- Sometimes a piece just calls out and says "pick me, pick ME!" That's what this one did. I'm glad I gave in though it wasn't much of a fight. I love turning root balls and this turns out to be one of my favorites! Finished in shellac.

It's gorgeous! I'm very happy that you were able to figure a way to mount this one, Phil. I've stared at it for several years and couldn't figure that out. So, sending it your way was absolutely the right decision. An incredibly beautiful bowl! Very well turned/unturned! 👍
Thanks, Dave for sending this to me. I knew it was a winner as soon as I opened the package! I love it, buddy! 😊
Phil! What a wonderful piece! So many awesome characteristics. I appreciate you so much and look forward to every video! 💪You are one of the greatest turners and keep the true nature in every piece you work on! Be well Phil! 😃
Thanks a lot, David! 😊
Allways a pleasure to watch how you fall in love with a peace of wood.
For other people bark mulch, for us a beautiful gift Mother Nature send us.
Thank you for sharing!
Thank you for watching! 😊
I beginning to realize that you are a natural ham. You play to the camera. And don't you dare stop. Your conversation, both to us and to yourself is what keeps us coming back. Giving a part of yourself is what wants us to give back, to know you better, to send you crazy chunks of wood and watch you work your magic on them. You don't make your videos into a classroom where you have a particular skill or knowledge that you are trying to impart. Instead, each video is, if I may borrow the phrase, a magical mystery tour. Another extraordinary bowl, Phil. Keep those chips flying. Best.
Paul called, he wants his lyrics back! 😊
Wow Phil you are right. This is one beautiful and unique bowl. I would say it is right on the top of the list for my favorite.
For sure the rounded areas fit right in there with all the nature.
Smarties might look good in it but they look pretty darn good in a a paper picnic bowl...just ask Gord LOL
You have a right to be proud of this one my friend!
Take care,
Gary
Thanks a lot, Gary! This one just spoke to me and mapped out the whole turn. I just held the chisel. Hard to go wrong with a rhody root! 😊
Hard to beat turning on Auto Pilot!
But for sure you have programed it very well!
I haven't heard that excitement in your voice for sometime now, this piece really got your mojo back, I can see why I love it too, good job Phil, seem to have heard that a few times lately too. Shows you are on the up.
Thank you, Lewis! 😊
I picture Dave just goin' out for a leisurely stroll and eyeballing every crazy, gnarly tree just to bless Phil with a challenge! 😄
LOL! I have a great battery-op small chainsaw and permission to take whatever I want from the mixed hardwood and berry briar woods down the lane from the house. It's all going to be developed eventually, so the owner doesn't care. Apple, pear, cherry, wild plum, alder, oak, hawthorn, ash, more ash, and yet more..... Yeah, some gnarly stuff. Good job I know how to use the saw! 😁
😊
Phil you have an amazing relationship with mother earth 💜
Thank you
😊
Happy to see you, Phil. Keep your spirits up, we'll be here when you are.
I appreciate that 😊
You’ve managed to take another seemingly impossible piece of wood and turn it into something that’s absolutely incredible. You truly are the best of the best. Keep on keeping on, Phil 👍🏼
Thank you very much, Derrick! 😊
Phil I just want to wish you well with your treatment schedule, you are a shining star to up all.
Michael 🇬🇧
😊
Finding or bothering to find and wash up a root is pretty special so kudos to Calmwood Creations for the dirty work and to Phil for the insight into seeing the bowl that emerged.
Nice work boys.
😊
With all the bad news going on in the world, it's nice to end the week on a good note with the simplicity and beauty of another bowl crafted by Phil. I think I enjoy your "let's try it and see" approach and decisions you make while turning, as well as your pleasure in pointing out the natural features of the piece at the end of your videos the most. Thank you, Phil. Nicely done!
Thank you, Scott! 😊
Phil, that bowl is special for more than one reason. It is beautiful!
Your decision-making monologue is especially entertaining.
And, I didn't expect to see the Thursday video from one of my top two favorite CZcams woodturners! It was a special surprise.
Take care of YOU! We'll be here if you need to take some time off. Absence make the heart grow fonder, right?
Thanks, Crystal! There might be one more video if I can get it edited before next week. 😊
I love hearing you talk about your beatiful creations. You make me feal like I have my hands on the piece
Wonderful! 😃
Gorgeous, Phil. In my opinion, your very best piece. Bark, cracks, rock and holes form the bundle and you formed the wonderful little bowl, that we were allowed to watch now...
