- Victoria Uwonkunda makes an emotional journey back to Rwanda, where she grew up.
She was visiting for the first time since she fled the 1994 genocide with her family at the age of 12.
Victoria retraces her journey from the capital Kigali, to the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo.
In April 1994 extremists belonging to the Hutu majority ethnic group in Rwanda killed an estimated 800,000 people, mainly minority Tutsi and some moderate Hutu. It happened in 100 days. The mainly Tutsi forces which took back power following the genocide were also alleged to have killed thousands of Hutu in retaliation- an allegation they deny.
Produced by Victoria Uwonkunda.
Filmed and edited by Anthony Irungu.
Additional filming by Kevin McGregor.
Executive producers: Miriam Quansah, Louise Clarke and Marko Zoric

I am from Cameroon and this Rwanda Genocide carried out by the Hutus against the Tutsis in which about a million people or more were slaughtered in the watchful eyes of the international community is a very terrible thing that happened to mankind. I shed tears each time I watch a documentary on that. I am even more surprised how they managed to reconcile and live together as a country after too much hatred and bloodsheed. May God bless Paul Kagame for transforming Rwanda this much within a short time. Yes Rwanda is a great country. Thanks very much for this documentary.
Thank you sir that's true 💯
Thank you so much brother
Absolutely, right.
Thank you, keep love our lovely President, Paul Kagame.
Your Young Brother from Rwanda.
How smart do I have to be to realize how stupid I am?
You know few things about this country bro
I have heard terrible stories in my life but the story of the Rwanda genocide really breaks my heart and I do shed tears when am watching documentaries about this terrible story. I don't understand the world anymore. How did the world let this happen? Close to a million people being killed in cold blood while the world looks on? I am reading a lot of world politics, trying to understand how the world operates. innocent civilians being killed in Gaza and the world superpower keeps on sending weapons? Please make me understand how the world operates. Congratulations Vic for this documentary.
Well said.👍
There was no Rwanda genocide, it is genocide against the Tusti and this reporter is out there misleading people because if she fled to Congo, she was never targeted.
Yes the world operates in crazy ways to the point even calling that the genocide against Tutsi a Rwanda's genocide is just another way to hide their negligence that led to the tragedy and try to call it a civil war, when actually babies, pregnant women, children, men and grannies were killed brutally because they were just Tutsis not Rwandan
They are now killing Congolese people 🇨🇩. The East part of Congo is the worst genocide committed by Rwandese.
Its not around one millions its over one millions
If genocide victims can forgive perpetrators in Rwanda, then I have no excuse for not forgiving others. Peace and reconciliation are the only sustainable solutions.
Lots of love from Australia 🇦🇺❤️

😢😢 please i want to correct on the point where you said 800 thausands of Tutsis were killed. It's a million and over of Tutsis who were killed in only a hundred days that's the genocide against the Tutsi 1994 .
Maybe she means in her Provence
The formal statistics shows that it's over 800 000 killed not a million
@@anateta5152 no, It's just BCC things!
It's estimated between 500-800k people where killed not a million. That has already being proven to being false. Over a million would suggest over 90% Tutsi deaths which is clearly false.
You mean over 1 million that is serious
I’m from Kenya, lived and worked in rwanda, beautiful country with awesome people..this time of the year is tough, been to the Genocide monument twice each time was worse ❤❤❤May God give you healing as a person and country in Jesus name
I wonder what you're up to now. A Kenyan woman with experience in Rwanda, you are adventurous!
Victoria Uwonkunda's return to Rwanda is more than just a trip; it's a deep, emotional dive into her own past and a nation's painful history. Watching her journey from Kigali to the border with Congo, you can't help but feel the weight of her experiences. She was just a kid, only 12, when she had to flee the genocide that took so many lives in 1994. This documentary, brought to life through her eyes, is incredibly moving. It's not just about the places she visits; it's about the memories, the people, and the stories that have marked her life and the entire country. The team behind this, with Victoria at the helm, has done something really special. They've managed to capture not just the horror of what happened, but also the hope and resilience that's come after. It's a must-watch for anyone who wants to understand the real impact of Rwanda's history on its people and the strength they've shown in moving forward.
She should have told us what her parents were doing too since her family was not targeted. This period should be about the real victims of the genocide against the tutsi and not some return of a hutu to her homeland claiming to suffer from PTSD
A sanitized trip
Forbidding her to mention her ethnicity though it's obvious
And she can't say who killed her parents
I think she missed rwanda
And wanted to just be there@alrutiR-rk2jn

