- Combining both gradient simulation and steering the Elite Rizer is a one-of-a-kind product on the market as of late 2021. This video is my overview of the Rizer which I've had in the Lama Lab for a few months where I cover the ups and downs, ins and outs using both Zwift and Grand Theft Auto Bike.

#IndoorCycling #Cycling #Zwift - Sport
Super interesting that these products are selling out of stock. It really feels like the industry has a big green light for indoor cycling with people being willing to invest in these products.
I also cycled out of bounds today in Zwift after MTB track. I stopped to switch to a road bike and immediately turned into sky in Alp du Zwift direction 🤣
Great no nonsense review as always. I think that E.T mode of flying bikes would be a great badge for the Titans Grove, I’m in.
Have a great Christmas and thanks for the fantastic content in 2021.
Was thinking to use the rizer with the kickr. The video was a good demonstration that this is not such a good idea ✌️. Saved me the money
An elegant solution indeed. Very good review.
That airborne part reminds me of the flying bicycle scene from E.T.!! I think airborne courses should officially become part of Zwift!!
I guess that would require the addition of a human-powered ultralight aircraft (like Daedalus) for the drop shop too 🙂
It reminds me of Mary Poppins.
My first thought was Wizard of Oz!😁
I have bought both Direto XR-T and Rizer and both boxes are now staying packaged in my room, ready to be deployed when a cassette cog delivery from Aliexpress finally comes at last 😀Looking forward to try out my setup. P.S. Never tried indoor cycling before.
The Zipp wheels look great 👌
Love to see how the experience looks like on a rocker plate!
I set it up on my Rocker Plate and it works great!
I wish Wahoo would add a similar gradient compensation setting in their app. You can bodge it using the “wrong” wheelbase, but it doesn’t fix the downhill aspect.
Good work on the air time 😂😂👍
Looks like a really awesome addition for the pain cave if you have €800 to spare!
This will be awesome when zwift makes a BMX track!
Fly Lama! Fly!
Love ET mode
10:00 ET GPL......PHONE HOME !! 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Hoping for a review on the NSW 454’s soon.🤞
They’re on the bike to make the Festive 500 faster! 😆
When will Tacx / Garmin bring one out 😞😢
Thanks for the review. Last summer, I saw you posted where you'd used the Rizer once with the KoM Cycling plate that had fore/aft and right left motion and it looked like so much fun. I only saw you using it that once. Is that as much fun as it looked? Worth it to try? Just too much motion to race on effectively?
In that video, the feet of your Rizer were right at the very edge of your plate. Was that a concern? As a taller guy, my wheelbase might be longer than yours, so that would be something to consider if I go that route.
If you had to choose between either a multi-axis rocker plate (like that KoM or the Saris MP1) OR the Rizer (either because they just don't fit together or due to budget), which way would you go?
Ive been using the Elite Rizer for a couple of weeks now (with Tacx NEO OG, non pivoting axle, fixed that with slim nylon washers). Biggest issue is Zwift is not really supporting this combo as GPLama has tested with the Wahoo Kickr. Was thinking of creating a 'fake trainer' signal by reading the Zwift log file and reading the gradient, then sending that out as a fake trainer (either an ESP32 or RASPI). Would need some coding assistance for that though
Keep us posted.
I’ve got the neo one I’d love it to be able to work with it, the incline would work but not sure about the decline.
Hi GPLama, thanks for this review. Would you by this Rizer with a Wahoo Kickr or Kickr Core? I think about to buy this Rizer, but dont know if it works fine with Wahoo trainer. I saw some laggy in Zwift..Do you know how its works with Fulgaz in combination with the wahoo trainer? Thnx!
Thanks for the review. I have the 2017 Kicker. Is there a hack to enable the rotation needed for the back of the bike? I have a skewer setup with rim brakes. Thanks.
It might be operator error but whilst the Suito is listed as compatible I can’t see how the bike can pivot upwards or downwards for that matter. Mine lifts the legs off the floor if you raise the bike…….but I may be missing something.
I really like the look of this, super smart engineering and it looks quite cool also.
