  • It is exactly 10 years since the leader of Nigeria's militant Islamist group Boko Haram, Mohammed Yusuf, was killed in police custody.
His death sparked a campaign of terror in Nigeria that has left more than 30,000 people dead and displaced more than two million people.
The BBC's Nigeria correspondent Mayeni Jones examines the roots of the militant group, its rise to global infamy and whether it will remain a force in the region in the next decade.

One thing is certain, the Nigerian Army is known to be one of the best in the continent but Boko Haram has lasted this long because the corrupt Generals in the Nigerian Army are the biggest financial beneficiaries of this war and wouldn't want it to end anytime soon.
On several occasions, the troops have closed in on Shekau but will receive an "order from above" to retreat, leaving the fighting soldiers confused and endangered. To make matters worse, if the foot soldiers protest, they will be arrested and tried in the military court headed by Generals and most certainly punished. A case of you die at the war front or in the hands of the military court. What a horrible time to be a Nigerian soldier!

Sometimes I feel like Nigeria should be two countries and not one. Joining two very different people in terms of culture, religion and mentality was a very huge British error. The core northern Nigeria share closer ties to Islamic countries like Niger, Chad, Sudan and Mali, while Southern Nigerians are very western by nature.
While the South is progressing in education, economy, science and tech, the North keeps taking Nigeria back through religious crises: Shiite killings, Boko haram, Fulani herdsmen attacks, etc.
Why so? Because most northern kids are only exposed to Almajiri education - Quranic studies and street begging, and these kids become future extremists and islamic terrorists. So northern Nigeria has a steady supply of future Islamic terrorists.
While the rest of the world is advancing in technology, Nigeria will be spending huge monies in fighting insecurities from poorly educated extremists in Northern Nigeria.

Forcing the north and south of Nigeria to coexist is like forcing France and the UK to be 1 country, yes they are both Europeans, yes they are the same race, but they are not the same. We Africans need to take control of or destiny and that starts with rewriting the narrative that was written for us and part of that is our present-day borders. Boko Haram is result of social living standards of Nigeria NOT religion. It has nothing to do with religion they just se Islam as their ''motive''.
So yes I think it is VERY lazy to give up on something that could work out. Every time Nigerians call for division when things get too hard. Nigeria will NEVER split whether you like it or not even in 4000 years north and south will still be together.

It has nothing to do with being black. If you were educated you would know how much Africa contributes to the world every year to the West because of Africa's resources but you aren't ready for that conversation.
The only information you need to know is it's because Nigeria is still in the aftermath of colonisation it's only been 60 years since independence. Right now Nigeria is a neo-colonial state that will soon shift (just like the rest of Africa) into its true form. So keep on being racist. As we Africans don't really care.
You probably don't know that Nigeria wad the home to the first street lights in the entire world back before prey colonisation.
Too bad the British destroyed not only African kingdoms/civilisations but Asian ones too example India.
Of course there's no point harbouring hate or blame as that doesn't do the situation in Nigeria or any other country that was unfortunate enough to be chosen as Britain's punching bag.

Calling the group boko haram was purely a misnomer and the group itself never called itself that name. Its a derogatory term meant to degrade it as worthless and fighting for nothing. The question is how can you fight an enemy whom you dont even understand his ideology?

One CIA camp, set up and guarded by a small contention of a US Marine Expeditionary Force, could drone Boko Haram into oblivion. Why hasn’t the US Government done it yet? This really bothers me. There’s a river that runs along the southernmost border of Boko Haram’s controlled territory. We could post a US Marine assault ship off the coast of Nigeria, out of harms way. Boko Haram’s location is barely in the F35’s combat range, it would certainly be refueled, possibly from a fuel drone from the assault ship or floating loading dock. This is so simple, why haven’t we to destroyed Boko Haram, yet? I know the killing of the unarmed people in a village, and kidnapping and raping a school full of very young schoolgirls surely justifies it, right?