Kigali is such a clean and beautiful city. I visited Rwanda last year.
I'm Zambian,🇿🇲🇿🇲🥺🥺and the story of the Rwandan genocide is very terrible and heartbreaking,May God continue to heal everyone
Peace to the world.
It's genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, not Rwandan genocide. It's important to mention who was targeted. Not all rwandans were targeted, only tutsi. a group of people were targeted that's why it is called genocide.
@@fabricekarekezi9403Yes ! For sure 100% it's better to write real content, not Rwandan genocide 😭 Is Genocide against theTutsi🙏
Point of correction: it's not Rwandan genocide! Because if it was Rwandan genocide that means another nation came to extremely kill us! So it's genocide against Tutsi! Because one tribe killed another tribe! But both Rwandan!
A very nice story and very heart warming
But allow me to correct The Rwanda and the Rwandans story which is
“The genocide against Tutsi“
And the number of killed victims was approximately 1million Tutsi people

Well said
It’s been 30 years since the 1994 Rwandan genocide and on this occasion Kagame invited his friends (Bill Clinton, Isaac Herzog) to commemorate the victims of a genocide that he himself planned/instigated.
We see this as another case of “criminals returning to the scene of the crime”.
The official narrative of the genocide is full of lies, misinformation and deceptions. This narrative perpetuate the lie of Kagame being the “hero” and his RPF the “army of salvation”, when in reality he’s the true villain who’s been holding the Rwandan people hostage for 30 years.
We know that RPF instigated/planned the genocide. There’s indeed a “colonial” origin to the Rwandan genocide, but there’s also a RPF origin to this tragic incident which victimized not only the “Tutsis”, but also Hutus, Batwas and countless innocent people in the entire Great Lakes region.
To better understand the role the current Rwandan-leadership played in the genocide and their complicity in the ongoing genocide of the Congolese people, we recommend a book called “In Praise of Blood; The crimes of the Rwandan Patriotic Front” by Judi Rever.
The Rwanda we’re familiar with today is but a smokescreen, just because the streets are “clean” it doesn’t mean that Kagame’s hands aren’t dirty and saturated with the blood of African people.
We can better honor the victims of the genocide by searching for truth beyond the official narrative of the genocide.
We can also better vindicate the victims of the 1994 genocide by advocating against the ongoing genocide of the Congolese/Palestinian people and most importantly by opposing the dictatorship of Paul Kagame.
1million Tutsi’s 😅 where do you pull these numbers from there were no more than 8 million people in Rwanda at that time and the Tutsi people only were 11-15% of the population. Which means there were at that time only a total of 880.000-1.200.000 Tutsi’s. If you claim that over a million Tutsi’s have died then according to your number of 1 million every Tutsi has died. If so how come there are still Tutsi’s like the president himself and the members of his cabinet till this day. The math is not mathing my guy. Or do you claim that the percentage of the Tutsi people at the time was higher than 15%? If so why isn’t there a research or statistical data showing this.
It’s the “Genocide against the Tutsi’s” though, not “Rwanda’s Genocide.”
The first time i heard this name and voice on BBC....i immediately fell in love with the voice...then i started searching for the name through google. It was difficult to spell her second name but google search figured it out. At first i thought she is from Uganda but then....i discovered she is Rwandan. That inspires me to dig further. This documentary finally gave me all answers i was looking for.Courage Victoria Uwonkunda❤❤❤❤
I think it is important to note that:
1.) There were practice killings taking place way before the president's plane was shot down in places like Bugesera as early as the Spring of 1993 and many witnesses say French soldiers were overseeing these barricades where Interahamwe would pull people with Tutsi ID cards from cars and kill them.
2.) The Refugee camps in the Congo were not filled with Tutsi Survivors but with the Hutu population and the fleeing perpetrators as the RPF won the civil war they were fighting while the genocide was taking place and took over the different regions of Rwanda. The camps were used as an attempt to try and regroup and re-arm the perpetrators to go back in and fight the RPF. This formation of a refugee camp was all pushed by France in the UN under the guise of a humanitarian mission.
Your story is same as mine, i went there in feb 2024, since 1994,i was 13 years
I'm a Kenyan 🇰🇪🇰🇪🇰🇪🇰🇪 its painful story for the great people of Rwanda and the world. For those who lost their loved and property Sorry and heal
What happened in Rwanda is beyond horror. I have researched about it for over 10 years now, and it still makes no sense how people would slaughter their neighbours like that, let alone, on nationwide scale.
How do people even continue to live and walk on bloodsoaked land?!... I'm not superstitious, but Rwanda is one place I'll never go.
People have died on a lot of land all over the world. Where do you live?
You are another Rwandan hater. but even if the land saw bloodshed it also whitenessed the undeniable heroism of the people who ended the Genocide and saved many people
Wait so they must not walk on the land , they should fly? “ Still makes no sense I have searched for 10 years” lol, 2 sentences that don’t go or make sense.
so you would never go anywhere then ?
You did Internet searches for 10 years now doubt. Do more research on the entire world and there will only be a few spots you can go
Let’s not hurry to criticize the Rwandan Goverment in handling the reconciliation processes. It may not be perfect, but enormous effort has been made through a painful history. I upload Rwandese , the sheer strength to confront this and will to move forward is incredible. 🙏
What a contrast that SA🇿🇦✊🏽 was busy with preparations of celebrating New government of National Unity in April 1994.The exact period Rwanda was all over news experiencing such tragedy.May such inhumanity never be allowed to ever happen to every nation in Africa and the world. How the world turned a blind eye to this tragic atrocities is beyond comprehension.Only time and individual faith can heal such pain.God bless Africa🙏🏽.
I have been reflecting about the contrasting realities of South Africa and Rwanda 30 years ago. I have read about the reconciliation processes of both countries and wonder how much healing has been realised.
I have alvways wondered how south africa reacted to the Rwandan genocide
It was the Hutus' fault, not the rest of the world for not intervening.
May such inhumanity never be allowed to happen again?? It's happening nextdoor in a neighboring country, only the outrage is selective.

