I'm a stay-at-home mom who has raised 10 kids (yes I gave birth to them all), along with my husband and now have time to create and indulge in my quilting passion! I am creating How-To Videos on Quilting, Applique, Machine quilting, and more! My family is very important to me and I often include our 23-year-old extremely high-functioning Autistic son, Maxwell, as well as my Englishman husband, Ian, and all things family Truelove and daily life happenings! I am all about having fun, finding SOME kind of Joy in each day, remaining positive, and enjoying this creative outlet - Perfection is Very Overrated!! :)
USING UP MY SCRAPS! ORANGE PEEL QUILT PROJECT
Who of us quilters DON'T have tons and tons of scraps!! Let's use them up! This super easy quilt, made by just pulling 5" and 6" scraps, along with a purchased Orange Peel template, will make a big dent in that scrap pile:)
Join me for Truelove Family stories (which I have many, as a mother of 10 kids), Mothering Autism, with our Maxwell on our many fun car rides, and Free quilting class and sewing lessons! And as in a 'classroom' setting, my tutorials are approximately 1/2 hour+ long....So Join me in my home sewing room, out and about and trying to make all sorts of quilted goodies! Be aware ~ I like to chat and probably repeat myself over and over, (and stutter sometimes), and if this annoys you, then view elsewhere - but, if patient, you hopefully will learn a new method or technique and get an insight into a very large family and their crazy fun:)
And as always: Love From The Trueloves;)

Simply beautiful as usual Jean. 😊❤
This is something anyone can make. Your technique to do strips is so time saving…unlike other videos. Liked and subscribed and will check out your other past videos. Found you by mistake😂❤️🇺🇸. Sewing the peel on is a good thing to do to pass a little time…a few at a time…”mindless sewing..”
Greeting who? Off planes?
Our 2024 Convention, held at the Wells Fargo arena in Philadelphia, was hosting delegates from over 20 countries. The were all spending a week in various of Philly hotels and needed help navigating around the City. There were hundreds, no thousands, of volunteers who devoted time and energy in helping these folks ~ from helping off planes, subways, coaches, etc. The transportation department was a smooth running machine with their help:) We made signs, etc., to greet our friends!!
Hi Jean! That's really pretty! I made one a couple years ago and cut around to make it round and then add ed d the binding.
Hey there! Gtrat job reading Maxwell! You're so handsome you look good with or without a beard! I like clean shaven, but what a pain it must be to have to have your face every day!
Another wonderful idea to use scraps and charms! Thank you for being an amazing teacher💕
Beautiful
I make quilts to be loved and enjoyed. I don't make show quilts. I can no longer do the hand work so everything including bindings is by machine. I think you do beautiful quilts. Quilting is to be enjoyed and shared.
I’m in Central Pa, Windsor twp. Too hot? Love the heat, going to hate when fall /winter arrives. I think it’s so funny, everyone complaining about the heat. It’s summer it’s suppose to be hot!
Omg, you been busy! Bless your soul-10 children! WOW
It’s six years later- and I just made a 3” square (1/2 sq triangle-over 500 of them) in all varieties of blues and white. I have that cutter too, but never used it.
Thank you so much. I tried this before and kept getting them wrong!! ( which I noticed when I was quilting it. Grrrr!!). So frustrating, so I copied the pattern you showed for the block. I will try it again.
Glad I could help!
I’ve been looking for a tutorial like this. I want to make this in satin. Thank you so much ❤
Glad it was helpful!
Love your ideas ...food for thought! I may try this. Never made a quilt but it looks easy when you show it❤. Thanks
You can do it!
Love this! Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Made one for a gift for 100 year old friend. This pattern is lovely and very different from the usual fold star. Fancy!
Sounds great!
Just found you ,and am I ever glad !!! Love your quilt and hand embroidery and your colors, love to do these things too , I have been in a slump mostly because of my health ,cancer treatments and other things,to watch you and see your work encourages me to try to get back at my hand work and my machine thankyou and May God bless you and yours richly! Sandra from Michigan.