Thanks for this
Many thanks, Stefan! 😊
Once again a masterpiece. Great to see you in the shop Phil. Sound strong in spirit. Great job Dave for sending the piece. Thank you for sharing. Keep them coming.👍👍👍🙏
😊
What a beauty! The "handle", as you call it, reminds me of Arches National Park in Utah. One of my and my wife's favorite hiking places. Glad you KEPT the rock where it was. That's the rock of ages. Don't use it for anything. Why hide the beauty. Is the Mona Lisa used as a tray? Great one Phil. Thx A bunch.
Thanks, Kersi! 😊
You are very fortunate to be on the receiving end of all the beautiful pieces
Don't I just know it, Wayne! I have the best, most generous viewers I have ever heard of! They make this channel special not just for me but for all the viewers as well. So much variety! 😃
Wow, the natural beauty in that bowl is amazing
😊
Beyond turning a bowl, this is an art piece. Much respect.
😊
Phil perfect turning. Perfect vision perfect finish🌈. Perfect Perfect Perfect 🤩
😊
Phil,.
This is a wonderful piece. It's just amazing what you do with it. You start with a grunge, dirty old rootball and you come out with a new wonderful piece
It's fun too, Roger! 😊
Most emphatically yes, it is beautiful! It give us something to work on and dream about. Thanks again for the teaching and the goals you set.
Ken
I'm glad you think so, Ken, thank you! 😊
What a transformation! It’s wonderful a person can imagine what it must have been before your professional touch. Just another one of your excellent creations! Barbara
Thank you so much, Barbara! 😊
That's the magic Phil can do with wood.
😊
The more I look, the more I like it! Well Done Mystro! .....Newk from Kentucky
Thanks, Newk! 😃
I think that I shall call you Nobby Phil . Another Gnarly Masterpiece
😊
Hi Phil, I hope this finds you well. I am now the proud owner of a router and all the bells, whistles, and ding dongs that go with one. I needed one to better inlay the glass top of our coffee table. And I see that there are plenty of wood projects to do with a router. So, it soon looks like I'll be making sawdust at my homestead like you. doing projects. Safety Rule #1. Make sure the router is unplugged before switching router bits and such. It looks like I better resupply our first aid kit and medicine cabinet. Face Shield and Mask and Bandages On!!!!!
😊
Eyup. Wow ! Who would have thought a rhododendron would put up such a fight. Well Phit you kicked its butt and tamed it. Well almost. A beautiful piece as usual Phil. We thank you.
My pleasure, thanks for watching, Kev! 😊
Wish that I could give more than one thumbs up on this one. 👍 👍 👍 There! That'll do it!
Wow, thanks! 😊
oh that's lovely... I would carry it around with me with that handle... everything about that piece calls to me... once again you hit it out the ball park.
Thanks, Celia! 😊
All the turnings are one of a kind, but this stands out from most of the others you've done. Therefore, this is OutStanding in so many ways. A great video watching you reveal the final product.
Wow, thank you, JIm! 😊
That's one of your finest pieces Phil. You really centered it well working around all of the voids.
Thank you, Bill! 😄
Magnificent piece, Phil!
Wishing you all the best for a full and complete recovery. Take good care of yourself. We'll be right here with you, video or not. 🤗
😊
Beautiful piece. I like that you knew exactly what you wanted to do, and then did it. Even removing the tenon was brilliantly done.
😊
A built-in handle with a big, beautiful bowl for smarties makes for a perfect piece. I love your rhodi creation.
Thank you, Mauna! 😊
lovely as usual Phil we will be here whenever you can come on thinking of you and your amazing turning xx
😊
I would love to use that in a jewelry display to show off faux coral, faux ivory, turquoise, MOP and copper or rose gold pieces. One piece of art complimenting another. Drool.
😊
Wow! This is really a great piece - thank you for the care you took as you developed the piece. I really enjoyed watching as you brought it to life.

Wow Phil ... you've just proved to us all that flowers are not always the best part of a tree. I have a new respect for the humble rhododendron. Just beautiful 😍
Me too, Denise! 😊
Absolutely beautiful, Phil. So lovely to hear you enjoy it too.
😊
I have to agree rounding. Those corners was a good thing. It helps set it off and bring attention to the top which is beautiful.

Thank you, Jon! 😊
Absolutely stunning another beautiful beautiful piece
😊
Definitely my favorite !! 👍👍
Cool, thanks, R G! 😊
A really nice piece that was a bit of a challenge looks fabulous phill well done 👍
😊
Hey Phil . I started watching this one on my phone , it looked so good , I had to come in the house and watch on the big screen. One of my favorites . So much in fact that I mite sneak over to my neighbors after dark and dig up their Rhododendron plant/tree. Hope they are sound sleepers so they dont here the backhoe . Wish me luck !!
