      It's nice to get the promo for these races. And an explanation. These boats apparently have sails, of the traditional type, some kind of flexible cloth-like fabric, and not wings. I wonder what happened, that wings are apparently "out"? I was still trying to stitch together the differences wings made, supposedly pulling or lifting, as opposed to pushing the boat. Sigh. So much energy wasted, trying to get the physics of it .... Back to sails. Just as long as nobody "kneels", I'm tuning in!

    One correction, the main foil stem does not need to be loaded because the wings are at an angle (viewed from the front). More importantly, getting windward/leeward force (lift) from the stem causes heavy induced drag so the boats are designed to minimize lift from the stem of the T foils. They would like to minimize stem lift on the rudder, but of course that is a great challenge. When the rudder stalls the foil wings lose lift, the stern drops and the boat shoots for the sky like a breaching whale.

    In 2017 ETNZ gave everyone a lesson in crew aerodynamics. For the brains trusts in the challengers they all seem to have forgotten. Clearly evident in V2 of the AC75 ETNZ have crew exposure to windage very limited. 2 sometimes 3 heads poking above the gunwale per side. The challengers...well they are head and SHOULDERS above the defender by 4 or 5 crew. The drag difference is massive at 50 kts (90-100kmh range). Possibly they could alter the ergonomics of grinding pedestals but at what sacrifice to power output in a position that the body has trained for the past 2 years?

    • @nathanaeljani4127
      @nathanaeljani4127 Před 3 lety +2

      Its against the rules for the boat to provide aero fairings to protect the crew:
      12.11 When viewed from above and orthogonal to MWP, neither the crew nor the guest racer shall be covered
      at any time by any part of the yacht except the mast, sails and rigging, or occasionally by other components
      provided that only a small part of any crew member is covered, and this covering is not designed to provide
      aerodynamic fairing of the crew. (from the rules published by RNZYS).
      So ETNZ are being a bit cheeky with the boat design. It's clearly designed to mitigate the aerodynamic penalty caused by the crew

But vibrations on the body are not felt, only the wing sounds ... I compared it to the double bass ... The tone is clear and evenly intensifies with increasing speed ... I think it resonates, the lower plane of the wing is from the upper one, under the first pressure is higher than over the top? Yours faithfully ....

    I wonder: is there any rule that says how the arms should be shaped? The sideways forces on it, the spray it creates because of pressure differences near the surface, and the weight of the boat leaning on the bent shape, it seems suboptimal. Why not make the arms more straight, and sail the foils at an angle, like a kitefoil going upwind?

  • @MozzySails
    @MozzySails Před 3 lety

    The point about the foils doesn't hold true (@3:43). Firstly, if there is a difference in angle of attack between the rudder and main foil, the boat turns. This is yaw. Maybe you are referring to the amount of leeway (or in fact how they appear to lift to weather). Pure leeway is the result of foil shape and speed and the angle of attack of the foil. This is created by rotating the foil relative to the centre line of the hull. This would create an impression of the boat 'crabbing'. Like a gybing centreboard. However, this doesn't give a better sailing angle through the water. There may be some secondary benefits to rotating the sail plan relative the apparent wind or aero benefit. But it's not to directly sail a higher or lower course.

      America's cup is often called F1 on the water and that is an apt description. It is about sailing and technology. Pure sailing in equal boats has never been the point of the America's Cup. I think they have made attempts to contain costs and improve the sustainability of the sport but at its core it will always be an expensive high tech sport. These boats bare scant resemblance to previous monohulls. These are part boat part low flying aircraft. It's going to be compelling and spectacular viewing.

    I'm showing my ignorance here. It is many years since I sailed, and that was just dinghies about 50+ years ago, but one thing that strikes me as really different (apart from the foils) is that it looks like when the boats turn through about 180 degrees, the sails don't change their orientation with the boat much - they may go to the opposite side of the boat, but are always close hauled. How does that work? What happens when they run before the wind, or do they never do that? There seems to be virtually no adjustment to their set. Sorry if this is a really naive question.