Aw thanks so much for 'finding me' Sandra:) I appreciate you taking the time to watch in light of your challenges!! HUGS!!!
Thank you for this lovely tutorial. I find that I must try to make one for myself. You have made this so clear that I'm sure I can. Once again thank you.
You can do it!
Absolutely beautiful colors .and pattern..these would make gorgeous appliance covers ..toaster.etc..if made to fit ..thank you for making it where I can understand the patterns
Thanks so much 😊
Love scrappy
Good morning Jean, I am finally catching up on your videos Jean. It is lovely to have the time again sit and watch your videos. I have had surgery done on my veins (leg) and recovering slowly. Maxwell did a great job on Sharing is Caring, he should do more Jean, Hi Maxwell 👋. Making an Orange Peel quilt is a great idea. A couple of years ago I made a project bag for my knitting using Orange Peel blocks and I still have enough scraps to make a lap quilt. Thank you Jean for bringing the idea of an Orange Peel quilt and I love the blanket stitch you used for the applique. Unfortunately my machine does not blanket stitch, it has many others features except blanket 😢. Thank you Jean for sharing and look forward to see a finished O Peel quilt quilted by a master teacher. Blessings as always to you and all the Trueloves. Thelma ❤❤
Oh I'm so sorry Thelma! Your poor legs! Hopefully you are putting them up whenever possible. We have been beyond busy (hence the lateness in answering you lovely comment) I will be getting back to my sewing room soon:)
Love this! I think it has to go on my TO DO list...❤
Beautiful quilt!
This is one of my favourite designs. So pretty
Love ❤
Great idea for scraps!!
Thanks Brenda:)
Great idea. I love your creativity. I’ve thought of doing something similar to make smaller flower petals but use my cricut to cut the petals.
Great idea:)
What a great idea Jean. this is one that I will definitely have a go at.
Super:)
Jean I love your ideas I have learned alot from you thank you so much .keep going on with your great ideas.
Thank you:)
What a great way to use up scraps. I’m all for the scrappy look. Thank you, Jean. Enjoy your convention. .
Bless you all for learning. ❤😊
So true Jean, you don't have to be certified to save a life. It helps, but not necessary. I got my first certification at 12 in school. I babysat a lot. I've been recertified several times. My daughter has been certified since she was 16. She worked in a summer camp. We've both had to use our training, with no skin barriers. As I posted, my daughter used her training ladt week. The most important step is assessing the situation, taking control... don't just yell to call for help, you point at a person and say "You, call 911", "You, get the AED", "Who can help". Sometimes, you do the actual CPR or choking alone. That's okay if help is coming. Adrenaline will keep you going. But, it's exhausting.
Sent you an email lol
Thanks for this tutorial!! My family will love these to use in their travel bags!!
Great idea:)
Beautiful quilt but my scraps are small small and smaller lol the weather here is good we have a little obstacle till you that in the email i will send you picture of what i am working on have a great week looking forward in hearing from you
Thanks Beverley! I've been super busy, but I will get back to you!!!!
Jean, I was wondering as I was watching how it might look to appliqué a circle in the center where the where the orange peels come together making them appear to be a flower. 🌸
I thought that and then said 'nah'....can't be bothered appliquing a million little circles!! LOL! LOL!
