- They say that beauty is only skin deep - well lets find out as I turn what has to be the ugliest piece of laburnum I've ever seen. Splits and rot won't stop me trying to find the beauty within. Join me at the UGLY BUG BALL

Great eye to see the beauty underneath. The years in the grain - surviving the elements, just existing - are amazing. We humans are nothing without The Trees.
I could not agree more Greg, I consider myself very lucky to be able to work with them.
Oh my!!! The grain of this wood is fabulous! You are so adventurous. Seeming to gravitate towards unusual bits, roots, burls, and all kinds of challenges to turn that are a risk but produce such unique results.
Thanks Cecilia, I work hard to find unusual things tot turn 😀
Absolutely Stunning!!You have an amazing talent & I am blessed to get to see your work!
Thanks so much for watching and your support, Mike 😀
I don't know anything at all about woodturning, yet I find your videos so interesting I've been binge watching your channel the past couple of days. Your work is truly beautiful! Wishing your channel much success!
Awesome, thank you. It's nice to hear the appeal is not just to turners.
Absolutely not ugly. That is beautiful
Came out nice 🙂
Mike, Hi ! I'm a retired machinist of 50 years. Never worked with wood, just metal. I like to say I can make anything. If you can conceive of it, I can make it. In this case I want to pay you an artists compliment. Guys like us can SEE the finished product before the job is started. The drawings are in our head. You did a beautiful job here. If you think like me, you would say, God made this. We just scrape the excess protective layers away. Good scraping, sir.
Thanks for the kind words Bill, I can generally see beyond the exterior and know what I want to make, weather I can find it or not is a different matter, All the best, Mike 😃
What a beautiful piece that ugly old bit of log turned into. It was like "the ugly duckling" becoming a swan. 🥰
Thanks, I loved making this and I eventually gave it to my son for his Uni accommodation 😀
@@MikeHolton I'm betting he loves it.
@@2CraftySeniors He really does 😀
What an amazing piece of wood! I'm not surprised you had to stop n stare a few times to take it all in!! It really does take your breath away!! Beautiful and beautifully done as always! 😊
Thanks! Wood grain have so much life to eat, I could never get tired of looking at it 😀
From an ugly duckling to a beautiful swan. I've never heard of that type of wood but the grain/color is so caramel-ly. That turned out great!
Thanks, laburnum is fairly common in the UK but the wood is expensive. But it is also very beautiful
You never know what you will get with a lump. This turned out lovely .
haha thanks 😀
Burl Ives, The Ugly Bug Ball! Love the call back to classic Disney. Lovely work with the carving, too!
Thanks! I was thinking of a title around the word ugly and it just popped up, not even though about the song in years, now I can't get it out of my head 🤣.
In my mind, I'm seeing the living room of a nice log cabin. There is a chandelier made from deer antlers. There's a canoe book shelf along a wall, and this beautiful piece you made is on one of the canoe shelves, OR it is up on the mantle of a fireplace. Now I'm feeling like a day trip 85 miles to the west of me to visit Waterton Lakes National Park in the Rocky Mountains.
That sounds so perfect, you paint a wonderful picture. I gave this vase to one of my sons so it is now in a shared house at a University in Leeds 😃, not quite a log cabin and I bet the smell is quite different as well 😂
I could spend hours just drinking in the beauty of this fascinating piece. Each swirl and shading in the grain offers a new dimension to explore. Superb workmanship!
Wow thanks so much! Thanks for watching, all the best, Mike
They always look great when they start off ugly . Love the knots and branches.
Haha, thanks Steve, me too 😀
Always so wonderful to see what we can reveal from God's handy work! Stunning!
Thanks James 😀
That Superior Danish Oil really brought that rustic vase to life!
I know, it's very time consuming but very much turning into my favourite finish 👍
Another superb example of a 'Nothing to Awsome' work..... Nicely done Mike...
Glad you enjoyed it, I had great fun making it, apart from the hollowing out 😀
I've never seen laburnum before. What a beautiful wood! Gorgeous piece.
It really is Karen, I've turned it quite a few times and it's always amazing 😄
Beautiful piece of wood, Mike. The knarlier it is, the more I love to turn it.
You and me both! The figure here is amazing
I appreciate you talking about what you are doing as you go. It makes it a better video!
Glad you think so! I get some comments about how I should shut up and get on with it but there are a thousand other channels doing that and I want to offer something different. All the best, Mike
Well it may have looked absolutely ugly to some people but as a former Senior master of Art here in Sth. Aust. I always taught my students there was always beauty in any piece of wood. What the artist has to do is unlock that beauty. In a different form from Sculpture, the wood turner has the same challenge. You have risen to the occasion brilliantly once again Mike. This piece is quite stunning. I am sure there are MANY people who would love to have this piece on display in their home. Congratulations on a stunning piece that has been 'released' from scrap. Cheers, Don from South Australia.
Thanks Don, when I saw this piece online I had a pretty good idea what it would be like inside and just could not resist buying it. I have had so many people ask to buy it but instead I gave it to my son so will now hopefully stay in the family. All the best and I wish you a wonderful new year, Mike
This is AMAZING, AWESOME.
I'm 83 years old. My Dad showed how to use the lathe on a ShopSmith when I was 10 yrs old.
Now I'm addicted to this channel.
My brother now has the ShopSmith, and uses it regularly.
Great channel
Thanks so much! So glad you enjoy my work, I nearly bought an old ShopSmith lathe when I started!! All the best, Mike
Just beautiful. A silk purse out of a sow's ear!

Beautiful piece. Love the grain! Well chosen and executed.
Thank you kindly Mark 👍
That's a very beautiful piece. The grain and coloring reminds me of the mulberry that I have been turning over the last year or two.
I've never turned mulberry but I've seen it and they are similar 😀
It is beautiful. I was going to say that it reminds me of Russian Olive
@@joshuafringer2320 Never seen Russian Olive but it sounds good!