However, I just don't think I'll come around to the whole "steering in zwift" thing.
I feel the same, but the thing that would sell it for me would be being able to change routes by steering through an intersection. Having to fumble around for the companion app to change course is always a pain. On the flip side though, having to steer through *every* corner on a route would also be a pain. As GP Lama said I think this is something you would miss after you got used to it. Until then, I'm not missing what I don't have.
Ohh, and $1000+ for a gadget is not inspiring me to splash out anytime soon :)
Does it help when you lean forward out of the saddle? I find climbing awkward when the bike stays flat.
Can Zwift add a bicycle with a ET in a basket on the front for those airborne routes?
@GPlama pls could you do one on the elite suito?? I can’t decide between that one and the jetblack volt
I've Direto XT-R and the steer works some minutes than it doesn't work anymore on Zwift...use a MacBook Pro with latest version...somebody had the same issue?
Llama Kit 👀
Hello,
I have an Elite Justo interactive trainer which seems pairs perfetcly with the Elite rizer. I am thinking to buy it and already had lots of research about it but I didn’t find enough feedback from the actual users. The only reason to buy a rizer for me is doing longer indoor rides (2+ hours) and I am wondering if it helps on longer indoor rides. It has some lateral flexing ability and also hoping it makes standing up easier on climbs. It is very hard to stand up when the bike is in a flat position for me so I prefer always sitting during the indoor rides and this is causing saddle and muscle soreness after a while. The current price for the Elite Rizer is 700 euros in my country and it is totally affordable to me for now. What do you think about buying one?
Thanks
Let’s hope Zwift finally put some effort into the MTB experience. It’s been shocking to date
Tbh zwift should make free world flying a feature, I'd buy a steering unit to fly around.
I almost hit an eagle.
I have the original Direto... it's not in support list.
I wonder when I should purchase a new smart trainer xD
Thanks for the review. Was considering the Wahoo climb. Have you done a review on Wahoo SYSTM? And compare it to zwift ? I started off with Wahoo Sufferfest/SYSTM this year. And have not tried zwift. Only have so much time and money.
Also on a different subject: have you had a chance to review CAMPY EPS4?
Thanks
SYSTM is simply a reskin of The Sufferfest with a few additions. Not directly comparable to Zwift in the same way Peloton isn't directly comparable.
Campy isn't on my radar either sorry. Their marketshare is just too small to consider sourcing anything for content on. Their gravel group was about as close as they've come.
is the Rizer also fit the magene T300?
Looks like my TT/Tri bike aero extensions would hit the top of the unit on the steep descents. What do you think?
BTW, you activated the ET mode in Zwift, all that was missing was the moon in the background.
I haven't tried this with any TT bar setup. That'd be a good use-case for the gradient limit settings in the profile setup.
Depending, my tt extensions are 7cm higher then the base bar. No problems even with -10%
Hi Shane. Quick question - I have a Rizer / Wahoo Kickr setup currently. As you note, the response of the Rizer is quite laggy, and sometimes non-existent. It also occasionally just gets stuck at a certain incline and then takes a couple of minutes before it returns to level. I’m assuming the experience would be a lot better with an Elite trainer, but wondered if you could confirm before I pull the trigger on a Justo? Sorry, one other question - is there a material difference between the ride feel of the Justo and the Wahoo Kickr? I note the flywheel has increased in weight from the Directo, but its still quite a bit lighter than the Kickr or the virtual flywheel weight of the Neo. Many thanks in advance!
The Rizer works a lot better with Elite trainers as it takes the exact gradient sent to the trainer. When paired with another non Elite trainer it'll guess the gradient from power/flywheel speed (iirc). If you can try before you buy, I'd recommended doing so.
@@gplama Thanks Shane. Unlikely to be able to test the Justo before buying unfortunately. Do I read into that comment that Kickr and Neo remain the gold standard for ride feel, with Elite still a little behind?
I am saving up for one of these. It looks like a terrific product. One question, can you use the steering to change direction or do you still need to use a keyboard or app for that?
In Zwift the intersection direction choice still requires other input.
