    Dr. Klaper, I have the upmost respect for you and your work. Thank you for an informative video. I am one of those who have not been able to get my cholesterol below 200. My LDL stays high. A couple of years ago, I had my carotid arteries checked, and they were normal, so I convinced my doctor to give me a chance to clean up my diet and do another blood test in a few months. He told me, I can eat fruits and vegetables until I'm blue in the face, it wouldn't help. He said, I needed to take statins. Anyway, I did manage to get my cholesterol down enough points to stay off statins. But lately, although, I am 61 years old, an avid runner and I have eaten a vegan diet for awhile, my cholesterol remains high. I was really puzzled. So, one day, I sat down and wrote down everything I ate. Turns out, my diet wasn't as great as I thought. I had a lot of added oils in my meals, processed junk, and added sugars. I already knew to stop drinking smoothies, because they raised my triglycerides, so I only eat whole fruits and my last blood work showed normal triglycerides. Now, I am eating a lot of vegetables, whole fruits, oats, potatoes and sweet potatoes with greens and beans. Mainly, I added beans, because I am also anemic. Anyway, I retest in a couple of months and I hope my blood work is much better. But, as long as I continue to eat as clean as am now, whole plant-based with no oils, nuts, seeds, added salt or sugars, and I continue my daily exercise, I should be fine like you mentioned in this video. Peace.

However my absent right femoral pulse is now palpable though weaker than the left, and the circulation to my right foot is greatly improved. And it keeps geeing better. 4JOJO1947 - You need to look up APO-E-Gene. There are several gene numbers.
      If you have the #4 gene, then eating fats can kill you. If you have the #2 gene, then NOT eating fats can kill you.
      You need to get your Doctor to give you the APO-E-Gene test so that you know for sure what #Gene you have so that you know what to eat and not to eat. Without that knowledge, everything is just a guessing game, which can cost us our lives while playing the experiment game.

I also walk, laugh and smile a lot, control stress, and all the other suggested ideas for a healthy person. Yet my cholesterol and triglycerides results remain elevated. I refused statins. My new MD is newly practicing plant-based, nutritional prevention and quite confused over my results. Since I follow the prescription, I'll just keep doing so and ask my doc to stop measuring the cholesterol. I'll share this video with him and ask if we ought to measure the inflammatory markers instead. Thank you again for this video.

I refused, and will continue to refine and improve my plant-based diet on a daily basis - and continue with vigorous exercise. Those Numbers Needed to Treat with statins should be better known by the general public.

    Amazing presentation! I was on a non-statin drug for years because my cholesterol kept hovering between 210 and 230. The women in my family tend to get higher cholesterol after menopause--even those who are not overweight. When I transitioned to a plant-based diet, my cholesterol dropped to 198 and has stayed there. My internist is happy with that--the non-statin I was taking started to affect my muscles the way statins would, so I need to avoid these medications. I still have more weight to lose, so I am hopeful my cholesterol will drop more. Thank you!

    THANK YOU Dr. Klaper!!! I have been really worried for the last five months about a blood test which showed a higher LDL cholesterol number than 3 months before but stable HDL. I started eating whole food plant=based diet about five months before the latest blood test and stopped taking statins. The doc insisted I go back on them and maxed the dose. I bargained with her to give me 3 months before I go back on statins as I could not think of how I could be eating any better. I am no SOS and no nuts and keep seeds (flaxseed and hemp) to a healthy minimum. I feel great eating this way and not tired like I used to feel. My diabetes is now under control.

    This is so helpful. I've been vegan for 4.5 years, and my cholesterol has been 240-265 most of that time. It's finally under 195, but I've fretted about it a lot, because I don't want to take a statin unless I fail to bring it down with diet. I wish I knew what inflammatory markers I could ask to include in blood panels to verify that those aren't elevated.
    (Not sure what brought it down. Possibly eating frozen amla slices instead of powder?)

    Just gotta say this, because I tell it every chance I get. High cholesterol runs in my family, lots of meds going around. I was vegetarian from age 18 but stuck with eggs/dairy. In my 40s my cholesterol levels were getting worryingly high. Coincidentally, around the time of that result, I dropped all animal products & went fully WFPB. Next checkup, my cholesterol had plummeted & no worries since then. (Also back pain, fatigue, etc vanished; dropped 30 lbs. without even trying.) One of the best decisions I've ever made.

    Hi Dr. Klaper- what's your position on consuming nuts,seeds and avocado, all, of course, in very moderate amounts. Although Dr. Esselstyn completely disapproves of eating them if CAD is present, there are many other respected medical folks who believe those foods are necessary, including Drs. Greger, Ornish, Furman, Sinatra, and more.Thanks!

