bicycles or motorbikes, whereas MTB bicycles. Things might be different today.
You don't call it an acoustic screwdriver.
To be fair, there was no such thing as the acoustic guitar until the electric guitar was invented, so there is some precedent for the name.
And if you think an electric-assist bicycle is the same as a motorcycle, you've obviously never ridden a motorcycle.

Silent hubs are nice sometimes - I have one on my Redline Monocog 29 and it is extra stealthy with no chain flappage.
I also enjoy the dual clickity clicks from the crankset and the freehub on my Giant Trance X E+ 29r

If your not a weight weenie and dont like the idea of tubeless, just take the valve core out of your innertube and put some sealant in it. Then run it like normal. Been doing it on my beach cruiser ebike to get to the beach for like 2000km on the same tube. (But im all for tubeless on mountain bikes 😅)

Manufacturers are making e-bikes look more like mountain bikes to try to entice people who would be embarrassed to be seen on an e-bike to buy them.
Unless these ebikes are going to cost $1500 they aren't replacing anything

Seeing middle age men like me soing emtb is actually fine, young men on emtb i guess its fine but young men on analog are good in trails they are so fast and good keep the youth energy and emtb for middle to old men to keep up hahaha...
I doubt if anyone with a big enough bank account to be able to afford an EMTB would have that fragile of an ego to be embarrassed riding one..

Hi, I have kona honzo esd. I love riding it in all elements but i don't like the cleaning and drivetrain parts wearing out constantly. I would like to get rohloff hub but i dont like their 4 bolt mout for for brake rotors. Is there any way that I could get or have an adapter made to use 6bolt rotors?

That could be one way of looking at it! But even the smallest change in geometry/shape requires big changes in the production 🤔

Simple answer is no. as many riders don't want a e-Bike at least not as main bike due to the motors failing, if something breaks it requires an e bike mechanic to fix and to not void warranty But who wants to swap a motor or repair it. I don't remember if it was Bosh or Brose.
But reliability probably has improved. But I saw a video on a Specialized authorized shop, the guy had to wait a while for a replacement motor, as it simply wore out.
Also saw another video about a motor where it had some sort of seal that just trapped gunk, and was not really a seal. I don't remember what it was.
I am 50 now.. And I am new to this sports, just ordered S-work Epic Evo. It's all because dragging along the Stumpjumper Alloy(36LB) isn't cutting it.
Despite I am not in ideal physic but no matter how much I try the weight of the bike is the biggest obstacle now. When I get 60 the e-bike will be the
route I might take. Current 40-50 year old riders eventually turn head to e-bike.
Why they call MTB "acoustic MTB" i checked in english dictionary for "acoustic" and its only music / sound related term. Just stick to MTB and eMTB.

Question:
I have a 2020 Stumpjumper (Troy Lee Designs) that came stock with a Fox DHX2 coil rear shock. Yesterday I lost all dampening and it’s now leaking oil. It’s been ridden once a week over the last year and a half so it’s not too heavily used. It’s making a knocking noise too. Has anyone had any experience with this? Do I need new seals already 🤔 I’ve heard some stories of this shock not being compatible with the Stumpy frame, we contacted Specialized but they said to contain Fox 🙃 Any advice?

good geo, lots of room in the front triangle for bottle or frame bag.
Cons:
The dropper post routing is horrible, the cable goes near the shock stanchion, which is always a bad idea, cable on the shock mount too, so I suspect rubbing, noises, and wear might happen. For this to work,the cables can't move much. If they do they will rub, so that means wear.
The internal routing is inconvenient ,not user friendly at all, overcomplicated when not needed.
4:50 all in one stem and bar combo is not ideal if you need to change rise.
5:22 The internal headset routing of course. I hate it, mechanics hate it, consumers hate it.
I have yet to see an ebike that isn't ugly. I don't like the hidden shocks either. Shocks are cool. Keep them out where I can see them. That Knolly looks awesome 👌.
only upside is not having to clean them. But as always: Fashion over Function!

I think they are making emtb and mtb more alike for cost of production and maybe using the same molds with some tweaks?