@@gplama I guess that has it's advantages when you're totally heads down and going for a PR, you don't have to worry about veering off course (or doing an E.T.)
Cable under at the back ;) (OCD kicking in...)
The machined look is pretty cool, would like to see Elite make a matching trainer....
I'd be interested to see the clearance on maximum downhill with Tri-bars....
I have Elite Direto XRT and Rizer which is compatible with this trainer. But after full tightening of rear axis (thru axle), elements of bike frame touched by axis are destroyed by cutting when front of bike going up and down. Aluminium shrims fall down and gather on trainer parts. Frame is destroyed. When I screw with loose, cutting also exist because of friction of parts. What I do wrong?
Best contact Elite Support on this one.
Hi Shane, I just bought the Elite Directo XR and the SRAM XDR 12 Speed adapter. However, I'm experiencing lots of problems fixing my cassette on the adapter. The adapter fits well on the trainer but the space between the cassette and the trainer/adapter is too large thus not allowing me to be able to screw in the end cap for my 142mm Thru-Axle. I tried to replicate the steps on your TACX Neo and the SRAM XDR adapter-video but it's not working. I haven't been able to find helpful videos on CZcams, could you help me out please? or perhaps you could make such video using the Elite Directo XR, if possible? Thank you.
That’s one for Elite Support.
Hi Shane, I bought a Rizer + Justo set last August. Interesting in the passes, but I have a squeak at each sudden break in the slope. Elite support asked me to grease an area, but that doesn't change anything. Have you noticed this problem?
Not happening here.
They call that...road to sky 😂
follow up question: this setup or kickr 5 + climb?
Same same for up and down. Only one option if you want steering too.
Ignoring steering, how would you compare it to the Kickr Climb?
Same same for ups and downs. The Rizer has more configuration options.
Hi Shane, could you comment on any changes that have happened in the year you did this review for the Elite RIZER? Has anything changed? Have the smart trainer manufacturers standardized or are they all doing their own thing which will make this RIZER act differently depending on the trainer? Thanks!
No changes. Cooperation between companies in this space is virtually nonexistent.
I got few question right now i got wahoo kick core so am not sure should i go with rizer or climb since in video it mention about some laggy for kickr plus rizer set up
For climb
Pro cheaper
Con cant steer belt broken problem
Rizer seem to be more reliable
Iive in asia so am not sure about wahoo and elite customer support
Kickr Climb if you have the Wahoo Kickr CORE.
@@gplama thank you sir one more question
Since you recommend core plus climb is it mean there is no lag for this combo am i correct?
Hello GP. Do you know if this will work with the Tacx Neo 2T? Theres a shelf on the non driver side and didn't know if the 10% decline would make the chain stay hit that shelf.
No pivoting axle on that trainer.
@@gplama thanks for the reply. I am able to lift the front end of my bike on the Neo with no problems. Not the same thing as pivoting?
I have it set up on my Tacx Neo 2T and it works fine ....no issues.
Is it too much to ask for it to vaguely match the aesthetic of their trainers? Or is this a glimpse of an exciting new design vision for smart trainers?
Thankfully no wood grain with this! 😆
Howdy, is the functionality still the same when doing zwift workouts or is this only useful when free roaming zwift?
Correct. It's really of no use in workout mode.
@@gplama thanks!
The "GIANT" screw looks to be a lead screw, fairly standard fare for lathes and other machinery with linear mechanical feeds
It looks like a giant kebab meat cooker too. :)
Hi I am having trouble getting my directo XRT connected to the Rizer on simulation mode ok on manual!tried everything I’ve seen so need help please
Best contact Elite support.
@@gplama hi I have but no reply’s at all! I’ve now changed Zwift setting to 100% same as elite app and had success! Tbh I see all the reviews about a great product but they do not say how to get the simulation to work clearly 🤷♂️
any chance that you could combine the rizer with tacx neo serioes?
The Neo trainers do not have pivoting rear axles. You could combine them if you want.... eventually it'll do bad things to your rear frame dropouts.
