Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world's most hated audio tools. Today we are going to talk about the Roland JP-8080. Is this classic digital 90s VA synth pioneer and rack synth / desktop synth sibling of the Roland JP-8000 keyboard just good for the legendary trance sounds and 90s rave cliches or can we coax some timeless tones out of it?
Thanks To Ingo from Bad Ischl and Ken Hayakawa for lending me this beautiful JP:

lets do the toraiz sp-16.
I don't know if you've done a dedicated Volca Bass video, didn't see one in a search, but that'd be cool.
Novation Supernova/Supernova2/Nova Laptop could be the an idea for VA synths next, or even better, 90s VA synths shootout
Please tell me you know about Lorenzo Senni !! he used that gear
Bad gear dude, are you ever going to do a review of Roland V-Synth or even better the V-Synth XT rack?
The jams on this channel are always worth the price of admission
Like priceless;)
@@AudioPilz😁
I'm just here for the genre names.
They should become shorts or TikTok thingies
That's rude.... it's free to watch so you are saying they are worth nothing?
(I know you don't mean that, I am just being stupid.)
You may be an impressive synth lord, but you're a top notch meme wizard
He certainly is
I can't keep up with his memes. His clips are 8-10 min long, but they become near 20 min with me due to stopping and replaying the memes. And they're always hilarious.
Thank you so much!!!
Humor ≠ Meme. I would just like to point out that I don’t follow meme culture or even look at memes (bc its mind numbing trash) and I got every single joke and nuance w without referencing any memes. I even went back and researched what I may have been missing. Nothing. Unless you stop following meme culture and using it to interpret reality at every instance you might as well just unplug your ISP and exclusively watch cable news on dish tv like a boomer or something bc you would probably, ironically be be more informed at this point. This is what internet culture is doing to people. Memes are supposed to be references to cultural familiarities, but here we are perceiving culture as a reference to a meme… which itself was a reference to begin with? Tf bro. Does anyone even think anymore or do anything without a meme to reference for programming? Wait, this is a talent? Lol. How terrifying.
@@elliottpollock8550 there might be a few meta layers involved;)
The effort you put in editing each and every second of your video is just mind blowing! Great content keep it up!!!
Thank you so much!!!
Absolutely mind blowing, agree. Jokes themselves deserve separate channel.
yeah I eventually end up pausing and rewinding to see all of the puns inside so every bad gear last at least double length to me. And the tracks produced out of a current gear is astounding as ever.
@@ambientoccluser I know what you mean!! I sit with my hand hovering over the pause button so I can fully appreciate the memes.
It's great to see a Bad Gear about my favorite synth of all time.
Always a pleasure!!!
bad gear?
Yea, I've got one and I love it!
I feel like the more popular the 8080 gets the more underrated it gets
Back in 1999/2000 made many nice tracks with this unit. Honestly can't find any flaws in the way this synth performs, it solved so many automation problems in a time when computers were slow and VSTi's were still in their infancy. The quality is still outstanding, even 23 years later. The Roland development team were on fire when they created this beast of a synth. Thanks for this wonderful trip down memory lane :)
Nice!!!
It is still regarded as the greatest synth of all time, and that’s for a true reason(s)…
@@Quant-Beat It's a wonderful synth. It was perfect for those of us who didn't truly realise the significance of the Jupiter 8, I could have purchased a 12 bit Jupiter 8 for £1000 at the time but I was young and stupid. Didn't buy it because I thought it was old and didn't have MIDI. What a spaz!
@@jamessisson3703 It lacked MIDI? :)
I cracked up when the face of Nick Batt appeared with the PWM !
Classic!!!
I picked up a used JP8000 a few years ago and it has become one of my favorite synths to gig on. You can actually get this thing to sound like an old Oberheim with some really warm pads and leads. Great for those Lyle Mays synth sounds.
Nice!!!
I love this channel
Your humor , the references, clips, photos and the cadence of the videos are a work of art.
I really dig the music too.