Looking like an eeeb must be for production reasons. 1 frame, without the battery & motor loads of storage. Or you could retrofit a motor if you brought it acoustic
#AskGMBNTech I have a 2022 Polygon T7 with 780mm bars, 35mm stem, and the RS Recon fork is 42mm offset. Can I get some of the GMBN team's opinions on what a change to 51mm Marz Z1 would be like?
Its definitely ebikes looking or sharing sizes of acoustic bikes, a lightweight ebike doesnt look or feel bulky, fits on most car carriers and is easier on the eye.
Clearly there is an aesthetic evolution. Early generation EMTBs can be pretty ugly, it isn't remarkable that they have changed. Also it isn't surprising that battery and motor advancement can produce useful performance and longevity at ever smaller and lighter levels. General bike feel and performance (geometry, weight distribution, etc., etc.) should also improve, hopefully. I don't think an XC bike is going to resemble an EMTB with a 900Wh battery anytime soon, but I will be happy when battery technology gets that good.
Chunky frames give the opportunity for internal storage 😊 I think it's a bit like when they started using "oversized" tubing on mtbs in the 90s... just an evolution of the aesthetic, and for the better in my opinion.
I think there’s too many stubborn (and cheap, like myself) bikers to get rid of regular bikes.

It might be all down to the manufacturing of parts as to why both bikes are similar & looking chunky.

Not an ebike hater I just don't need/want one but the lower design on an analog bike i don't like, the bottom tube coming out of the crank - y shaped! If it's for lower center of gravity I guess it makes sense but I don't like the look
I agree, increasingly recent designs now have the down tube coming forward [ie. protruding in front of the chainring] and then up, rather than simply in a straight line to the head-tube... However, as you surmise - this is often in conjunction with having the shock and linkage mounted much lower (to lower the centre of gravity) and horizontally above the bottom bracket, so the frame needs to be that shape to accommodate it.
I really don’t see the point is light weight e bikes, they cost the same as normal full weight E bikes and have like Half the power (Heckler/Heckler SL). I think if your gonna get an E bike, get the one that will last the longest and goes the fastest.
I agree... you can always turn the assistance level down on a higher-powered bike if you want more range/more of a workout.

I do like these Emtb's, but manufacturers seriously want to work on reducing the cost before the weight. With the prices of some of these things you could literally take a 3 day motorcycle course, do your test, buy a motorbike and helmet etc and insure it!
The thing is that even regular bikes are expensive. It's bikes in general. You can get the ebike equivalent for almost the same price. Not the SL but those will eventually come down too. You can get a lot of the entry level emtbs for 4k. A Trance 2 retails at like almost 3k...
People who bring up motorcycles are missing the point. These are very different machines. I don't buying high a quality MTB because that's my jam. I don't care for motorcycles.
@@dracorosso7129 I ride both, which is why I can make the comparison. If I can buy an offroad motorcycle for less than an EMTB that has less tech, it makes me question why the mtb costs so much.
I'm in a position where years of mtb abuse has pretty much ruined my knees, so cycling can be brutal even on a good day, so an EMTB would be ideal. But when I know I can literally buy a motocross bike for half the price of the ebike that I'll probably not even be able to get parts for 5 years from now, then where's the incentive?
@@KuroSanArtsThe main reason for me why an emtb is preferable to an off road motorbike is the fact you can ride it anywhere you can ride a normal mtb. It is really limiting where you can legally ride an off road motorbike.
I have a normal mtb, an emtb and a motorbike. If I had to keep just one it would be the emtb for sure, it’s a huge amount of fun.
@@KuroSanArts I can see more of the world on a ebike. My cheap letrick XP premium can do fireroads and gravel paths and my commute to work. I will be getting an eMTB so I can do more laps in my local trail system during my lunch break. :)

It seems like the bike industry is sort of meeting in the middle with designs, in order to sell more of both, since most major brands offer both acoustic and Ebike options. Simple math
They want less molding and production variations, it's about cutting corners and raising the price. This industry is a shit sandwich
@@LaurentiusTriarius it’s a business like any other business. You appeal to the widest audience possible and you increase your business. Regardless of how similar the designs might be, they still have to make different molds and different jigs to accomplish different frames.

