- American Sycamore and I have a love/hate relationship. I love the finished product but I hate getting there! LOL! The wood I have is heavily spalted and that often means it's heavily punky. It also has bark that doesn't just peel off but flakes off, continuously. It takes a lot of work to pick off all the loose bark but, what remains is often, along with the beautiful grain after sanding, some of the most gorgeous contrasts that make woodturning, for me, a wonderful vocation. This piece is no exception. Finished in shellac.

THANK YOU PHIL !!!!!!!!! What a joy to hear your voice again, it feels sooooo gooood, YEA!!!!!!! ... American Sycamore next to the huge UC Berkeley Bell Tower. Phil it is punky because they trimmed off the dead limbs. It was just the best I could find. I could, perhaps, cut down one of the solid trees BUT I am guessing (ha) the campus police might not appreciate that ??? When I saw that limb I thought "perhaps spend the rest of your life all spruced up sitting on the shelf instead of rotting away in the compost pile" ... Beautiful turning today Phil, it is such a pleasure to watch you turn, THANKS...TM
Tuffy: Berkeley? Wonder if it is California sycamore (native) rather than American sycamore (native to east coast USA). I have not turned either of those varieties, so would not know. Am only familiar with the hybrid London Plane (sycamore) used so much in landscaping in this area.
Great thought, Tuffy! Much more appreciated all spruced up rather than just waiting to wither away. I appreciate that you could see something in this Sycamore and made the effort to save it! You're our hero! Thank you, my friend! 😊

Howdy Mr Anderson. Of all the wood turners I have watched on CZcams you have truly been the most helpful. "5/8 bowl gouge, turning at XRPM. Mask and face shield on". I learned how to mount awkward pieces using a forstner bit from you. Sandaflex is great. You have been a huge inspiration to my turning. Side note... You are a pretty good tax man. You saved that guy's house. Thank you so much for taking the time to teach me and others how to make art out of wood.