Thank you so much!!!
how can someone hate the JP8080? this is a classic and one of my favorite vintage digital synths
It seems to be a love/hate thing
I agree, it is great for ambient stuff, and not only for trance supersaw
It's expensive and has a fairly limited tone. There's tons of other VAs which can do a lot more. They just don't have the interface. When people spend a lot of money on something it sets expectations high. There's a lot of units out there with worn out pots because of the sort of people who used these units.
"Limited Tone" What did you expected about it ? Turn up the Vocooder and hear Whitney Houston?
The most powerful sounding Bad Gear intro ever!
😀
@@AudioPilz I am watching your all reviews and two days ago I was playing your intro tune unconsciously on a Yamaha pss270!
I lusted after this synth for years, and there is still a part of me that wants one. Your video has semi re-ignited my desire. Great work as usual.
Thank you!!!
Another super fun show! Thanks for what you do.
Thank you so much!!!
Oh, memories…. Loved the jam at the end
Hey David, thanks! Nice to have you around!!!
every time one of these videos comes out it makes me want another synth, which is kinda counterintuitive for a series called "bad gear"
Bad Gear GAS is a thing;)
You make my fridays brighter with each and every episode
Have a nice one!!!
Bro this was so good. Great video! I love the sound of that synth, it was my childhood!
Thank you so much!!!
Cool episode about a wonderful machine! Since you are already in the VA realm, an episode about the Virus can’t be far away 😅
Thanks!!! I recently failed to find enough hate on the Virus B😥
@@AudioPilz at some point, that’s a good thing of course 😂 Keep it up with those cool vids!
@@AudioPilz I had a Virus Classic, which is the Virus B in new clothes. Never got on with it and sold it with no regrets. Listened to a single oscillator and thought it sounded very thin, seems it works best at pads where you can combine three oscillators and FX, but it's limited when it comes to real fat bass and lead sounds. I have two Alesis Ions instead now, much better.
I had an Indigo 2, I thought that was too trancy and too many sounds lol
I’ve finally done it! After 2 (maybe 3) years of faithfully watching this channel I finally see one of my very own pieces of *BAD GEAR* in an episode! I might cry!
The Digitakt isn't that bad.
@@Slackboy72 Huh? I own a JP-8080.
Wow, that took you quite a while?;)
Friday never comes round quick enough, great work as always!
Thank you!!!
The editing on this channel is so good. Not to mention how catchy the songs are and all the one liners thrown in.
Thank you so much!!!
I got a jp8080 gifted from a friend for building the acoustics in his new studio! And man I love that synth! :D
Wow, that's a great remuneration for that!
@@vjreimedia Yup, he was also really happy with the treatment I made for his new studio aswel as a lot of other things.
I also repair broken equipment for him and do other tech related stuff from time to time.
And he wasn't really using it anymore and knew I lusted after one.
Nothing wrong with this one! Fantastic jams, as usual 👍
Thank you!!!
Such a distinctive sound, great ajms as ever and such a fun video. Probs my favourite channel! Happy Friday everyone! Ty Mr Pilz
Thank you!!!
Guaranteed hilarious vids for any muso. Full marks!
Thank you!!!
it's not a show. it's an educational series ❤
❤️❤️❤️
I love my 8080 and I love this channel, never thought I would see them together! Should be interesting.
Thank you!!!
Thanks for this - I have the JP8000. Well done as usual.
Thanks!!!
The sounds is rather iconic! And the DnB jam was on point:)
Thank you!
Wow, been waiting for this one.
Thanks! I hope it was worth the wait!!!
@@AudioPilz yes it was very good... played with one alot at the end of the 90's, always felt that it much better than the JP8000. Definitely shined a light on much of its strengths & weaknesses.
Thank You!
Flippin' HEALTHY jams this week man x
Thanks!!!
Good job! Great Review! Greetings from Brasil
Obrigado!!!
Happy Friday Florian!!
Awesome pick this week! I have the JP-8000 myself (my favorite piece of gear actually) . Always wanted the rack mount version.
Thanks!!! Have a nice one too!
If there's one synth I want to see re-issued or as a boutique its this one. Seeing as Roland are going through the decades with the boutiques it makes sense that this will be next!
A boutique would make total sense here
Oh man, that second jam was amazing. Honestly one of my favorites you've done. It's a shame it wasn't a full track!