As a Rwandan, the genocide that occurred in 1994 against the Tutsi was a deeply tragic and sorrowful event. I appreciate your sharing of your journey returning to Rwanda. However, the information presented in the video regarding the number of people killed is not entirely accurate. The number of Tutsi killed in 1994 exceeds 1 million. Even today, the remains of Tutsi victims are still being discovered in various locations across our country, Rwanda.
Am from Ethiopia 🇪🇹 and am always watch Ruwanda genocide for some reason... and cry and it feels like am there
And I thank Ethiopia for sending peace keepers including abiy to help Rwanda
Rwanda 🇷🇼 is good example for the rest of African countries
The way they recover soon what happened short period of time
Why the other African countries to come to gather and learn what Rwanda people and their government done
Yes it's.
I remembered these gruesome stories when I was very young. I still memorize the throbbing of my heart when I read the news at that faraway time.
Genocide Against Tutsi not Rwandan Genocide how many times do we have to repeat this thing
It’s because Hutus that were protecting Tutsis were also murdered by Hutu extremists?
@@thehoneydeev This is not the reason, Genocide is a process and in its initial stages of preparations, it was not planned to eliminate Hutus. so please stop confusing people.
@thehoneydeev read well the definition of genocide. When we talk of holocaust, we talk of the Jewish people who were killed because of who they are, not because of what they did or their political affiliation. Neither does it mean that there was no other nationalities like Germans, Polish, Italians, Russians, etc who died. Rwandans too don't deny that some hutus also died and there's a day to remember all those who died either because of their political ideologies or because they were saving Tutsis. However, the prime targets in the genocide were Tutsis and this is well documented by rights organizations and the ICTR. So my friend, Rwandans know better and they are custodians of their affairs.
Aliens with their misguided conceptions will not alter the course taken 30 years now.
One day they will add the massacre of hutus as it was at beginning
Where do u place prime minister agata rugamba and many more
We're they tutsi?
@Turkana-omo-marsabit no they weren't Tutsi, but when you want to include Hutu, you want to picture RPF killed, but the Hutus like Hon. Agata were killed by FAR and Interahamwe
Actually they were killed because they didn't want the government to Kill Tutsi that was not the main target
We remember the Hutus who were killed in Genocide and Agata as our Heros
Same as the Students of Nyange they were killed because they didn't want to split themselves they are not included in memoration of Genocide against Tutsi but we remember them as Heros
Boy don't mess with me I have facts and information I know history and you know History
It's just you want to deny which fulfill the 10th and Last Stage of Genocide 🤣🤣🤣
I am Ethiopian, you see, our ld car has ethnic identification, recently, after reform has been in government , some province in our country start omitting it. It’s not Rwanda’s Genocide its 1994 Genocide Against Tutsi ! Correct that BBC
I trust Belgium is happy now! Those malevolent individuals. They ruined Rwanda and Congo .
It's not about 800, 000 people, it is over 1 million Tutsi's who were slaughtered in 1994 genocide against Tutsi

