    Wonderful video Lanier. The picture and the intro were fantastic. As far as your collection of classics...I am incredibly jealous :) I'm all in on the classics and hope there will be a revival at some point. If we're lucky some future perfumers will come across this video and push the designer fragrance industry to return to its former glory.

    • @laniersmith1798
      @laniersmith1798  Před 7 lety +5

      I believe that in fragrance as in the fashion world things are cyclical. What's old becomes new again. I am seeing a nudge in the niche world toward a renaissance of the classics. Designer's hopefully are not far behind. Yet that is not to say that there are no great modern scents. In the niche world that is where I am finding some amazing perfumers such as Bruno Fazzolari and MikMoi just to name two of many. There are many. But the time is right for someone to break out of the pack and start a modern/classical movement. Cheers.

    Great video as usual and what an exquisite collection! It’s curious that you mentioned Chanel Egoiste as a barbershop fragrance. I don’t believe i recall anyone calling it a barbershop, but now, thinking about it, Geo F. Trumper, a very traditional british gentleman's barber and perfumer has a Sandalwood based Cologne and after shave that is strikingly close to Chanel’s Egoiste. So i believe it realy makes sense looking at Egoiste from barbershop perspective.To be honest, i was a little sad to see that the my beloved Guerlain Vetiver was left out... but then, i guess your list is already huge and full of timeless classics. Thank you Lanier, for creating a constant supply of entertaining and educational videos.Cheers from Portugal.

    Thank You, Mr. Smith for including Houbigant's wonderful selections, which just so happens to remind me of my Uncles also. I wondered if any if the best representations of lavender scents would make this list being that it's not a prefered note of yours? MDCI Invasion Barbare or Amouage Sunshine Man? Which oddly enough never gets described as a barber shop scent??? Hmm.. At any rate. Always enjoy your post. Continued Success. Nice line up! I got duc ve vervins l'extreme coming in today! Very excited. My favorites are Eau Sauvage Parfum by Christian Dior(2017),Aramis by Aramis and Azzaro pour homme. I like Quorum edt, Pasha de Cartier edt, Safari by Ralph Lauren, Legasi by Armaf, eau de Passion Men Intense by Franck Olivier, Vetiver edt by Guerlain, and Drakkar Noir. Barbershop scents are so underated and hated lol. Stetson after shave is awesome too, really does cool my face after a shave! Thanks for sharing!

    Lanier, thanks for that trip down memory lane! Oh how fondly I remember everyone wearing Grey Flannel when I was a mere pup. I do feel compelled to make a couple additions to your list however. The scent that most reminds me of the barbershop is Pinaud Clubman. Who doesn't forget being dusted with that familiar green bottle of talc after a haircut or the smell of "Dad" after shaving and splashing his face with nearly pure alcohol (MEN love PAIN!!) Clubman is a sad and sorry version of it's former self today, found only in a crappy plastic bottle on the bottom shelf at CVS...stripped of it's dignity and oakmoss by the uncaring march of time. I have a bottle in my collection, though I have given it some respect by putting it in the glass this classic deserves. Although not strictly a barbershop scent, I love those glorious Royall Bay Rhum and lime formulations that seemed to exist behind the striped pole!

    • @laniersmith1798
      @laniersmith1798  Před 7 lety

    So many great barbershop fragrances--and many I expected to see based on your reviews---but I'm glad to see you included Monsieur de Givenchy (it's a great one...reminds me of Chanel Pour Monsieur EDP in some ways) and also Gres Cabochard. I can't believe that Cabochard gets ignored by the fragrances community. I have the EDT and EDP and love them. My God! The most barbershop is Clubman, by Pinaud. It smells exactly like a barbershop, with the talcum powder, just like when you finished getting a haircut and the barber would splash this on your neck and dust talcum powder with a brush to get the loose hairs off your neck, then pull off the sheet and let you off the chair. Every time I sniff the Clubman bottle, it takes me back to the early sixties, at my uncle's barber shop in Key West, where I lived at the time, in my teens . Now I'm going to watch Follow the Fleet, with Fred & Ginger !

    Grey Flannel was the club scent of the early 1980's, as was Lagerfeld. It was trailed by Farenheit in the late 1980's. Each one of these fragrances only required a spritz or two due to their potency. I was surprised that you did not mention Dana's English Leather, a scent that could be considered a barbershop fragrance. Now that one was tricky. Either the scent agreed with your body chemistry or the wearer stunk to high heavens. By the way, you have inherited your grandfather's smile. I bet the ladies loved him, as we also are bewitched by you. :)

      Yes as a matter of fact my Grandfather was adored by the ladies. And my Grandmother always used to say I inherited his personality and charm. But if you ask me I am but a pale reproduction of Grandpa Bill. Yes English Leather fits right in there and in fact I wore it in High School along with British Sterling. But alas they are not in my line up...YET! LOL. Cheers Love Is Who You Are.

