- Skin bleaching, lightening, or spot removal - the pursuit for a 'fairer' complexion has become popular in Africa. With an industry worth over 8 billion USD, this isn't just about colorism. It's also linked to harmful substances like hydroquinone and mercury, posing risks to the health of individuals. In South Africa, we examined its impact.

this is SO TRUE. I am very light skinned myself (German and Scottish decent) and I live in the southeastern USA. I am not supporting skin bleaching at all. but as a dark skinned woman who lives in Africa the treatment I get a a dark skinned woman is honestly sometimes very hurtful and disrespectful. it's only because my mother taught me to love my skin but not everyone can be that strong. especially if you're not rich or that educated. until we can learn to TRULLY APPRECIATE ALL COLOURS . this well never stop.
Absolutely. Sorry you have to go through this, it shouldn't be like that, especially on our continent! Unfortunately the notion of having lighter skin is still so deeply rooted in colonial histories, which perpetuates the notion that lighter skin equates to privilege and beauty; which creates mental and social anguish for you and other darker skin beauties. By creating a space to talk about the pain you experience and also educating us all concerning bleaching and questioning it, is important. It is all our responsibility to change the narrative!
In Africa??? I thought dark skin and black pride was celebrated and appreciated! I heard Vera Sidika mention that on Nairobi Diaries! I was floored and shocked to hear how Africans are becoming delusional like black Americans! It’s scary and sad. 🥺

Genuine question, because I guess you get to see your mom's light skin every day. Did you think white or light skinned people really looked like the models on the packaging of these creams? Isn't the cosmetics industry part of the problem? The first time I ever saw these creams for sale was in Singapore maybe 20 years ago. I am a european 73 year old woman, living in South Africa. I can only say: Ladies look after your natural skin, regardless how light or dark it is. When I compare the texture of any brown skin, being so smooth, plump and soft, to a white skin, your skin wins. Our white skin is as soft like yours, only in children. We age quicker, our skin wrinkles earlier. We women are crazy, brown girls want to have a lighter skin, white girls are tanning like crazy to get darker. If you could see my body today, after all those hours tanning, you would be shocked. I have scales like a lizard, memories of frying in the sun. Accept the colour you are, regardless what the fashion dictates.
Great advice!❤
Exactly. I've never tanned or used makeup, except for some moisturiser since my 40s. I'm white European and I've never looked like a porcelain doll. I don't know any white people who look like that and natural skin is all kinds of colours, but it should be healthy.
its the higher melanin that protects. BUT your first problem is your a European in Africa. Your skin wasn't created for that much sun exposure. white skin ages very well when not exposed to the sun .
Cool but we all know it's about visual privilege not age or health.
@@thefelipevaldes age and health are visual. If you look at Malaysia and Indonesia, these creams are for sale to anyone who can afford them, but most people can't. Many Indonesians cover their faces with corn starch to keep the skin lighter. Indonesians will say that the Javanese get the best opportunities. The Javanese aren't European, but they tend to be lighter skinned and taller.
She looks waaaaaayyyyy better with her naturally darker skin.
i agree 100%, people look best with their natural features.
That’s crazy, growing up in Poland I was bullied for my extra pale skin, people said I looked white and sick. So I became addicted to tanning later on. Which was really bad for my skin. Now I’ve learned to accept my complexion, but it’s interesting to see the opposite of that in SA.

Africans must using colonialism as excuse for all of the ills of society. This lady is from a country with an almost entire black demographic. This craze happens far more often in majority black countries than it does in countries in which black people only make up a small percentage of the population. Perhaps we need to look to another root cause.
Most countries that's been colonised has this issue. Asian countries like India and Korea to African countries like Nigeria, RSA and Congo
Don't blame colonisation. If you can't love your own natural skin then the problem is with you or your insecurity.
Just as they tell American blacks they cannot blame everything on racism, Africans can’t blame everything on colonialism. At some point in time you have to take responsibility for your own hearts and minds. This is mainly occurring in majority black countries. It is nowhere near as prolific in countries where black is the minority.
Well, it is the black folk that are upholding this nonsense. White folk aren’t running around berating people for their dark skin - it is black people who are doing that.
I’m white and I have a lot of Indian and African friends and I hear this dark skin discrimination all the time especially in the Indian culture I mean you can’t change your genetics they need to just except people for whom they are.

All skin tones are beautiful. God made everybody beautiful.
North African woman here , it's really shocking and sad , how people don't get an insight on the harm they're causing themselves when they do this ( even though i think that they DO know and choose to ignore it ) , it's so upsetting that people realize it when it's the point of no return...
Also , the twin doctors are so gorgeous on a side note!
And here I am all my life thinking the deep dark colors that mostly only certain African tribes posses was the most beautiful shade in the world. The light is beautiful has always confounded me. I guess I'm a medium brown with a lot of red. Guess a true copper penny. But dark 🟤 brown has always been so gorgeous to me. 🤷🏽♀️. Beyond that attractive is attractive no matter your shade.
And when that Highly melanated Dark Brown glistens in the Sunlight Omgg 😍😌 It shines bby
Glows like God 🤎🖤
When I told Americans that brown, even light brown women like Beyonce in Nigeria want to, and still to this day bleach to white/ high yellow, they didn't believe, bleaching in Africa isn't a dark skinned person thing.
Women here literally want to be white/very lightskinned, even already lighter skinned women like the one in the video.
I can give multiple successful IG bleaching cream pages as context but I don't want people to flood over. I'm talking PALE.
Yes! Every shade and tone should be celebrated and cherished! ❤️
@@EmpressAsheglowing & glistening like pixie dust OK!✨✨✨😃
Me with leathery skin I understand deeply the struggle people of afrodescent who are not pale go through. It's always who is lighter than who when you are all darkskinned. The skin colour hierarchy is serious.
This is crazy. I’m Afro Caribbean. I didn’t know that this infection of a mindset existed in Africa. I didn’t realize that white skin was glorified until I started dating African men.
Don’t even understand how it’s considered a “beauty” craze. It makes people look so strange.
Your natural skin tone is always the most beautiful!
They look like ghosts! Very disturbing i hope these people learn to love themselves
Beauty is beyond the skin.
tbh what makes someone physically more beautiful is their facial bone structure, hygiene and their personality. not the skin color.
*Learn to Love the way God created you!* 😊❤
Brown, black, and mocha skin is so beautiful, it’s such good quality skin too, soft and velvety, has a silky sheen to it when healthy. We have to stop idolizing one color only.
Be happy with your skin. I think dark skin is so beautiful. Too bad these people don't believe it too.
The twin doctors have amazingly beautiful skin tone. I just love black skin, the darker the better, it’s like diamond.
One of the most popular and beautiful models in the world is from Senegal, and has the most beautiful, black skin… In the US, everybody works to be darker. People used to be jealous of my red skin. They would be jealous of my dark tone in how easily I tanned. I believe the problems in South Africa definitely due to the colonization and media control as well.😢 Black skin is beautiful, and the melanin is protection from the damaging rays of the sun.🙏🏾❤
I have a lighter complexion to my kids. I always reinforce a sense of pride in them because many times they get comments about being darker than I am. Dark skin is so beautiful. It' glows so beautifully against the sun. I wish every dark skinned person can understand just how amazing it is to be rich in melanin. I hope they can stop listening to he lies and actually see their natural beauty ❤