Great idea! Love it! Wonderful way to use up scraps!😊
Thanks:)
There are many charities that take quilts. My Church makes quilts to our local shelter, and to our sister Church in Africa. Project Linus and your local hospitals need baby quilts for the preemies. I have my daughter's quilt that someone made. It made us feel like we weren't alone in our journey. I was told I would never have children. Went through the "change" at 26 years old! I thought there was no hope for a child. One day I woke with a horrible pain, went to the doctor. I had to take a pregnancy test to get a shot for something. Imagine my surprise when the doctor said "I'm so sorry, but your pregnant". I was really pregnant. I lost 5 babies in that one pregnancy, but we were able to keep 1. They knew I wouldn't carry to term. I was sewn shut, had a bunch of steroid shots, and went into labor 3 times. They were able to stop it. My daughter was born 2 months premature. She was 3 1/2 pounds, and 17 " long. She was so healthy, after 2 weeks in the NICU, we were able to bring her home. She wasn't 4 pounds yet. All we had was a crib that fell into our lives (another story), 1 package of diapers that didn't fit, and 1 package of diapers. That's all the doctor told us to get, just in case. The hospital sent home a bunch of tiny tubes with tiny nipples, formula, and a case of frozen breast milk from the mommies in the NICU. They noticed I wasn't nursing. Nothing happened there. They wanted to get her a gift. What a wonderful gift! My daughter took 45 ccs of formula every 3 hours, without fail, but for only 15 minutes. The cups on cold medicine are 60ccs, if that brings things into perspective. My daughter took 45 ccs! She's now grown, college educated, paid by many awards and academic scholarships. She has her Master's of Fine Arts, and has had a novel published. She graduated Magna Cum Laude. She will be getting her doctorate in history at some point. I'm so proud of her. She's one of those people with an 800 year old soul. Any volunteer project at church, she would sign us up. I can't believe that tiny baby, has grown into a beautiful young lady. And she's part of a sword fighting group! They're historically accurate weapons, with different armor, shields, or no armor. All 5' of my daughter spars with each person at renaissance faires. She's a crowd favorite! I'm incredibly proud of her. 😊❤ Somehow, that quilt brought back memories of my daughter. That's how her mind works. Nothing matching, no organization, yet whatever she's working on falls into place. ❤😊
Lovely and inspiring story! Thank you for sharing!!🙏🏻❤️
What a wonderful positive story you get to tell:) Bless you and your daughter:)
What a beautiful and simple idea, thank you! Hope you’ve had a wonderful convention! Deb x 🤗
Thanks so much:) We have had a busy week ~ looking forward to the convention:)
Dear Jean, what a great way to use up fabric scraps, (we all have them). It is coming together nicely. When I first saw the quilt I thought “oh no, curved seams” but thankfully not! I’m looking forward to seeing the the finished quilt. I hope you have a great week meeting new people for your convention. Love to the Trueloves 🏴
Oh you must know me by now...if it CAN be made easier, I'm all for it:) We have had a super busy week(s) leading up to our convention. The theme this year is: Declare the Good News!! The world is so FULL of bad news...it's going to be refreshing!! :) Bless you:)
Thank you for this! I love it ! I’m not intimidated by trying this 😊
You are most welcome:)
Thank you for your tutorial! What an incentive to use up those left-over 5” and 6” squares!
It's a real motivator!! :)
Thank you Jean. I have wanted to make an orange peal quilt. I love the variety of fabrics you are using, they make an interesting palette of color. Please share as you progress. Thank you.
Thanks Evelyn!! Will do:) We have been so very busy this week though:)
I love this idea! I have plenty of scraps to use up!
Super!! But I guarantee....your scrap bag will not go down one inch!!! LOL! LOL! I swear they multiply in the night!
What a great way to use all of those scraps and I even know you will still have plenty more scraps for more projects, Thanks, Jean, for another great quilt.
Thanks Terrie:)
Will the raw blanket stitched edges fray? Love this for scraps!!❤❤❤❤
Not really, they are pretty much encased within the stitches. And if a few bits fray, who cares?!?! LOL! LOL! Not me certainly!! LOL!
Love the orange peel blocks! My mind goes to making a memory quilt using men’s cotton shirts-plaids and stripes-for the peels. I look forward to seeing how you will quilt yours when it’s time for that!
Aw that sounds so sweet! Would yield such a loved and lived in looking quilt:)
Do you know you can use used dryer sheets instead of interfacing? I iron my used dryer sheets then sew the star for my Christmas tree, slit the dryer sheet and flip it just like interfacing. No raw edge!
I HAVE seen that!! Must remember that for future!! Thanks so much:)
Lovely! I’ve just finished a king size orange peel quilt… just need to quilt it and add the binding. It’s a big one! 😃🌷
Super!! Great minds think alike!!! LOL!
Lovely blocks....I know the quilt will be beautiful. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks so much Melinda:)