    Hello Lanier, excellent video as usual. My fave barbershop is Special No127 from Floris. I know you are getting into Floris, so I think you'll really appreciate this one. Check out this backstory:
    'Originally created in 1890 for Russia’s Grand Duke Orloff and named ‘Orloff Special’, Special No. 127 was introduced into the Floris range some years after his death having been renamed after the page in the ‘Specials’ formula book in which the recipe was recorded. The fragrance has become a favourite with many over the years - both men and women. A refreshing citrus blend of bergamot and orange with petitgrain introduce the heart of neroli, lavender and geranium in this floral cologne. Patchouli and musk add depth and character.' (Description from the Harrods website).
    I find the scent to be a clean lavender, very classy and with an aura of the refined Gentleman of equisite breeding, manners and social decorum. I hear that it was Winston Churchill's favourite scent, and it's certainly worth checking out. www.fragrantica.com/perfume/Floris/Special-127-5551.html

      Ciao Paolo. Oh what a great scent memory!! I love Florence and have been many times. The city to me has the most wonderful scent. It smells to me of notes of leather and flowers in the spring. (I only go to Florence in the spring!) thank you for your charming comment that took me right back to much loved Italy. Cin cin!

    Good evening Sir, I notice your comments on other youtubers videos and have had a few conversations in the past with you in the comment sections, apologies that I have never seen any of your videos until now where you are going over a group of fragrances I am loving at the moment.
    My favourite at the moment is By Men D&G and YSL Rive Gauche. I have Panhaligons Sartorial and Club Man on the way but looking into Fougere Nobile, Milano Cento and At the Barbers.

    If you like Grey Flannel, definitely give Ombre de Hyacinth by Tom Ford a try. Personally I don't see what the controversy is all about. Maybe I am biased because Grey Flannel was the very first scent I ever bought as a teenager so it has a rooted place in my heart...

    Well, I can't truly explain it but this must be one of my top fragrance genres! LOL! ... - because, imo, no collection is complete without 4711(I LOVE eau de colognes and all their variations),
    I'm never without Grès Cabochard,
    love the Caswell and Massey men's scents (I often buy the soaps),
    just got Houbigant Fougere Royale about a month ago,
    I own Grey Flannel,
    adore Corso Como original. (haven't smelled Uomo.),
    love Floris as a Line (most of the pre-reforms are complete stunners),
    love Geo F. Trumper, the Sandalwood is amazing!
    Many notes that are labeled "male-centric" are amongst my faves.
    Could also be my English roots as British Houses seem to (correct me if I'm wrong) do many "Barbershop" scents.
    Plus, as we know, I'm completely mad for the classics.
    Lovely mentions, Lanier! :)

      Will do DiamondBanger87... I agree. Grey Flannel has suffered from a bum rap that I believe is coming from popular suggestion. Know what I mean? Her her book Scent And Subversion Barbara Herman talks about the rebel she found in Grey Flannel and of it's beauteous drydown. Cheers

    How wonderful ! Thanks very much for this review Lanier. Barbershop scents are what really get me going in the world of fragrance. I shall be watching this a few times with interest. Do they all class as fougeres?

      Thanks Paul, No they are not all Fougeres which are classically called barbershop. There are some leathers, and Woody Spice fragrances in there too. As I mentioned not all of them might be considered Barbershop Fragrances buy some people but to me they fit the bill. Cheers!

    This is your cousin Hitz. Thanks for showing a photo of Grandpa Bill. I enjoyed your review of barbershop scents, but you must have gone to a lot of fancier barbershops than I did. It was Old Spice, Lucky Tiger, or Jockey Club by Pernoud (a drugstore scent that is sold in plastic bottles at CVS and which I still use---I'm cheap). Which Uncle Bud were you referring to? Uncle Bud A or my D. Dad usually wore English Leather or Brut. But you have to remember that he always had the scents of Bering cigars on him and machine shop on him....Thanks, again. I enjoyed your piece. I hope that someday you'll do a piece on Habanita and Tabu. One is relatively cheap and the other is just plain cheap. But they both have in common that when they were first brewed they were meant (according to my reading) to be rather dark and smoky. Almost Ava Gardener-like in The Barefoot Contessa. My M said that when they were young your M's favorite perfume was Tabu. My M liked Heaven Scent. As an adult my M liked Shalimar and White Shoulders. Her taste never really changed. And don't forget Uncle Bud A bringing gift sets for our Ms and Granny of Evening in Paris.. Luv ya cuz, Hitz

    Ahhh, Grey Flannel, I LOVE that fragrance on a man. It's citrus/woodsy & screams "come nuzzle up to me!" Lanier I'm wondering, with such a large collection of fragrances how do you decide what to wear on a daily basis & are you ever overwhelmed by making the decision?

    • @laniersmith1798
      @laniersmith1798  Před 7 lety +1

      I have my fragrance divining rod. It works just like a water divining rod. I hold it up, close my eyes and it points to what I should wear. Actually it is mostly by feeling...."I'm feeling...Dior today!" I do divide my fragrances by Fall/Winter and Spring/Summer so that helps a great deal. Love your description of Grey Flannel. Perfectly fits the fragrance. Cheers Catherine.