I wouldn't be surprised if they are attempting to marry the two frame shapes so in the future they only have to manufacture one frame in two options, electric and acoustic. They can cut down the number of new frame molds they have to make by half this way. I hope I'm wrong

Dear presenters and employees of Gmbn, Embn, Gmbn Tech. I've been following your channel for over two years now, and I think it's generally good content. However, I would like to offer some mild criticism on a few things. For example, I think it is a shame that a lot of people look from the eyes of professionals and competition riders about what kind of videos are made. there are more amateurs for whom it doesn't matter which tires, brakes or even bicycle you use to cycle down a mountain a few seconds faster. Or how to make your bike lighter (while your colleagues at GCN, GTN have long shown that having more power in your legs makes more of a difference than the weight of the bike and rider). And installing tubeless tires or cycling with inserts for extra safe landing after a jump without puncture. Great for the pros, but I think there are better solutions on the market for most mountain bikers. Most mountain bikers don't even get that far off the ground and are not even well trained, so why do they have to have a pro bike with overpriced pro parts? Consider creating content that is more appropriate for average amateur mountain bikers. I think of, for example, testing different mudguards because it is strange that after many years of mountain biking, the image is still that after every mountain bike ride you have to look as if you have rolled through the mud. Or test whether having a side stand really has so many disadvantages when you go mountain biking. With something like this, you certainly don't have to throw your beautiful bike in the mud if you want to enjoy the view of the mountain you just climbed. And also whether a tubeless set up is really the most convenient one to have when you go on trips as an amateur mountain biker. For example, consider a Tannus Armor with an inner tube, there are people who have ridden the Mega Averlanche with this without a puncture. I also ride this myself after trying tubeless for years, but I like this system much better, it is simpler and safer than a standard tubeless set up. I haven't had a puncture in two years. The only disadvantage is that it can be a fraction heavier, but I think this is negligible for most (especially on an e-bike). I know this is poison for the ears of professionals, ex-professionals and people who want to become professionals, but this is the majority of mountain bike buyers in the world. I understand, I used to think the same thing about it, but there have been so many improvements in all areas that this image seems a bit outdated. Mountain biking is a sport where you can buy the same bikes as the best professional cyclists in the world, which is a bit ridiculous because most of us don't need this, and this also contributes to making the bikes unnecessarily expensive. Even with the most expensive parts, most of us are not fast enough to keep up with a pro and put a pro on a cheaper bike with inner tubes, mudguards and a side stand and he or she will still be faster than the regular mountain biker. In short, help the bike industry paint a more realistic picture and create more content for the everyday mountain biker who wants to enjoy riding in the woods, and not just look at what the pros do as if it is best for everyone. Hmmm, I am also just a normal guy who loves my bikes. Some of the points you make have also gone thru my mind. However, I enjoy exactly what you criticize. I like seeing the new, expensive, light stuff that I don't really need. I enjoy the tech tips... I du think the industry has lost its mind with bikes over 10,000. But I think GMBN has a lot of content comparing all kinds of stuff. I get your point, but I would say, GMBN should keep up the good work.

Nah, Scotts have always been on the wide side of their tubing, even road bikes. Far beyond that side, to be precise.
The simple thing is cost, e bikes are still expensive , durability of parts, I know i run a Orbea Rise.

hopefully, motorbikes will take away dentists from mountain biking and will focus brands' rnd there. hopefully mtbs wont have rnd pricing and and will go cheaper as motorbikes prices skyrocket.
Why would I want a bio/analogue/non-E/acoustic MTB to look like an e-MTB?
that would deprive me of all the kudos I am getting from e-bikers, hikers etc. for pedaling up that steep uphill without battery power!

I actually struck the Scott Spark off my shortlist when shopping for a trail fully because it looked too e-bikish.
News flash - nobody else really cares what you're riding up a hill.
@@jmo2752 are you kidding? I've been mtb'ing 20+ years. In the past 2 years, I've got more complements and kudos for using my bike on trails & climbs instead of an e-bike, than I have all the past 18 years combined. Really, people out on the trails, hikers, other riders, joggers and even people on horses appreciate the bike over an ebike (at least in my areas).