I'm using it with a Tacx NEO OG. Put some slim nylon washers on both ends. They do wear down fast, but doesn't break anything. Am looking to put some bearings on machined off rear axle mounts
Hey Shane as always I hope you are well, tell me has anyone designed a 'shim with a handle' ?! OR something that would fit between the Boa shoe button release and the side of the shoe , I have pulled two Boa closers FROM the side of the shoe, while taking my shoes off. All the glue in the world will not repair them and a shoe repair guy was at a loss as to what to do other than glue. I do not want to say the name of the shoes BUT they are a well known brand and EXPENSIVE shoes. Knowing I already pulled one off, I have been babying the Boa closer and being sure to hold the shoe while I pop the release, this morning it ripped apart anyway. So something to brace the Boa connector to the shoe while you pop the Boa? Sorry often these make sense to me but do not read well, I hope you get what I mean, don't tell anyone my idea and maybe we can make a million dollars designing and selling something! ;)
Please tell me: is ANT+ dongle needed for PC to get it working with GTA 5 gt bike mod or Bluetooth only is enough? Elite Direto XR-T. P.S. My PC has a bluetooth module.
I think ANT+ is a requirement. It wouldn’t start without a USB ANt+ adapter in my PC a while back.
@@gplama, btw, my indoor cycling setup is working fine over BT without ANT+ adapter.
Great product, shame about the price. I upgraded to an XR in May, been happy with it.
Pleaeeee test in on a the drivo 2 if you still have one I can't for the fife of me figure out why it's not on compatible list. Seems to be fine. I think it's a money grab to buy new trainer
Just throwing it out there, but possibly rear mech clearance off the trainer when going up or down depending on gearing. It's usually not supported due to possible damage, and not due to them wanting to sell more product.
Will we see a similar product available for the Tacx?
It'd require a redesign of their fixed rear axles.
May need to consider selling the Tacx trainer for a Elite as the flat riding experience is old@@gplama
Gawd I want this for my Direto XR, can't stomach the price though. Shame cos I've got the Sterzo and while it's brilliant when it works, it's just not reliable.
My Sterzo is the same - works regularly fo a few rides and is totally brilliant- then mysteriously stops working for a ride. Seems to be a pairing issue as it either works immediately or not. I wonder if there is Bluetooth interference from my phone…
@@zedatomic8342 mine'll only connect if I use the zwift companion, won't touch pc Bluetooth or ant+ at all
I have a Drivo II, I am screwed. That makes my no purchase decision easier.
I don't see why it wouldn't work I Aldo have drivo 2. And I swivels just fine. Idk why it's not in compatibility list I email elite and they wrote back "we only recommend with the following models......."
I did comment here asking king Lama to try it if he still has a drivo in his arsenal. I mean it was their flagship
Does it work with tacx neo 2T?
No pivoting axles on the Neo units.
Thanks Shane for clarifying. It’s a shame it’s not supported.
Hopefully the neo 3 will include pivoting axels .
I am using my Rizer with my Tacx Neo 2T with no issues. Works great!
Is it possible to use one the Tacx Neo?
No pivoting axle on that trainer.
I feel like tacx is loosing grip and is running behind, too sad
how were you not cracking up when you were flying!?
I was…. just disappointed. 😆
@@gplama if only strava let us create segments in zwift again, you'd hold that KOM forever 😄
Elite has great products but they need a new product designer. It just does not look as clean as wahoo, I have an Elite trainer so not a wahoo fan boy but they look better
Are you still using it in Sept 2022?
It's still floating around the Lama Lab. I haven't used it a lot with all the other trainers that are coming in for testing/review.
@@gplama Does your reply imply there are other options coming to market soon? The gradient function option seems like it would be "always use it!" if it works well and the fact that you don't always use it makes me wonder. I have a Neo 2T, so that's one strike (though the nylon washer idea is intriguing). The calculated gradient and lag is strike 2 unless there are software fixes on the horizon.
When a spindle gear is called a giant screw 😁
When I call it a giant screw... because it looks like... a giant screw. 🤷🏻♂️
It seems possible to spend a lot of money on a premium indoor riding setup. 😁
ET?
Thats not how a bike is steered
