- What can INEOS Team UK do to improve ?
One of the answers may lie in the rig, the powerplant of an AC75.
The double skinned ‘soft’ sails that are used on these boats may look like a compromise between traditional sails and the solid wings of the previous three America’s Cups, but they are proving to be far more potent. Capable of creating asymmetric sections shapes that are believed in some cases to change gear automatically with varying boats speeds, double America’s Cup helmsman and North Sails president Ken Read explains why they are much faster upwind than the wings of the previous Cup boats.
In a one to one chat with PlanetSail’s Matt Sheahan he outlines why these sails work and how they might affect the rest of us in the future, plus he sets out the options that may be open to the British in their quest to achieve more speed in time for the Challengers’ Series, the Prada Cup. - Sport
This is my favorite kind of AC coverage! I absolutely love learning about how all the bits work and the differences between the teams!
Exactly what you need as a spectator. Absolutely brilliant talk on both parts. Hope the UK team get it's act together.
That was a fascinating interview, Ken Reeds perspective was brilliant , keep it up .
And yet I get confused to some people suggesting he shouldn't be commentating on the AC vudeo races.
It was interesting to hear Kenny say that in Ineos' place, he would be freaking out considerably more than they seem to be. I couldn´t help thinking about how often Britain has been in horrible situations: Conquered by the Romans, then the Angles, Saxons etc, then the Danes, then the Normans.... then they stood alone against a European army under the genius leadership of Napoleon, and then again were almost the only European nation standing against Nazi Germany at one point ... so they´re culturally no strangers (unlike the US) to the actuality or the imminent threat of wholesale invasion of their homeland.
I wonder if there are still cultural traces of the resulting capacity for performance under pressure. It hasn´t admittedly ever won them the America´s Cup, so maybe they´re better on defence than offence? The Battle of Britain was certainly a case in point.... and the colonial nations (and to a degree the US) did do a fair chunk of the heavy lifting, offensive-wise, in the World Wars... not to mention the USSR, of course, without whom I can´t imagine the Allies prevailing against the 3rd Reich.
@@Gottenhimfella lol that was weird to read on here.
@@mitchand9 I can't see why tjey would suggest that, he is great as a commentator , the live stream commentary trio are an excellent unit.
This is great Matt. Nerd heaven - even 4 weeks after.
Just to confirm, the Brits are back! After seeing them on course E yesterday, flying in different altitudes was quite impressive. The Americans was there as well but not as quick. I believe the Brits have something up their sleeves, the boat is behaving differently and good on them, they will be competitive.
They never really left. It was their ability to foil in lighter wind conditions that had them stuck dead in the water throughout the regatta.
They could still foil in stronger wind conditions like they did in day 2 of the ACWS.
@Glenn Watson Hi Glenn, I didn't have a speed gun at the time, but it was obvious Ben and Co was fast, our fishing boat 120 horse maximum speed 35 knots, we were following the Brits and they were pulling away from us and we couldn't keep up. The Americans a few minutes later, we followed them for a wee while at 30 knots and comfortable. The wind speed at the time was about 10 to 12 knots upwind.
@Glenn Watson wishfull thinking matey...
Fingers crossed!
@@mitchand9 The last time I saw Ineos race was when they were struggling to get airborne, getting lapped by ETNZ... I don't buy the low wind optimization excuse.
👍 Great interview with Ken Read, he actually had some genuinely interesting and useful info that he shared with us.
Excellent, excellent interview w/ Ken Reid. I really hope that Ineos can raise their game to make it more interesting. Ultimately I want ENZ to win but no one wants a walkover in any race, be it the challenger series or the Cup itself. Can't wait for the racing to start again.
No boat from Canada....so Luna Rossa is my LV pick.. they deserve it if they can do it ;-)
One more comment for the algorithm. Best sailing channel. Thank you for not dumbing it down. Serious sailors want to hear this technical stuff.
Ken Reed one of the best commentators in the America’s Cup by far ...
With the detail he goes into and the interviews and the presence, I'd say he's one of the best in the world! Like Attenborough of the sailing world =)
Best insight to the current AC boats and trials & tribulations I have watched yet. Fantastic!
Excellent and informative interview... Maximum information per minute with excellent questions and straightforward answers. Well done!
Easily the best technical insight I have seen so far!!!
A lot of mutual respect in that interview Matt, great insights, the future is looking bright!
