Good info. Love how you go over the origins of B-12 - they are microbial and animals don't make it, but due to modern sanitation: if we aren't eating animals who are eating these microbes then we should be supplementing. Very concise explanation....the best I have heard!🌱🍃🕊

When I was eating the SAD diet (but more healthy than most) I wasn't well. I was weak and getting weaker and had been dealing with pretty bad IBS for more than ten years. I started supplementing with B12 as I heard some people are deficient. My doctor did say my levels were high so I stopped (I wasn't feeling better anyway). Fast forward, I' ve been vegan for a little bit over a month now and I'm eating legumes and all sorts of vegetation (no wheat though) with no lBS symptoms and I've been noticing my strength coming back. One way I noticed, is that I don't feel the need for sports supplements before my morning workout. I'm going to keep being vegan and see how much improvement I experience as I've also started to lose fat. Now your video has given me a good guideline on how to supplement with B12 and what questions to ask and what tests to ask for. Thank you so much!

CZcams Vitamin B12 - Why & how much?
    By doctor klaper
0:42 its absolutely essential nutrient , you need it keep your brain functioning your spinal cord working do not run out
2:34 supplement store buy cyanocobalamin b12
2500 micrograms 2:46 once week is enough to keep your tissue stores topped up that's all you need
If taking daily then 250 micrograms should be more than enough 3:19 if don't want cyanocobalamin you take methylcobalmine same amount
3:48 make sure your b12 level over at least 600micrograms /ml normal range down 200 that's way to low 4:05 if you got enough b12 then the molecules it detoxes homocysteine should be nice low ,methomalinic acid should be low, if those high b12 not getting into tissues either need increase dosage or change form
    Drjockers b12 methylcobalmine
Says.u.s. test 200 picograms is low normal,Japan 500 picograms islow normal, I aim 800-1200 picograms b12 levels patients

Great video! A few more suggestions: Anyone who takes metformin for type 2 diabetes or takes an acid-blocker pill (like omeprazole or propulcid) for GERD should have their Vitamin B12 levels assessed at least annually and should take a B12 supplement. These medications can cause deficiency. Both B12 deficiency and diabetes can lead to nerve damage. Nerve damage from B12 deficiency is often not reversible so supplements are critically important. One more note, the USDA recommends Vitamin B12 for anyone over the age of 50 because absorption decreases as we age.

This video is good. I would like a video that I could show to my GP during the visit. One time I showed a video but it ran too long and he missed a really important part about b12 function testing. With short visits of about ten minutes, a video that covers all the salient points in about 1-2 minutes could work. Consider making a series of really short videos aimed at informing GPs about plant based diet caveats. Thanks.

I was actually getting quite paranoid about the whole issue because there were conflicting sources of information about cyanocobalamin and Methylcobalamin. I checked my serum B12 levels around 6 months ago, and they are well above normal. I will do the Holotranscobalamin test shortly. I take Methylcobalamin. With so much of deliberate misinformation campaigns around plant based diet, one tends to get alarmed.

Thank you for the clear informative video. I'd like to suggest that the term Plant Based be examined again: I feel it is open to various kinds of interpretation. For example a tapioca based pudding could well be based on tapioca but could also contain small amounts of butter and could be topped or garnished with cream. A product or diet based on one type of component need not contain only that component or that type of components. As a vegan for myself I always say Plant Food Only. My diet is not based on plants but containing non plant food as well, instead my diet is composed only of plant foods. As a leading vegan doctor, researcher, speaker and presenter of videos I would request you give a thought to the matter since your views are highly influential.
I have great regard for your efforts and have often shared your videos. Best wishes.

    • @jannacoyote4246
      @jannacoyote4246 Před 3 lety

Not quite. Listen closely to the whole video. He said that if you take a 5000 mcg tablet, your body can only absorb around 2000 mcg (or, maybe just slightly more - up to 2500, maybe -), and will dispose of the rest. So, if you’re taking a 5000 mcg tablet only once every 2 weeks, you’re probably really only getting about half the amount that you need. It would be better to get yourself a pill cutter (most pharmacies should have these in their over the counter aisles), and cut your 5000 mcg tablet in half. Then take half a tablet, once every week, and store the other half in an otherwise empty pill container with lid. Just be sure to take your half tablet, every week, on the same day of the week. This is a method that has been frequently recommended by Dr. Michael Greger, in many of his videos. 😉💜🌱💜😄

It's a difficult issue, vegans do not get enough B12 in their diet, so they are told to take a supplement, but at the same time, there are some convincing studies that show a greater risk of developing lung and other forms of cancer in people that have high levels of B12 in their system do to supplementation, not from B12 rich foods.. Maybe we vegans should try to get our B12 from from fortified foods if we can and only consider supplementation when we are severely deficient.

Could you tell me how much should children take B12? What is good level of B12 for them? Thanks :)

Great video! Absolutely nothing I wish to contend with.
I gotta get my MMA and homocysteine levels checked.
I'm probably fine but I can't help but wonder if I lack the intrinsic factor required to metabolize vitamin b-12

Intrinsic factor is folate? Or folic acid?

We're eating rural home grown vegetables and fruit and drinking water direct from our well.
Do you think we are ingesting enough B12 as a consequence of this?

Thank you! I have a baby girl 1 1/2 year old that I’m trying to transition to plant-based lifestyle. How much B12 should I give her in supplement?

Why are you attempting to transition her from a diet that's appropriate for a baby?

Hi Christine, for toddlers the recommended intake is 0.9 microg. So a daily supplement of 10 to 40 mcg OR a bi-weekly supplement of 375 mcg OR food fortified with at least 0.3 mcg three times a day should do the trick =) (source: Becoming Vegan, by B. Davis and V. Melinda)

Elisheba X thanks for the info! Question though. If 0.9mcg is the RDI (daily), then 10-40mcg per day would be way too high. Shouldn’t her weekly intake be 7mcg, or even alittle higher to be safe. I’m actually rethinking why adults even take extra B12 if the RDI is much lower (5.2mcg for adults).

@@christineherbster609 This is because not all the ingested B12 is
absorbed during digestion. At least half of it goes through our intestines without ending in our blood stream. Hence the higher recommended consumption.
I would also add that a moderate excess of B12 (below 4000 mcg per week) will not be damageable. Our body will store what it can and evacuate / not absorb the rest.