Thank you so much! Extended jams can be found on Patreon (shameless plug;)
Bless you, brilliant, waited for this one xxx
Thank you so much!!!
I love the sounds of this synth. Great songs also!
Thank you!
I LOVED my JP-8080! Awesome sounds but easy to lose the sweet spot
Agreed!
This is an awful synth imo.
@@reginaldbowls7180 *nobody: This is an awful synth imo. *music industry: talk to the hand.
jp8000 was my first synth. still love it. the stock presets are mostly awful. jp8080 has good bass, sharp filter, good fx, nice arp, classic design.
@@Roman-tc6zl the stock presets are mostly awful mostly everywhere especially when geer comes from the past.
certain skills and an approach are needed to fully master this tool. Year or more. It is very flexible and not only for edm.
Heck yeah! Thanks man! Have a great weekend!
Have a nice one too!
i cant believe you really did it!!! thank you man ❤❤ love from ny ❤❤
Thank you so much!!!
Loving the video, as usual! The JP-80X0 is the one synth I really miss. Easy to dial in, sits really well in a mix (in contrast to it’s Virus-brothers I had) and it just sounds really good for the music I tried to make. Distorted and detuned saws, wide pads, damn you and your brilliant videos, now you’ve done it again. It’s Ebay-time. Even though I don’t use hardware anymore, I’ll tell my wife I bought it for my daughter.
Thanks!!! You're a good father;)
SuperSAW - one of the most powerful and energetic voices.
Big fan here!
great video! Can't look away with every second of goodness. I can't imagine how many hours of work go into each of your videos!!
Thank you so much!
Gosh I love the name always of your 3rd mix and video edits, your one for the back rooms still haunts my dreams
Thank you so much!!!
This thing used to be such a dream synth for me - I'd still be tempted if prices were reasonable. Great jams as always!
Thanks!
ALL TIME FAVORITE VA. the sound of Deadsy
Deadsy for liiiiiiife!
👍👍👍
This being my first synth, I totally took this thing for granted but it was never ever unappreciated. Still got mine after all these years (99')
I think that's one for the pension fund then;)
Another brilliant episode
Thank you!!!
At this point, if Roland bring out a real box ticking winner of a synth you're going to have to take a good portion of the credit lol
P.s. Can you animate Nick B's face to modulate with the pulse width?
Thanks!!! Isn't that what we have AI for?😂😂😂
They have many
Great music, thanks for this great episode 👍 it's hard to get the bad parts of this synth if your are familiar to the roland stuff and I like the plastic sound of it
Thank you!!!
Uuuuh! Yet another legend! I am confident the community will "appreciate" this 😆
No horse heads in my bed yet;)
I haven´t seen the video yet, but the choice of weapon justifies a 😍🤩😍🤩😍 already.
❤️❤️❤️
Nice. I've owned 4 of these over the years, two of each version. Currently still have a JP8000 in my setup.
Wow, that's one for the pension fund;)
Whats with the prices now... not even 9years ago i bought one for 500eur, then later sold it for 400eur. And was in perfect condition * shrugs * ppl trying to make money out of fanboys ?
Can I ask why you decided to keep the/a jp8000 instead of the jp8080?
My guess is that you are a keyboard player (?)
@@ThizOne I think it is because I had the JP8000 first as bought it when I worked in a music store when they came out. I missed the controls like the ribbon and mod/pitch bend, etc The JP-8080 always felt a bit cramped by comparison as well. And the extra 2 note poly was not an issue for me and I never liked the vocoder. Though, I really still rate the JP-8080 and cannot really fault it. Just trying to nitpick... LOL
@@guitarbombdotcom Fair Enough 🙂
How long do you research all the video clips and memes? You have so much variety and everything is always on point and hilarious lmao
Keep up the hard work! The series is right on the line between super informative content and entertainment, which is a hard thing to nail. The jams are always super cool too. I'm hooked.
Thank you!!! I usually have one week per episode;)
Today’s my birthday. New episode of Bad Gear is just a perfect present ❤
Every Friday is a little birthday really
Happy birthday!!!
