- After a box I was re-turning exploded I turned the bowl into a lid and threw the base in my firewood sack. It was suggested I might have made something from the broken base and that what you see in this video.
The lid-to-bowl video is • Richard Raffan turns a...
The mark of a professional is being able to successfully recover from disaster. Nice work!
"Back on the chuck and see what happens" words to remember. Great approach to turning a broken piece into something useful. Thank you for sharing this adventure.
it wasn't a catch, it was an irregularly chased thread. I always appreciate that you don't edit out the less than perfect cuts. We all need to face our mistakes and learn to over come them.
Those catches were the genuine article, but usually they're contrived. There's nothing so boring as a demo when everything goes right.
I love the fact that from disaster you still manage to make a couple of separate pieces, like a phoenix rising from the 🔥.
Lemonade from lemons. After watching you, I always recognize that slow, controlled cuts with sharp tools rule the day. That means that I need to slow down and sharpen my tools.
I have watched all three of thes and whilst my heart went out to you when the base exploded, I think the dish you found hiding in the lid was lovely!
Very nicely saved, and as always your openness in the name of education is SO valuable. I've got a few bits that have blown up on me that I now need to go back to to see what I can salvage. One's a nice bit of walnut so hopefully something will come of it!
I was disappointed to hear you say the bottom would be going to become firewood in the prior video because I felt that even with my skill level I could have saved it. Thus, I was very pleased to see this morning's video showing its salvation. Nice job.
It’s amazing what comes out of fire wood. Nō3 after all “it’s just a piece of wood”. But it’s the skill of the inventor that really make a piece of wood an object of art. Congratulations Richard.
Always such an inspiration, thank you Richard!
Thank you. I wasn’t sure how to remove the jagged edge of my broken piece so it’s been just sitting around the shop. Time to try. Wish me luck.
I would have caved in at the first blow-up. Instead you came up with two pieces and three videos. Way to go Richard. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
That's a lovely closing shot. I admit I am glad to see the base of the pot used as well. Many thanks!
I love getting ideas for repurposing projects that just don't work out. Thanks
You make my day! I'd really love to see you replicate those oyster boxes your brother did. I can't get them out of my mind.
Very nice Richard.
Is there a woodturners' museum? Your beeswax sock deserves a prominent place.
I believe the AAW (American Association of Woodturners) might have one.
Thank you for the reply.
Amazing from a 50 years old box, that was just a piece of wood. Too recover it to a small dish and small Tray.
That Yew was determined to make you really work for everything you finally got out of it.
Great saves from a disaster! You made the most out of what must have been a real disappointment.
Certainly reborn…very nice!
Spot on.
Recycling at its finest. The Greenie’s are going to love you Richard🇦🇺😬
Very nice,I think that it have been safer to part off the exploded parts.
Parting is parting in that the bits fly regardless of the tools used. The spindle gouge produces the cleaner cut, especiallly when there isn't a catch.
Good job Richard
Nice recovery from a disaster
I watched the original video and when it blew I was surprised the only thing you said was "crikey!" I would have let the explatives fly lol. Buy hey sh*t happens.
Nice save.
Grande! Maestro
Hi Richard, I struggle with design of bowl rims and how to do them properly…or even what the options are….I just wondered if you could discuss that at some time in your videos, many thanks
That's a good topic and thanks for the suggestion. I might need a script for that one.
Thanks, Richard. I was smiling the whole time because you saved it from the woodpile. The screw holes cleaned up rather nicely. Now are any of the chunks that came off big enough for a small bowl or plate?
They'll probably bcome earrings, but not made by me.
Right, that's the lid and the base repurposed, now you just need to work out what to do with the sides.
Firewood to heat the water for the teapot 😊
There could be earrings......

@@RichardRaffanwoodturning That would be interesting to see... ;-)
A pendant.
Nice turnout for a fifty year old piece!
i had to build a second fireplace because i turn out so much firewood.
That box could have been stuffed in the firewood bag and the video with it. Characteristically we get, one bowl one pot stand and three videos. That's how you snatch productivity from the jaws of mischance.
Safety squinting from the states when the broken walls were coming off
huh, it would have been quite ironic to make the old lid into a bowl and old bowl into a lid