Great job! I definitely enjoy the more knowledgeable discussion and usage of high-performance sailing terminology, (camber, twist, depth, etc) over the mainstream AC coverage.
What a great guest Ken is. This is the kind of information that we love to hear.
He was spot on about ineos can tell sailing is in his blood. First time watching this type of racing I’ve got to say I’m absolutely fascinated and in ore of these boats and sailors 👍🏻👍🏻
We need another one of these in the light of the round-robin results
What a fantastic interview! Thanks for that!!!
What an awesome conversation
The content on this Channel is out of this world!!! Keep it up
Superb update thank you! Awesome to have the insights from such a pro!!
What an amazing interview! What a wonderful coverage of the AC 2021! Thank you so much!
What an interview, world class. WOW.
Great video, nice to hear some quality technical analysis.
Excellent interview and commentary. Thanks very much gents!
Fantastic content! Exactly the kind of AC vids i'm after. Cheers.
Super informative -- not seeing anything this insightful anywhere else. keep it up!
Thanks for the coverage!
probably the best interview on post round 1 racing have seen to date!! well done
Kenny is so full of knowledge... love the “I’m only speculating here because I’m now one of you guys”now... top work Kenny..🥰😎
I can listen to Ken Read all day. Great interview Matt.
Great interview. Looking forward to next set of races...
Great interview Matt, always love listening to Kenny Read.
Great reporting as always. Cheers.
Great work, more please.
Great interview, to be seen!
Great conversation and interview!!
Fantastic interview! Can't wait for sailing to start up again
Yes ! Very intersting and surprisingly clear and simple, thank you.
Excellent interview. Thank you. For the sake of the competition as much as anything, I really hope Ben and team get that boat singing.
great production! what a fine turn if the brits take this home!!! this was a very timely interview.
I learnt so much in this interview and googled heaps the technical terms he used. As a casual who has never sailed I can now watch the races with more enjoyment. Many thanks for this excellent video!
Fantastic interview. Amazing insight
Ken gave great insight. I’m well impressed.
Great interview. thank you.
Fascinating in depth
Really interesting interview- thank you
Great presentation
Thanks for the discussion guys!
Ended up being spot on about Ineos. kudos
This is the best video for ages!
Great insight to something i don't understand but yet a major fan!!.. kudos!!
Excellent vid....many thanks!
Great interview and info I wanted to hear! Cheers!
LOVE the commentary ❤️
Great stuff! Super interview.
Great chat.
Great interview.
@PlanetSail... Great interview, Ken Read is a walking encyclopedia of sailing knowledge.
Excellent!
Thanks Ken !
Great show thank you
Great tech explanation by Ken
Great interview! The double skin could be a game changer in offshore and round the cans racing if they could make it reliable enough
That was indeed fascinating and encouraging if your a Brit on so many levels.
Subscribed! Excellent interview. Thank you.
Great coverage 👍🏻
Very impressed with the quality of the journalism in these videos. Never pretends to be an outright expert and always qualifies to the audience when he is saying something he can't be certain of or is an opinion.
Great interview thanks for the info
A very informative interview, it certainly brought me new insights into the 'sail plan' issues the teams are thinking about. I personally believe that INEOS are in this for the 'long run' and the team's ability to understand and resolve design issues will be central to that plan. I am confident that INEOS are capable of winning the 'mug', but like all other challengers it may (only 'may') necessarily take more than one attempt. Nice reportage.
nice one good to keep up to date
Great interview!
Great video!
Thank you!
Ineos may have been late to the first race but i wouldn't count them out , what they need is time . Their foils seem to be the most unstable but that just means fast . Having said all that many things on the ineos boat make no sense to me however the etnz boat almost everything makes sense and they appear to have more depth yet to be revealed just as the rest catch up , Im going to enjoy seeing how each team has dealt with the down side of a code zero once foiling, that will be an eye opener.
Very good
As a car guy, I think what Ken is saying @ 3:12 is the UK boat is geared too high. They don't have a first or second gear and need the stronger wind to start off in third gear. I think they'll get that sorted out with experience. Great discussion Matthew!
He was also saying that the boats need to be able to change up more quickly and smoothly and radically without losing efficiency (as you inevitably do with, say, a torque convertor). More like a VW 8 speed auto, perhaps.
Very interesting and fantastic interview 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽ETNZ
He was 100% right, look at them now 👍
Best channel for AC info.
