Just a dislike for the affirmation "the Spaniards wake up late". Where did you fall from? A rainbow? STOP SPREADING FALSE INFORMATION ABOUT SPAIN.
      For your information:
      Italy 1.669 hours per year, Portugal 1.649 h/y, SPAIN 1.641 h/y,
      AVERAGE IN EUROPE = 1.566 h/y
      France 1.490 h/y, Germany 1.349 h/y.
A regular worker in Spain get up around 07:00 and end their turns around 18:00.
Another fact you obviously miss is that we are in the South of Europe: today July/05 the sun dawn at 6:03 and sets at 22:30.
Some bars open their doors before 07:00 to start serving coffees and breakfasts.
The regular shops like food stalls, fashion shops, malls, groceries, etcetera opens at 10:00 and the usual is too find them open until 20:00 or 21:00
      Fine?
      Ok, some more info.
      · IMHO the Guggenheim is work of art itself, but when I want to enjoy art, my first choice is the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum, wich holds a stunning art collection with works from every century and a notable collection of Basque Artists: El Greco, Goya, Van Dyck, Bacon, Sofonisba Anguisola, Sorolla, Doré, Regoyos, Hockney, Zurbarán, Oteiza, Cézanne, Saura, Rembrandt, Zuloaga, Chillida, Robert & Sonia Delaunay, Murillo... Definitively deserves a half day visit and you can buy ticket for both, Guggen and Fine Arts, at a cheaper price. The Museum is now in works for ampliation by Sir Norman Foster (he also did the design of the Metro Stations.
      · BTW, there are works by SEVEN ARCHITECTS WITH PRITZKER PRIZE in Bilbao.
      · Bilbao is tenth in Spain in extension but is FOURTH IN GDP (gross domestic product).
      · Tolkien put Bilbao in The Lord Of The Rings! The name of Bilbo Baggins is taken from a short sword known in that times as "bilboes", because they were made with iron from Bilbao.
      · NEVER! I'll write it again, NEVER COMPARE PINTXOS and TAPAS. Tapas are for free (normally cheap fried food or nuts) while pintxos are small portions of great cuisine. Because...
      · The Basque Country is one of the best areas for foodies in the world.
      · Bizkaia, the province wich Bilbao is the Capital of, has the highest concentration of Michelin starred restaurants in the world just behind Tokyo.
      · Athletik Club has only local players... And never went down from Premier League. Nowadays that football is just business, this is something to be proud of.
PS: we don't have or stop everything for siestas. That's a habit (that not everybody do) in the South half of the peninsula.
Second PS: I'm gonna remove the dislike and I'll gave a like. ;)

Everyone looking at him like he is an alien is... priceless. In Bilbao we are not used to see people walking with cameras speaking to themselves.

I’m visiting Bilbao and Basque Country for a week next year! I’m very excited. I’ve already been to Barcelona/Andalucía and loved it! Thanks for the video! **also I think you meant Castellano instead of Catalan. No worries! 😊

@@GregorBrown Hi Gregor, would appreciate your thoughts on planning for my next Spain trip- I love the scenery, vibe, and weather in south of Spain and Barcelona etc, atmosphere/rustic/mediterranean- I I am craving to go back to that area of Spain and worry I may not enjoy the north of Spain much, is it drastically different and less sunshine? I read you prefer the south of Spain :) - any specific locations you suggest? thanks!

Just to point out that Bilbao was never a "fishing village". It's a relatively new city founded only in 1300 with the purpose to be a mercantile town since day 1. In fact 3/4 of Biscaian cities Lekeitio, Portugalete, Ondarroa....) were developed in the 14th century for that same purpose too.
Not only Biscay had a privileged geographical position for exporting all the goods coming from Castille overseas. Also, starting already in the middle ages, Biscay was known all over Europe for being the best and richest source of iron in the whole continent. Much of Biscay was an open mine and the volume of exportation was enormous.
Anyway, it was only during the 19th century than lower quality, but cheaper, British iron became more widely available, which ended up killing many of Biscay's iron mining operations. Thankfully, a burgeoning industrial activity was also being created in the city and surrounding towns at the same time, thanks to the private initiative of prominent local businessmen, investors and entrepeneurs.
TLDR: Bilbao was never a fishing village. It was established as a mercantile, trading city since its very foundation by don Diego López de Haro in the year 1300.

Personally I extremely enjoyed the architecture and the city vibes overall but I mean hey, during my trip I had a strong feeling that 95% of adult population is just drinking alcohol with tapas right after 4pm. For tourism it might be considered as a fun part, but at that moment I was looking for a place for a long stay with my family, so it was definitely a “no-go” for me