    Thanks Dr. Klaper. Appreciate the details about the inflammatory markers. I've been following this type of diet for 7 years now after being diagnosed with CAD. And have had these tests done with good results all around. In seeking out all the ways to aid in reversal of CAD (removal of plaque) I've heard Dr. William Davis (cardiologist) extoll the virtues of not eating wheat, in addition to removing processed oils and simple carbs, as a key means to remove plaque as measure by the calcium score. It also, in his opinion, removes the small dense LDLs. If you've looked at this issue would like you thoughts. Thanks

    Bravo for a marvelous video! New subscriber here! I am one of those who cannot seem to drive down my Total and LDL numbers, hovering around 149 for LDL. CRP is always good, however, I don’t know what other numbers to monitor for inflammation? Can you tell us by name, which labs to monitored? I follow Dr. Essestyn’s diet (since June 2018) religiously, including cooked greens 6 times per day ( BMI started at 24 - now 19). No processed foods, no oils, and cook at home 95% of meals. I take 10 mg Zetia due to muscle aches from statins, but cardiologist continues to push statins or the expensive injections, which I’ve declined. Zetia seemed to make a six point difference, whereas diet did the heavy lifting to get me in the near normal range. Thank you so much for this new venue for information. Very valuable!

    I like the idea of getting an ultrasound scan on my neck arteries but I'm in the UK and if I went to my GP I doubt I would be able to get such a test done. It seems in the US you have a big battery of tests available for patients. When it was discovered four months ago that my systolic BP was 170-180 all I got was an ECG test.
    Anyway, rather than take the pills suggested by my GP I've been 100% whole food plant based ever since. I just didn't fancy taking pills for the rest of my days.

    While I don't disagree that eating an anti-inflammatory diet is ONE of the keys to success visa vis arterial health, so is smoking, stress reduction, sleep, relationships, etc. I think that one of the big things you completely ignore about statins is that they are ALSO anti-inflammatory, AND they stabilize plaque. Are they warranted for everyone? No. If someone has few risk factors other than high cholesterol and manages to get their numbers down with lifestyle modifications, and has never had a heart attack, stent, or bypass, then sure, statins can be removed once the cholesterol is down and HS-CRP is as well. But for those who've had heart attacks, stents/bypasses, the data clearly show that getting LDL down as low as possible is key to removing risk for secondary events. LDL of 30 or less is needed to reduce that risk factor, and that cannot be done with diet alone. I've never seen anyone with an LDL under 50 even without SOME medication. I appreciate that this video is probably targeted mostly at those who haven't had events yet, but I think your basically blanket statement around statins being something to avoid is dangerous for a large subset of people for whom they (or other cholesterol-lowering medication) could be life-saving/prologing. Your disclaimer at the VERY end of this video about those with genetic FH maybe requiring some consultation with a doctor (never mentioning these people actually DO need to be on medication), is way too little too late and may not caught by many. These disclaimers/exceptions should be mentioned throughout your video so that people know you aren't saying that everyone can just go off their meds as soon as their cholesterol numbers are "around" the targets set for the general population.

    • @MatthewMartinDean
      @MatthewMartinDean Před 5 lety

      @@drjembe I don't know but at the moment I'm highly influenced by Dr. Evan Allen's book Over Saturated-- the main thesis is that if a WFPB has too much coconut, nuts, chocolate, etc. then you can still get high LDL & the CVD that goes with it.
      Vegan Zombie's got a few vids about how he as a vegan, got high lipid numbers and fixed it by getting his fat/oil intake under control.

      @@MatthewMartinDean Thanks for the book recommendation. Wondering if in the book, he talks about olive oil and his take on it? Does it raise LDL or not? And can avocados raise LDL or not? In one exchange I had with a plant-based cardiologist, she indicated studies show PUFA's do not raise LDL.

    • @MatthewMartinDean
      @MatthewMartinDean Před 5 lety

      @@drjembe Dr Evan Allan's book focuses pretty much on saturated fat, so the added saturated fat in Olive Oil vs other things would increase LDL & CVD same as sat fat from any other source. This particular book, as far as I recall, doesn't particularly call out other fats as Esselstyn & Ornish would-- those two doctors are generally anti-all sources of fat, saturated or not. If you come across data that says this or that source of dietary saturated fat doesn't increase LDL, you might want to check for industry funding. Industry funding research tries hard to imply the link to any fat & CVD is unproven.

    Enjoyed the video, and your recommendations seem to work for some. However, after 7 months on a low carb, high fat (healthy fats for the most part), and ample vegetables, I just had a lipid panel yesterday. I lost 25 lbs during the 7 months, and my total cholesterol is now 121, ldl of 79, and triglycerides of 67, all my numbers dropped including hdl down to 29. Maybe it's just genes, but 85 point drop in triglycerides was a relief, and drop of about 25 points total cholesterol. Maybe there is more than one healthy alternative to the standard american diet. The common feature is elimination of processed foods, sugars, and grains.

    Don't carbohydrates damage arteries too? Yes, I think oxidized foods do damage, but can you really remove sugars from this picture? There is really no evidence to distinguish what makes the most damage, and what damage can't be more easily fixed. Overall it's just another association of oxidized foods to atherosclerosis.
