I've been enjoying making things with placemats! Easy quick and efficient use of fabrics! This tutorial is showing how I make a laundry/storage bag/bucket out of just 3 placemats, some trim and cord! :) I hope you enjoy! :)

Jean, could you please make a little pouch pocket for a cell phone for use of the elderly population ....I am one of those elderly people who can never find my cell phone and that’s not good in case of an emergency. It would have to attach somehow on the body and could be worn all day. Keep your tutorials coming I have learned so much from all your knowledge and. DONT change anything about you and your tutorials....I LOVE ❤️ listening to you ❤️❤️ JOANNE from Massachusetts

OK, another idea: I went back to try to see the spindle pin cushion somebody mentioned (I couldn’t find it) but a new idea popped into my head while I was watching you put the bottom on the bag! If you use four placemats instead of three, and don’t cut the ones for the bottom in half. When you overlap the seams you could overlap it by six or 8 inches (or whatever is half the size of the placemat) and have a row of pockets either on the outside of the bag or the inside of the bag,. OR, outside pockets on one half of the bag and inside pockets on the other half of the bag! Sew vertical rows of stitching to divide the pockets into whatever sizes you want. But otherwise, you would make the bag exactly the same; seam the bottom, box the corners, all exactly the same way. What do you think?

Hi Jean, something I have thought about making (because I don't want a big project) is a sewing machine mat. You could even use placemats. Sew a flat quilted bottom that hangs over the front of your sewing machine table with pockets sewn along the front for quick access of some of our sewing notions, snips, etc.

Thank you for acknowledging the fires on the West Coast. I live in a suburb of Portland, Oregon. If quarantining seemed bad try going outside where the smoke fills your lungs. Over 10% of Oregonian's have had to evacuate their homes and six towns have been completely destroyed. YOUR RAIN should be here on Monday in Southern Oregon and in Northern Oregon on Tuesday. Thankfully, my husband, our children, and I have not had to evacuate our home so YOU are our connection to the outside world. YOU help remind us that not everyone is going through these troubled times of fire when I think this stuff isn't all that important. YOU remind me that sewing IS important as it helps keep our spirits lifted and helps us find joy in life as we think of others through sewing. I've not been getting your notifications, but have needed to look for you from time to time then go back and view any of your videos that I have missed. Most of all, I do miss YOU when you are not on often.

@@pattijacobs1 Even those who are still in their homes have a hard time breathing. Portland has the worst air quality in the WORLD right now and that's not even in the fire zone. Being outside is horrible, but people have to get their animals to safety. Laws have been relaxed to allow animals to cross state lines for refuge since the closest fairground facilities were over loaded. Grocery stores are staying open longer so people can park their rvs, tents, trailers, vehicles, etc in their parking lots and use their restrooms. Sometimes the thoughtfulness of others is overwhelming. I cry tears of despair and gratefulness. This has never before happened in Oregon in the last 119 years. If it had my grandmother and parents would have told me about it. Several fires are linked to arson which is even worse. Please, if you believe there is a God, pray for the West Coast and this nation. In the words of Queen Elizabeth II in reference to 1992, "I shall not look back on this year with undiluted happiness."

Oh I understand. I'm sorry I didn't state this properly. I am very sympathetic to your plight and that's what I meant to convey, that I'm thinking of everyone near or involved in the fires. I'm sorry if I offended you by what I said.

    • @rosemarykriegel3226
      @rosemarykriegel3226 Před 3 lety

@@pattijacobs1 Oh, heck no!!! I'm not offended at all by one single thing you said. I'm so sorry you thought that was even a possiblity. It's hard enough to be under house arrest because of covid. It's just harder when one cannot even go outside on their own property and breathe easily. It's just another opportunity for others and myself to be thankful for what we do have and not bitter for what we don't. Joy is still there even though it may be harder to find. In the words of Winston Churchill, "Never, never, never give up!" We must keep looking for joy in our trials and frustrations. Sewing helps us make our own joy when we cannot find it elsewhere.

I am in south east WA state. We have no fires nearby that require our evacuation but our air quality is over 500 and so we are hunkered down in the house with AC and air purifiers going. We can see the houses across the street but nothing beyond that. It’s crazy. Great to have videos like yours to watch this weekend.

The fire didn’t reach us so we were so thankful. Now the smoky skies have been unbelievable. Last week we had one day where it was dark like night all day. The sky was black/red. It was so creepy and quiet. I have never seen anything like it in my life and I’m 68. It looked like the apocalypse. My kids called to make sure I was ok and their job sites were shut down because of the air quality. What a weird year.

