Have Plugins Become Better???
Have Plugins Become Worse???
2024 vs. 2004
20 years
In this video we will be trying to find out if synth plugins have become better over the last two decades. There’s gonna be a few rather technical comparisons but I’ll try to keep these to an absolute minimum - it’s all about the actual use in live performance and music production.
Our reference point for this will be the Korg Legacy MS-20 plugin from 2004 for three simple reasons: one, it was one of the first commercially successful software instruments that had a reputation of sounding like the real deal, two, most of you will be familiar with the sound aesthetics of the original and three, I got hold of this beautiful Korg MS20ic controller which allows for a more hands-on comparison and will make this little experiment more digestible for the hardware fanatics among you.

The newer Pro X desktop is super fun, sounds great... and unless I'm missing something after years of IK use... you can definitely choose what software you want to install throughout their lineup. There is also a Uno Synth editor app/plugin available on the site directly from my user account... I'm guessing because you borrowed a unit for this review, you were unaware of this. Had you been an owner and registered your product, there may have been less gripe in this video. 🤷♂ People should definitely know this disclaimer a year post this video's release. FWIW
I heard they used this on "Don't you want me baby" Human League, Anyone know if this hold truth?
Just bought mine. Then you tell me The One True Synth God had one?
I have never used a synth, don't play any instruments, etc.... I don't even go here. But I am enjoying your videos a lot!
I'm an artist, not a musician. I think these would make a great art installation if they worked out the bugs / made it possible for laypeople to play with easily. Too bad they decided to sell it as a consumer product before it was finished.
Casio Crapman
How did you not complain about the mute mode functionality….? Like do you want to select which track to edit OR mute it? Well if you want to do that you have to leave mute mode first… they should implement it using the trig keys like other digi boxes. I burn 4 tracks on my syntakt as midi control for Digitone so I can mute from there instead using mute destinations, but this also gives me access to the MW/BC macros… which could have been more accessible (and sequenced) from the Digitone itself. Otherwise, great video and loved the track you made with it.
I love the sound with my 80s midi rack, but i can't fit any finger on any keys, of course I'll get the DX too
2:19 Sample
To be fair, when I was 14 years old for £30 this was the closest I could get to a DAW without having to spend £1000s on PCs, midi instruments etc
Out of curiousity what are folks favourite Volcas?
Always held off on the volca line for fear of falling into all analog gear is great trap, now with time and perspective the ones that interest me most are the drum, sample and fm just occurred to me their all digital. To be fair though I have got a subsequent 37 so slightly spoilt in the analog department and would happily use any of the volca line.
The Reface DX is awesome
You can literally make the VST plugin better than the original or sound literally the same, but true synthheads will never leave their ground and continue saying the analog *physical* model is better.
The thing with dexed is that if you show it to a beginner synth dude and they use it, they will probably say it’s crap. It is more intermediate friendly because the presets are mediocre and it forces you to actually make your own, which is the beauty of it.
My dad gave me his
😂😅
The worst Korg volca is the one you don´t have 😂!
This is definitly not a bad gear at all but some of the most incredible and versatile drumsynth ever built. Amazing sound. Will never sell mine. The heart beat of my studio
YES, daws and plugins are drivers are not as efficient as they were. A lot of effort was put into limiting unnecessary maths for the cpu with good programming. I can run 2 roland cloud jp8 or 100 sylenths. That is crazy...
It’s vsauce
I play in a Funk band and we own two... That synth puts the "B" in Booty. One of the best units to have in the arsenal. Wish they made it 37 like the Moog Phatty. And don't come for my Ultranova.
I think the MIDI out on my 505 might be broken as well? I really like the 505's built-in pattern sequencing, and I was hoping to use the MIDI out to sequence some Garageband drums but the triggering is broken, no matter what I try. edit: The MIDI out is now working properly when I use the Mio USB MIDI adapter. Still doesn't work with the MIDI interface built into my audio interface. The TR505 ain't so bad after all ;)
I want to make synthwave. I have a sr16 but recently got a tr8s new for only $550. Do I really need the tr8s for synthwave or Tycho style drums?
I've still got one that I use occassionally for drums. The synth patches all sounded horrific
Im thinking about sampling capabilities - which at the moment I pack, together with a mixer or multiple input for stems to polish later on. Since I got bitwig I believe there is no hw able to compete in terms of sound design and with a sampler I could bè able to take the sounds out and just play hands on. Now, this bluebox is actually super interesting because it can sample, it can do looking, it can expand thus tracks on other machine, it can multisample as well and due to the form factor it could bè a tool box to bring the machines all multisampled or sampled and play on the beach. I was eyeing a tracker+ before, or an octatrack but really, idk. I think for now I will wait and enjoy just jamming with what I have
The patchbay stopped working on my controller
Analogue... But sound is too ambent
€165 used :D Prices have pretty much doubled or even tripled since then, although last week I finally managed to snag again at a rather sensible €275. Seems this is a future classic.
Habe mir einen gegönnt, ist echt klasse ✌🏻
This channel should have a red line that splits bad gear and good gear. The volca bass is that red line.
Soft synths have become more, but not necessarily better. Only where enormous sample libraries are required are there obvious benefits of running modern software and hardware.
cool
I prefer the Korg.
This channel made me realize I love bad gear.
I found one at goodwill last year for $7.99!! Kept the sticker on the back to prove it!! Lol. It’s still possible!!
no joke i still use FM7 and KORG Legacy VST's from the 'Windows XP' era and they sound AMAZING.
How did I miss this video? Great to see one of my childhood favourites be given a modern look - this game was practically my gateway into making music as a whole! I think I still have my old memory cards with the tracks I made back in 2003 somewhere...
It seems we have an scammer audiopillz doppelganger
I am busy uploading my tribute to roland video (which involves a better sounding samsung). Fanboyz gonna be real pissed off.
Such a great machine
I cannot believe I missed this episode…..this is my first synth ….i love it the most. Even going to get a desk top as I watched a vid combining the 2 for 8 voices . I do suffer from G.A.S. Lol
Again! This was my first keyboard in the 90s aggggh!
Oh hell. Thats the first sampler I ever had. I would sequence it with a Boss Dr202. Terrible setup but im talking mid 90s.
First Sub Zero.... Now... Plain ZERO!
i still want to someday own a tempest... so it shouldnt be that bad.
anyone wanting a choir could just get a TC Helicon Voicelive touch2 for the price of 1 doll!
You need to do a Bad gear episode of the MPC 1000 without JJOS and then make a better gear episode with the JJOS on it. Not to say I have the 1000 arriving tomorrow but I can say your channel lacks a video of it! 😁
Miku!!!
LOLed at the massive kick out of speaker.