🤪 I like the way you think, but it's much more neighborly to wait until they go on a Caribbean cruise. That way, you'll have more time to hide the tracks to and from! 😁
@@calmwoodcreations3709 LMAO.
All you need is the root, Steve. Dig it up, cut it off and replant! 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop That is an awesome idea .. The darn thing just died , I dont know why
Admittedly, I will fast forward to the end of certain videos or even stop them altogether, if they just can't seem to hold my interest. However, Mr Phil, I cannot think of a single instance where I've done either of those with your videos. I simply enjoy watching your artistic creativity at work. I love the way you listen when a piece "speaks" to you. It's as if you've received a blessing from Mother Nature herself to create something from her creation.
I am forced to agree with you on this one. It's one of your best creations yet. You unveiled the hidden beauty in this one "for all the world to see" like nobody else could. I truly do not believe anyone else could have brought out the natural beauty in this piece quite like you did. Many would have resorted to epoxy resin. But, of course, that's not at all your style, which is one of the main reasons I watch your channel.
Keep up your amazing artistry, Mr Phil, for a long as you are able.
Thank you, Les, for your very kind and appreciated comment! 😊
You are a true master of your craft. WOW!!!
Thank you kindly, Lisa! 😊
BEAUTIFUL! You went to sharpen you gouges and came back and I said out loud "That works much more GOODER!"
Always, Rick, always! 😊
Love every thing you do.you leave the wood its integrity. I also try too but your the master.😊
Thanks, Ellie! 😊
I’d use it as a change bowl. It turned out so beautifully.
😊
Phil that's absolutely beautiful. I really like it.
Glad you like it, Eddie, thank you! 😊
Can’t believe just how much air you can turn, impressive
Haha, yeah, the air is fine! It's those hard bits in between that cause the problems! 😊
Simply stunning bowl, Phil, truly gorgeous in every way. Rhododendron bushes are very beautiful, but now we know the roots even surpasses the flower florets in your hands. Been in hospital for a couple of weeks and catching up with your videos, you never disappoint dear man with your lovely chat and chuckles. Hope you're doing well and have a great week. Thank you. 💛🫂😊
I hope you are well healed and restored, Sian! 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Thank you, Phil, getting better each day, Hope everything is going well for you too, take care and bless you. 😊
Just gorgeous Phil, crazy cutting! Thanks for sharing, stay safe, Jules, Droitwich, England
Thanks, you too, Jules! 😊
Thank You Phil, Thank You Dave at Calmwood Creations... Home early from work BUT the power was off...(just cant win)...Gas stove so able to make dinner but still no power. Finely power on, food cooked, work cloths off, ..YEA (Phil time!!!!)...Always over far too quickly... Phil you are perfecting your technique. Your strategy for each piece shows your experience. You know how to approach each piece in a slight way differently than perhaps 3 years ago? Wonderful turning !!! TM
I just noticed ... The root on the side looks like the head and bill of a Duck. Curled up Duck with the eye...GREAT...TM
Oh, man, I hate when the power is off. We rely on it so much now! Glad it all worked out, Tuffy! Yes, I'd say I have improved a lot over the last few years. Still got lots to learn, though! 😊 Thanks, Tuffy, have a great weekend!
You really are the master of turning weird wood 👌
I don't know if that's a good thing or not, James! LOL! Thanks! 😊
It's stunning. Thank you for sharing your passion with us. Keep safe.
😊
I'm proud to say I'm a female watercolor/pastel artist heading in the senior citizen category, but LOVE to watch your woodworking videos which is absolutely an art form that screams creativity. I love, love, love the pieces that you create and excitedly wait for the next video. Thank you for what you do!
Wow, thank you, Lana, I appreciate the time you spend with me! 😊

😊
Phil another great piece. I think your work, all of it is wonderful. Keep at it guy we (all of your subscribers) enjoy watching.
Thank you, Billy! 😊
I have a feeling, Dave enjoys hunting wood as much as you do turning it. Beautiful.
I believe you are right, Khan! 😊
You are a true artist.
Thanks, Arla! 😊
Phil, the bowl is so gorgeous! I love that you turn such unusual pieces! The bark inclusions and saw cuts are so much of the character of the bowl!
Yes! 😊
Stay positive Phil. We’ll be here when you come back if you can’t manage every week. 🌹
😊
Looks great. I like nothing more than getting the ugliest piece of wood, chucking it in the lathe and seeing how it turns out.
😊
Howdy again from West Virginia! Love the live edge pieces! Turned out to be a real beauty! Take care & God Bless!!!
😊