Love the bag Jean!! I have some of those placemats. I turned three (two rectangular and one round) into a cover for my instant pot. Now I know what to do with the rest. For those of us who celebrate the holidays, I can see this type of a bag to hold a Christmas gift using holiday place mats, or a Halloween candy bowl with the top turned down. I was going to suggest perhaps a tutorial for a pincushion with an attached thread clippings bag. I guess it could be a tiny version of this tutorial with an attached pincushion of some type. I’ve been meaning to make some mug rugs for me and my big coffee mugs. I’ve seen some really cute quilted ones. Seems like it would be a quick project without too much commitment 😁 I’m feeling the same way about big projects, it’s too hard to concentrate right now. We are in Northern California between the fires to the south and the ones in Oregon to the north. Since the bad fires here two years ago I feel like we hold our breath until fire season ends. It seems like they just finished the DRC work for the brothers and sisters that live where the fires were two years ago, now there will be much more work to do. Critical times hard to deal with for everyone, but looking forward to the paradise to come! Hope they fix the bridge and save you the trouble of raising the house. What a huge undertaking that would be. Love watching whatever you make Jean! Always enjoy spending time with you!

Maybe you could explore using unconventional materials in the sewing room. For instance, using a shiny silver car sunshade to insulate a lunch bag or casserole carrier. I've used Homasote soundboard insulation covered with cotton duck fabric as a lightweight removable ironing surface. There are so many cool things out there if we think outside the box! ❤️❤️❤️

So nice to see you back on form and keeping in touch with us all. I too am at a bit of a sewing block, although my daughter has just joined a new dance school and I may have been commissioned to make their character skirts as part of their uniform. It sounds like you have the same taste in movies as me and my mother-in-law recommended ‘The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society’. Might be worth a watch if you haven’t already seen it. I believe it’s on Amazon Prime which I don’t have so I’ll have to see if it’s on another platform. Thank you for a great tutorial- your placemats in the USA are a lot bigger than the ones here in the UK. You have much better resources over there. Take care and stay safe. Xx

This turned out really pretty. When you were showing how you box the bottom, I suddenly thought wow that looks just like a grocery bag! So wouldn’t this make a VERY strong grocery bag if we put strapping handles on it? In fact, one way to get some really inexpensive handle strapping is to buy those cheap plastic coated bags they sell at the grocery store, like Wegmans, for $1, and you could take the strapping off and reuse it on your pretty bag. Looks like it would hold a lot of weight! Then you could also use the plastic coated part of the bag to line other stuff.
I also would like using the drawstring version for my knitting projects, especially with being able to roll down the top of the bag! Thanks for sharing!

Hello Jean, So good to see you again! I quite enjoyed your drawstring bucket/laundry bag tutorial and of course listening to your chit chat. Always love to hear from you. I'll have you know I am working on the 5 diamond quilt that you recently did the tutorial on. I am really enjoying making this quilt top.
In response to projects, I have the following recommendations: Garment bag, an apron, perhaps an old fashion apron where they were like a garment on the upper body and closed with snaps down the front. I recall my grandmother wearing them. But any apron would work. How about a sewing machine cover? Perhaps a holiday runner for the table. How about Holiday gift bags? Holiday Placemats? Potholders? Perhaps a Wall Hanging Organizer ... to put stuff in - maybe rotary cutters, scissors, quilt rulers and such. Maybe do a video tutorial for beginners on what would be needed to begin sewing. You also did a heart wall hanging recently. what about a colorful holiday tree wall hanging or pumpkin patch wall hanging. Those are the ideas that come to mind. If they help you great, and if they don't, no problem either. To you and family, be well!

Just a couple suggestions on things to make... coin pouch, wallet, small handbag with a place for the cell phone and Packing Cubes.
So many people are using cloth packing cube to put their clothing in then put them in their dressers. It makes a nice, clean, neat and organized way to keep your clothes. Packing cubes are being use at home and for travel. The good packing cubes can get expensive especially if you plan to use them at home to store all your clothes. Can also use the cubes to store the clothes in the closet or under the bed.
The cheap packing cubes dont last long they tear easily.
So some pretty inexpensive well made packing cubes would be great...
Well hopefully that will help you out a little on things to make. Im new to your channel and I enjoys your video.

I’m sorta new to your channel and haven’t yet seen all your videos but....as a suggestion, how about some sort of walker bag or wheelchair bag gizmo. Another idea I’ve been thinking about is a fiddle lap quilt. I think that’s what they’re called. They’re for dementia patients. Also, and you’ve most likely seen this movie, but I can watch “As Good As It Gets” over and over. It’s so uplifting. Ok, I hope the feedback you get from your channel will help you, as you’ve certainly helped us, over and over, time and time again.

Thank you so much Charlene! You might have missed the video where I explain that as one of Jehovah's Witnesses I (or Jen and our families) do not celebrate the traditional holidays, such as Christmas, Easter, Halloween, etc. We do however celebrate lots of other things ~ people assume we don't ~ but we certainly enjoy weddings, anniversaries, babies, showers, parties, picnics, graduations, etc.! So I won't be doing any tutorials such as you have asked, but I am concentrating my next several videos on small easy gifts for the gift giving season coming up for y'all!! :)