@@AudioPilz 😭😭😭😭😭 thank you
Merry x-mas, great sound and tracks
Thank you!!!
Dude, I have the JP-8000 and was waiting for this episode!!!! I knew it was coming soon. I love mine!!!! Great jams btw!!
Thank you so much!!!
so its bad gear?
@@randydarklight Nope, for some analoge junkies maybe.
I’m fortunate enough to own a JP-8080 with the SmartMedia card. It’s a great synth! It always had a rep for trance sounds, but don’t sleep on that formant filter. It’s terrific. It also does a better TB-303 than the actual 303 (heresy, I know).
Nice!!!
this channel is crazy, really good bro !
Thank you!!!
Best intro in a long time!
Thank you!!!
I would have expecterd at least a couple of Scooter memes along this video for this synth.
haha, me too!
Damn, what a missed opportunity!!!
This is definitely one of the best sounding synths you've featured on this channel. If they weren't so expensive, I'd definitely be tempted to get one.
there's a Behringer version in the works rumored to be priced at $50
Yeah, prices are mad!
that owned. new favorite episode!!
Thank you!!!
Your Jam parts are really outstanding.
Thank you!!!
If any, this (or rather the JP8000) is the last synth I 'need' in my collection of epic 90's eurodance/gabber synth legends!
Once and yet again kudos for yet again a hilaric vid! New Kids included 😁
I definitely need to go to Vienna one day, or a week, I'll bring my QS when I do, you can finally do a BG on that baby then 😬
Thank you so much! QS is moving up my list!
Arguably Roland's last great VA synth. Always wanted one and determined to find a decent used unit one day. You had me laugh out loud when Nick Batt appeared during the PWM demo 🤣🤣🤣🤣
This is one of your best videos. Brilliant 👍
Thank you so much!!!
B.A.D.=Beautiful,Astounding,Delectible
Gear
Sounds legit;)
You nailed that last song
Thank you so much!!!
I recently bought the keyboard version JP-8000 and it’s a synth that needs some decent soldering skills - I’m told the rack version was better built. As a Trance fan though it’s incredible to perfectly recreate so many iconic tracks with no external effects or processing. And the super saw is such fun to play. If you can play with two fingers you can sound like a synth legend!
Yeah, soldering skills definitely help;)
After battery change my lost sound in LR outputs!
@@andrigreen7653 it's a known issue, bad capacitors (mute circuit) . I've replaced it on my unit
The 8080 was used on Sandstorm, which is reason enough to put it in the gear S tier in my book lol.
The 8000/8080 IS trance.
Name of song?

Best. Brand. Ever.
Great video
Thank you!!!
I have to say that is a killer sounding synth, but I’m a sucker for supersaw leads.😊
LOVE supersaws!!!
me too!
Detuned saws 🤤
@@AudioPilz That's why it continues to surprise me the Gaia and System 1 were featured here. I know it's not your hate, but still they have awesome supersaws!
It certainly seems to still reign supreme among SuperSaw sounds, even when stacked up against the Virus, Nord Lead 3, Blofeld, and Mininova!
It really is a magic sound
@@KulshanStudios Do you think it's better than th JP-8000? He never put that one on Bad Gear.
This synth has been on my wanted list for years now. I'm sad to see it on Bad Gear, but also thrilled to see it on Bad Gear.
Thanks!!!
Man I always have to keep my finger on the pause button to catch all your memes! Haha, awesome review as always!
Thank you!!!
ALL RIGHT! Now we're talking! Here's to hoping we one day get a re-release or clone of one of these in the JP-8000's form factor.
Our hopes are on Uli;)
The last Roland synth that defined a genre... The end of R's golden years that included Jupiter 4/6/8, the SH synths, TB-303, the Juno series, D50, JD880 and lastly the JP8000/8080, a dream run from '78 to '97!
So true!!!
Why stop there?
The V-Synth/VP-9000 was crucial to the sound of mid-2000s psy
such as *Shpongle* [Hallucinogen/Simmon Posford]
and *Infected Mushroom,*
both hugely influential and if you haven't heard them yet - well I envy your uh, _virginity!_
Good point about the V- Synth and the VP9000... Roland don't chase ghosts apparently, but have been doing so since the 80s (1988's R8 drum machine had 808 samples). This has become more and more pronounced, now Roland's current lineup appears to be 100% rehashed late 70s to early 90s classic gear. I'm guilty of supporting this too, I have a JU-06A!
