Letting The Wood Choose - Wood Turning - New Video!

  • A beautiful piece of spalted Weeping Birch caused me to turn a round bowl for a change! Most of my turnings are natural pieces with bark, bark inclusions, voids, etc. This piece is perfect except for some punkiness that did give me some extra work to do. Still, it polished up beautifully and it was fun to turn! More pieces of this wood to follow in the coming months.

    You're quite right about letting the wood speak for itself. Turning exotic shapes works well for a lot of pieces, but that mellow, spalted wood looks like an ancient map. The elegant bowl shape shows that off, while not overpowering the effect of the grain. Good one.

    There you go again. You let the piece talk to you and tell you how to (turn it) to bring out his best features. When your as talented as you can never make a mistake (its called ON THE FLY ADJUSTMENT) you just change courses while you are turning and listen to what it tells you to do.. BEAUTIFUL as always. Yes, that would have a lot to do with what Mother Nature gave you to work with but your turning was absolutely masterful. Also, your decision on how to turn it was so well planned. You are the master, my friend, and it was a pleasure to watch you turn this one! I'm sure you are as happy to be back in your shop as we are to have you back. Stay well, buddy!!

    Oh my friend Phil, you are indeed the maestro, the professor of wood turning and believe me, I think I have learnt enough about showcasing bark. I have not been able to see much about your mastery in turning pieces without bark - which, I am sure, you have also mastered. Please consider the rest of us who enjoy the wider appreciation of "artistic wood turning, as I have enjoyed that piece👍.

    • @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
      @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop  Před rokem

      I'm glad you've learned about turned pieces with bark, Daniel. 😃 It's what I like to do. I try to keep as much nature in my pieces as possible. I have turned several pieces without bark, even "artistic" pieces. There are two things about that, for me. I find a nice square or round, flawless piece, intimidating. I don't know what to do with them. If I finally figure out what to do with them, I find I'm not having any fun and they end up like a perfectly flawless turning that anyone could do. Rather boring. I'll stick to what I know and do best, if that's OK with you.

    I see a dragon's head in the spalting. When working with wood, it's always a good idea to listen to what it tells you. The piece is fairly simple, but the wood you used and the craftsmanship of your turning and finishing makes it a complex and interesting piece of art. Well done, Phil!

    Phil, can't tell you how much I'm enjoying your videos. I'm a hobby turner and your turning style plus your character really agree with me. I really like and agree with your approach to the wood and keeping it natural. Keep up the great work and thanks for sharing your turning with us, you do some beautiful pieces!
    👍😎

    An amazing piece of art from a mundane cube of wood. It’s beautiful in its simplicity.

    Nice bowl Phil, the spalting looks like a vintage map. Good to have the leader of the pack turning bowls again, fun times.