I remember the war becouse it began on the end of Balkan war in Croatia and Bosnia. What struck me the blood thirst with those people who committed more murders with machetes and left more victims then on our territory in the war with more safisticated weopons whitin a 4year time period!
Recently I've met this lovely lady in a church in Los Angeles who was from Rwanda and lost many family members and I asked her how she feels about those evildoers who killed her family and friends. She said she forgave them, bless her soul Jesus🙏
There are a few points I would like to review about in this video:
1. It is not the Rwandan Genocide, it is the Genocide against the Tutsi
2. 800000, this number is not correct, it is 1 million and over
Exactly , it's the Genocide against the Tutsi, not just 'Rwandan Genocide.' And the death toll is over a million.they should share facts or stay quiet.
After 30 year you still don't call it as it is "The 1994 geocide against the Tutsi"
How i hope that Rwanda people reconcile and support each other the government is against it cz they know that if they come together that will be the beginning of their downfall 😢😢 much love from 🇰🇪

The Rwandan genocide is a classic case of how humanity failed millions. The genocide still pains me. Where were African leaders when this indescribable horror happened? The then-Organisation for African Union (OAU)? Where was the international community? This story is reminder that history is a mirror to help us shape the present and the future. Powerful story.

Not about 800000 people but over one Million Tutsis
It's interesting that so many people are arguing about how many tutsi were killed 800000 or over a million.
Just to be clear, not even ONE person should be killed just because of who they are.
And i would like to add that the total number of tutsis before 6/4/1994 was below 700,000.
It is the Genocide against the Tutsi instead of Rwanda's Genocide.
Peaceful we are
Guys you should brief us more about the Rwanda genocide those who know the story
When did it start, who started it, for what reason? that brief will be enough for me
It's not Rwanda's Genocide it's Genocide against TUTSI in 1994
I'm glad to see that the country has healed. However, that man is a killer. He was smiling and looked smug. He was sitting among his victms gloating. They all look horribly shell shocked, like that narcissistic killer is still ruining their lives. That was creepy to watch. You don't have to forgive everything. That man needs an act of god to fall upon his head. He did his time, ow he's imprisoned that village. Unfortunately, this tragedy hasn't ended, yet.
Though you have every right to think of him as an uncaring person, We don't know what type of emotions he had to battle and is battling as he recalls what happened during the genocide. Faint smiles dont tell the whole story. The indoctrination he had as a young boy must have been terrible.
Maan..!

Nah! I don't trust that guy Evariste. He looks evil and monstrous to me! Why is he smiling? As for Narcisse, may the heavens always guide you, you have a kind heart.
Does smiling mean happiness???
Again BBC never forgets to clarify the subject.
Its the Genocide against Tutsis in Rwanda 1994.
there is no specific number of 1994 genocide against tutsi because bodies are still getting found in country, but so far over 1 million tutsi were killed.
Wonderful Documentary @BBC Africa, you never disappoint. However yesternight I was watching a similar documentary 'Reclaiming History' by DW and they stated that there are NO ETHNIC Groups in Rwanda, and the Hutu, Tutsi, Twa is a narrative created by colonialist. Please research on this I would really love you to confirm if this is true! Conversely, the Rwandan Genocide is a terrible nightmare for Africans and the entire human race collectively; it shows what terrible evils we're capable of once we allow differences to develop amongst us; intentionally or unintentionally!
Wow the bittersweet wish of every Rwandan child who survived the Genocide. I was 6 years old. Its amazing how much children who have experienced war, can be agents and bridges of change. indoctrination is our biggest hinderance. undiluted truth is our only lifeline to heal our land and future generations. What makes one ethnicity; survivors and false claimants of heroic Majesty, while the other ethnicity is denied of truthful mourning and healing?
Can we acknowledge every Rwandan? Can we rise above the propaganda and clouded indoctrinated judgment and give each other respect of being equal humans? 30 years on.... Can we not do better?
Side: im not sure that man admitted to killing without duress. It looked very rehearsed, almost like he needed to repeat it to not face greater consequences.
There was genocide in Tigray, Ethiopia 2 yrs ago and the world ignored it too. Just sad.