As a reference tone for this bit of kit…
’Out of the Blue’ by
Ferry Corsten…It literally came out of this Blue synth, pads, riff and baseline
Legend!
Such a great performance! As Aways!
Thank you!!!
What a glorious video.
Thank you!!!❤️❤️❤️
Another one straight to my nostalgia center in the brain! Wanted it so badly but ended up with a CS1X instead... oh the regret
They do have the same color tho;)
In the 90s, I had both. Nothing wrong with the CS1X. Good times.
@@AudioPilz what WASNT blue oder grey or bluegrey in the 90s...
I was looking for a JP8000 that time, but ended up with a Supernova instead which is still in use.
@@AudioPilz I love these clips. It would be great for an AN1X bad gear review if you have access to that Yamaha VA synth that was in direct competition with these Roland JPs at the time.
I remember when this (and the 8000) was released, I wanted it sooo bad but my early 20 year old self couldn't afford it at the time so instead I got an OG Juno-6 (which was only worth $200 at the time in near mint condition). After all this time I never did get a JP, got a System-8 now tho so that fills my supersaw lust and more... sooo much more. Still have great love & respect for the OG supersaw synth even tho I never did get one.
Sys-8 is super powerful!
Alter genau so ist das hahahaha am Ende im Mix bist du wieder Happy und die klingt geil 😂😍 Danke so sehr für das Video ❤️ die 8000 ist mein lieblingssynth 🤭🥰
Vielen Dank!!!
Man, now I wanna go buy another one again, maybe I won't sell it like the other times :D
It's so darn pretty as well!
Yeah, these come and go;)
Well, this synth sounds pretty great to me!
👍
While some palace intellectuals were writing critical articles about resonance noise, lack of sound, and spewing hatred while sipping hot coffee in front of the window, some real music producers (thousands of them, in fact) produced hundreds of timeless songs with this device, which was the first bullet of the new era.
*I say very clearly that those who speak ill of JP-8000 and JP-8080 are incurably ignorant in my opinion. A respected and passionate music veteran would never indulge in such negative thoughts. The JP family is a true legend that opened the door to an era.*
Your memes are great by the way. Even if I mute the video, they help me understand what you're talking about.
Thank you!!!
Nicely balanced review as always - its' definitely a classic Roland by this point, it became an icon, up there with the TB and the TRs. I've only been hands on a few times on one, but it was the pads and strings I loved from it - they have a beautifully dark sound to them that I can't actually coach out of my JP6!! Thanks as always! I belt you felt both dirty and excited at the same time, doing that trance tune ;-)
Thank you!!!
I wanted one of these so bad back in the day and I regret not buying one.
Yeah, I think we both missed the best time for buying one
Same here 😅
Same here
I own the JP8000. It was my first of many synths. I still have it because of how simple it is to use and the great sounds that I'm able to get out of it. It can sound very aggressive when programmed properly. I'm a huge fan of the feedback osc, which is so often overlooked. I've also gotten some massive basses out of her. I have a patch I named "SlapYoMama" that is one of the deepest, subwoofer assaults of all time. I've also gotten some great, trippy pads out of her that have some very nice movement. The presets on this synth are super lame, but if you get in there and do some work (what's the point of having all those knobs and sliders if you don't?), you can pull out all sorts of killer sounds. Anyone who talks crap about the way this synth sounds has never done anything but scroll through presets.
I actually like some of the presets too;)
I love the 8080, still inspires me.
👍
Wow this episode was top notch! All devils in all details

Another fantastic episode! Who doesn't love the 90's acidish filter ?

Sure it sounds thin, but thin sounding synths tend to sit well in mixes where there's a lot of other elements going on. Also a recurring theme I've noticed in these vids is your good taste animated movies
Thanks!!! Totally agreed!
I was really hoping that Roland would release a JP-8K boutique this year for its anniversary 😢