But yes, on a 15% incline I am not exactly "flying by" (or manage to keep a relaxed face).
I don't need that, but it is nice and motivating nonetheless. On at least one of the longer inclines on my home trail I obtained my current PR after such a remark, so it seems to even have a measurable effect.
@@grummbeerbauer3527 yes - fwiw. I think this conversation illustrates how we all ride for different reasons - be that a workout or simply for fun. There is no right or wrong way, just as there is no right or wrong bike as long as it's helping us enjoy our ride.
If they make light weight emtb run as long as standard, have tye power of one too, they might just. ATM tho, no

Maybe overtime yes. I personally don’t want one till I can’t manage on my own, but I think it’s inevitable. There are lots of lazy people.
I don't think it's lazy - the majority of eMTB riders are either older (and not necessarily unfit, simply more able to afford a more expensive bike) and coming back into the hobby, and feel that if they are able to spend $5K on a bicycle, then it might as well be a pedal assist one too... Or are riders who are looking to ride more challenging terrain (climbs) which unless you are very young and fit, would be impossible (or at least not much fun) to try and climb without some assistance?

@@45graham45 sure, but if you've not been riding all your life, then getting out there is a lot easier if you have some assistance - at least to begin with... and you can always adjust the amount of assistance you use, once you start to get fitter.
I'd also suggest that the majority of these 'anti eMTB' comments are coming from riders in the UK (where GMBN are based)... and with the greatest of respect, there are not many proper mountains there, and any elevation changes are a few hundred feet at most... Once you start riding in the Alps, or anywhere in the west of the USA for example, your are hacking up many thousands of feet elevation each time you want to get to a decent downhill - hence the popularity of eMTBs in those riding areas.

I have to laugh every time I hear the new term "Acoustic" bikes. As a full time professional guitar player, with electric guitars and acoustic guitars, it just seems like such a strange term for the cycling world to take.😅

@@sjaan7370 Makes no sense. It's not even a metaphor. Ebikes are not digital & manual bikes are not related to sound. Electric / manual are correct terms to use. There is no advantage to using any other innacurate terms which only make the user look uneducated & unknowledgeable. Electric / acoustic are terms with guitars because of the sound generation & digital / analogue are terms related to electronics because of the circuit output characteristics. Those terms have nothing to do with push bikes.

Not until you can get a quality FS e-bike for less than 2K.
Not until there is support for the used bike market and getting batteries etc... to fix a bike.
Parents will only pay so much for a bike and when you have to pay out of pocket they are too expensive.
Used and second hand bike support is never happening. And is nearly dead for non-ebikes too. Out of warranty = good as dead.

@@SwordFighterPKN Have you bought them in past 2-3 years? I do indeed wrench on my bikes, and can say the modern designs fall apart too soon and ask for too many proprietary parts and specialized tools. And standard components wear out at a higher rate. Freshly built bikes don't scream quality too, when you do the first service and find bodged up bearing seats and other mating surfaces.
Of course we are not on the level of cellphones and not likely to reach that integration ever, but sadly the trend is here.
But most importantly we talk service and manufacturer support. Very few, mostly small and race-oriented companies are willing to offer replacement or share service documents.

Yep. Kids growing up on E bikes. The character building, mental strength aspect and doing more than the norm attitude is going away.
Someone once told me having fun only gets you so far. Hard work can make you exceptionally great and nothing more fun than that.

Oh boy, here we go again. As far as I agree that kids don't need* ebikes, it is nothing about character building. Modern public schools are nowhere near the standards of Victorian and Edwardian era boarding schools. And they make better people. You can argue that kids nowadays got soft and whiny, but it's actually the adults.
But most importantly, having a motor (electric or petrol) doesn't take away the hard work. Both in terms of fitness and skill.
*because they can be motivated to ride and learn things as easily on any bike. And if their dad is an XC salbutamol crackhead, no ebike would help them keep up anyway
But the thing we really should adress is that kids are not growing up with any bike at all for quite a while already. Mountainbiking is rather picked up as a midlife crisis hobby now
I go to the gym to work out and ride bikes to go downhill. Sorry that doesn't fit your perception of what mountain biking should be.. I'm sure, you'll never use a lift at the bike park either right? Nah, you're mountaineering the backside of the mountain with ropes and climbing gear with a bike on your back cause you gotta work for it!