Probably, as an ex(?) designer, the most interesting interview I've ever seen. Fascinating
Any idea why they all have bow sprits? No stay sails.
@@robertewalt7789 They are designed to carry a Code Zero of the bowsprit, but it seems they have no use for them in anything but the lightest of winds, if even then.
The rule stipulates a fixed bowsprit and since that is what makes them 75feet, they will probably not change that rule :P Would likely gain some topspeed if they took them of in all but Code Zero weather.
Changing the shape of the main sail is very cool. Did not know they did that. I wonder if next time the try and change the shape of the front sail also.
Looks like Moore's law works with sailboats too. Not the price part.
Fastest boats seem to have full end-plate effect on the mainsails (main foil-wings) all the way to bottom of the leech of the mainsail. They rub along the deck while sheeting in or out. The whole sail-foil moves as a unit side to side. American "boat" adjusts the traveler in gusts to keep the boat going straight with no change in heel. Luna Rossa seems to sail the boat up or down without changing the traveler.
No in & out on the main sheet (causing boom to rise and leech to loosen)...the foil stays consistent in shape. my observation.
Nice one Matt. Can you dig out a foil specialist next? Diggers
Well said that man.
Kenny works hard to NOT mention the “other” sailmaker.
I'm loving the technical side of this AC, and i wish the discussion about it would be much bigger. But as a first time follower of the sport, my God sailings terms are impenetrable. I know enough about engineering, but often i can't follow a video on these boats i would like to know more about, cause I just can't understand what are they referring to
Anyway, thanks for another great video, yours are always up there with the best ones
One way to learn more is to take an intermediate sail racing class or start racing, you will learn many of these ideas, particularly for sail trim and sail shape, which is the main topic of this interview, since North Sails is one of the sail makers.
Thanks. Thats looks more promising for Ineos
03:12 That's pretty good journalism. Finding the only person in the world that thinks this.
Meanwhile, up the the other end of the rig, ETNZ were training with a code zero on Jan 5, so it seems that that debate is not yet concluded czcams.com/video/HetkaH45nwM/video.html Certainly the last race between ETNZ and LR demonstrated a need for more low-wind foiling support. Specially for ITUK.
If only these foiling moth,s were around in the 80,s when I was sailing dinghy,s. Looks like so much fun.
Could you please follow up with some clarification on foils. What designs are working in what conditions e.g. dihedral vs antihedral. Also what can be changed at this point of the competition. Keep up the thoughtful analysis
Great interview - lots more of the same please, Interviews seem to be like hens teeth
I’m fascinated that the Italians designed out running back stays. Maybe the boldest design idea.
A lot will depend on what the weather is when the racing starts, if it is light and INEOS isn't able to rectify there foils and sails sufficiently they are in trouble. AM and Prada seem, at this stage, about even with perhaps a slight edge to Prada. The Kiwi's are, well, they're the easy favorite, but they don't hand you the cup because you're supposed to win. These AC75 boats are frickin fast -- when they're on foil!
Good to hear someone thinks sails make yachts move. I had been a little baffled by all the chatter about foils and hull shapes and the lack of discussion about sails. Or perhaps I did not get the memo that all the sails to be designed have been designed. When I took up land yachting and was at first staggered by their speed, but what really staggered me was the mast sail shape. A class 3 land yacht has a small wing mast and a material sail, and sailing at 4+ times the wind speed is very different to sailing a high performance dinghy. Efficient systems to control the sail plan as you accelerate and race at 60mph are key. A speed time is a huge distance, small mistakes are magnified and follow you around the course. A poor mark rounding can still have an effect at the other end of a downwind leg.
How interesting
I think a lesson can be learned from advanced Hang Glider wings - one Variable Gain rope does 3 or 4 shape changes to the wing with no complicated controllers.
This was the first time I noticed that American Magic is the only team to use a boom. On this set up I am not sure what function it provides?
Very interesting video Mat.
US Air force messed around with something called a 'mission adaptive wing' that was trialled on a F-111 aircraft ...35 yrs ago designed to change the camber over a wide speed range (albeit flying at 500+ kts!)
NASA has worked on adaptive wings also: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adaptive_compliant_wing
and: www.nasa.gov/feature/nasa-to-test-in-flight-folding-spanwise-adaptive-wing-to-enhance-aircraft-efficiency/
Would be cool to see this mail sail design become popular on all boats
